I am not sure you meant this directly to me or not, but I said in a previous post, I could not have made this show a success. I don’t feel I have any type of media credibility or name recognition. But I do feel that Tony advertised a native reptile exhibit, and should have cared about providing what he promised. I was suppose to put on a venomous display at Chad’s table and the GA herp society was going to put on a display (which would probably only been turtles anyway.) But, Chad bailed out, I had already gotten everything together. The GA herp society bailed on Tony, so I wanted to follow thru anyway and he blew me off. I gave him the opportunity to keep his word, but keeping his word and giving what he advertised was not a priority to the man. I was already skeptical about him, as I felt he was not being honest with us about the prior venue. This pushed me over the edge, and put me in agreement with many other people, Tony is not an honest man and has no concern for keeping his word. You can not single handed make it worth while for all of us vendors to come to a show.
Roark is a friend. We talk on the phone from time to time and respect each other. I emailed Tony my opinion right after Roark told me he was not doing his shows. I didn’t know till later Tony had brought in Mohr. I told him there were credibility issues with Mohr due to the void thing. I don’t think he really cared about what I had to say, so more power to him. He doesn’t need my help, he is doing everything right. =)Your initial comment on your preference for Roark was a good, constructive one. One you may wish to share with Tony if you haven't already done so.
That is honestly in its purest form. The man makes you money, so why wouldn’t you defend him? I can understand that. One of the problems I have with the other guy is that he will not make such an honest statement. If I was a dealer at your level, I would be loyal to Tony if I made money dealing with him. You do not have to like or agree with everyone you do business with. As it sits, I sell most of what I breed locally, so I don’t foresee ever working with Tony, and since the one time I tried to do something with him, he treated me like crap, I can publicly say I have no use for the man.Tony has earned a fair amount of loyalty from me as a vendor because for SEVERAL years now he has been consistently making me money. That is a simple fact. You can call me "Tony's boy" or whatever.
All the more reason I have such a problem with his arrogance. His basic attitude was, I don’t give a damn what was advertised, I am not doing now. He thinks people should just flock to his show, because he is Tony and they used to when he had the only show in town. I see what you are saying, he is putting up the money, true, but he is not following thru with what he is promising people and now that people have some choices on shows, he is losing his business.Another fact, it costs 10's of thousands of dollars to put on a show like Atlanta regardless of who does it. The venue alone is over 9K. Any of you NON-PROMOTER Tony critics (vendors included) ready to pony up? I'm not and don't want to. Its pretty damn easy to get on this forum and sling mud, do you have the stones to ante up 25K for a venue, employees, travel, advertising and whatever else goes into it? Is it really all that easy to do, especially when you know there is a good chance you will stand to lose a bunch of money?
Two things on this, as I understand it (if I am wrong someone correct me) Tony had left Columbia behind. He had decided that he had outgrew that venue and moved his gig to Greenville. That left Columbia open, and other promoters filled the gap. He got upset and tried to move back into Columbia to keep that market. Also, that same logic applies to Roark. He is a business man, and in this business to make a living. Again, as I understand it, Tony became upset that he worked some other shows. Tony shouldn’t expect a business man not to do business with other people.Fifth, As far as I know Tony has no other steady job. I may very well be wrong but it is my current understanding that this is his primary gig. Now, Cathy and friends, What do you expect the man to do when someone else moves into one of "his" cities and try to make it "your" city? Really, do you expect him to hold hands and frolic in a grassy field on a sunny day with all of you?
First, who is Chuck Heard? Second, I didn’t mean to imply something derogatory about you “bailing” on the show. I used the same term for Chad and he is a close friend. I am certain you had your reasons, just as Chad did. I am not faulting you, but the point remained the same. Tony promised the public a native animal display, and I gave him a “free” opportunity to make good on his word, and he refused it. I think I man who will not keep his word is a man of poor character. If you guys pulled out and he couldn’t get another display in time, hey, that is not his fault. But that wasn’t the case, he could have made good on his promises, and it would have made him money. I firmly believe that to be true. But he is so arrogant, he felt he didn’t need to follow threw with his promises. It certainly changed my opinion of the man, and I don’t see how it couldn’t raise red flags to anyone involved in business with the man. If he will not follow thru with his word to his customers, there is no reason to think he will follow thru with his word to venues, venders, speakers, the list goes on. I was one of the people defending him prior to this show. But, I will concede when I am wrong. You were right not to want to associate with this guy. Sorry I doubted you. But that being said, it would have been all turtles. =) ha ha ha ha ha and you know it.I just wanted to make a statement in response to a couple of comments by Chuck Heard regarding the GA Herp Society "bailing" on Tony's show.
