In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Late Thursday evening we had a terrible ice storm here in New England. The end result is we lost power at my home and, while this has happened before for a day or so, this time they're saying the power won't be restored for several more days. I had to put groups of my animals (almost entirely dwarf boa species) together in plastic bins in front of the fireplace and I've gone through cases of duraflame logs trying to keep them warm to no avail. The temps tonight are supposed to be 14 so my wife and I got a hotel room and I had to sneak my animals up into the room lol.
Thing is, at over $100/night, I can't keep doing this so I'm wondering is there anyone close by maybe in MA or NH that could help keep these guys warm. No need to feed or worry about mites or health problems as these animals are super healthy. There are 4 '08 baby Nics, 5 '07 sub adult Nics, and the rest are adult Nicaraguan, Corn Island, and Brazilian Rainbow boas for a total of 16 animals alltogether.
I may end up buying some type of Kerosene heater or something but, with well over 200,000 people in NH still without power, all supplies have virtually disappeared.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. It's been a total nightmare so far. I'm not worried about my wife's and my own welfare. We can stand the cold but the snakes are another story alltogether and I don't want to jeopardize their health. If we leave the hotel we won't have access to the net so we've got to do something fast. Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.

Holy Moly. The only thing that I can suggest is a gas generator. All my guys are heated with electricity, so if our power goes out, all I do is unplug one extention cord and plug it into the generator.

Good luck

I wish I were closer and could help take them, Greg.

do you have, or can you perhaps get ahold of, a bunch of heat packs used for shipping? At least that would give them something to "cuddle up with", and if you even packed them as if you were shipping them, or even just wrap the tubs in blankets with the heat packs inside, it may be just what you need to get you through. I think I have a few here, if it would help you any, I'd be more than happy to ship em off next day mail to you.....if the mail is getting through, I guess.

Best of luck, let me know if I can help.

The long term heat packs, with the animals packed as if for shipping might get you through fairly comfortably. Best wishes, other than putting wood on the fire(not duralogs, but wood which "should" be cheaper), or trying a fuel heater, I'd think that's the best bet.
Of course a generator would be awesome, just make sure you read all the safety stuff about where and how to use it.

[F]When I had that happen a few years ago. I put most of my animals in Sterlites around the gas stove in the kitchen and used blankets to close the kitchen off to hold in some heat. A dangerous thing to do, but I was right there the entire time to watch over it. I also used a small kerosene heater next to my boaphiles to keep them warm as I couldn't fit them in the kitchen. It was a long three days.

You could use blankets over some sort of frame around your fireplace to localize the heat. Use real wood, the harder the better as it'll burn longer. Pine burns very hot but for a shorter time. Again, very dangerous and MUST be closely watched to prevent fires.

I want to stress that I would only do this as a last resort.

Greg,
I see you're online. Shoot me a PM. I can't help you with animal housing, but I've got a 23,000 BTU/hr kerosene heater you could borrow til you get power. Say the word & we'll set up a meeting place.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I went to a Home Depot yesterday and there were two Kerosene burning heaters sitting on a pallet that sold before I could even get one. I was skeptical about putting something like that inside my home because of possible carbon monoxide poisoning. We went to Sam's Club looking for generators but everyone got caught this early in the season with their pants down. They said they had some coming in any day now.
If my work was reptile friendly, I'd keep them there with an oil filled radiator plugged in nearby complete with thermostat.
I think I'm just going to do the heatpack thing with them packed in insulated boxes. I have several 40 hour ones on hand and may be able to get some 24 hr. ones at WalMart. I'm hoping the power is restored soon but it doesn't sound good. With forced hot water heat, even if it does come back on, the pipes have more than likely frozen swith last nights low temperature.
Well, all I can do is hope to get through this short trm for now and get something like a generator set up for the next time around. I'm thinking a very large capacity diesel one hardwired into the main fuse box to keep the essential things in the house going. Either that or I'm moving to FL.
Thanks for all that responded. I appreciate your input.

Great News!!!

Greg,

Thanks for the offer but when we went home we were greeted to the front lights being on which means WE NOW HAVE POWER!!! The electric heaters in the snake room had already warmed up things enough for me to transfer all of my animals back to their respective cages. I was afraid the pipes were going to be frozen but I am lucky enough to have the heat operating on the first floor. The upper zone is indeed frozen but with temps expected in the 50's tomorrow it should taw out enough to get that running again.
I have a great appreciation for what most people take for granted in their everyday lives that's for sure. Thanks again everybody who responded!
