In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

The New System: H's late night ramblings

It was nice to see so many words exchanged about the idea while I slept. Obviously there are opinions on both sides, and we knew that.
HH writes:
Now, if piling on the points WERE the objective, I could have gone back to that thread daily and hit him for something different...as could any/all of the other adjunct mods. However, once the offending activity has stopped, it seems to me that OUR job is done.
Piling on points in and of itself was not the objective, nor was it ever stated that it was. What I and Mike and others are saying is that after Mr. Sanchez's show, he should have been long gone, and a system that didn't produce that end result is flawed.

Randy and Seamus, I long ago in my first notes to Rich about this proposed system told him to exclude me, and stated such in forum. I guess my choice of words in earlier posts here went over your heads ... imagine that. While I have tangled with many of the top karma folks, I don't see disagreements in politics as disagreements in ethics, or dedication to Fauna. As such, your accusations therefore ......well, its not the first time you have spoken "out of your arses".

Seamus, the reason the question was answered when Jim O. asked it vs. when you asked it is because ......... well heck, is that so difficult to figure out ... or if I may use your words, are you that stupid :)

Granted, there are two ways to have that happen - 1) the person is nailed by admin or site mods, and removed, or 2) the adjunct mods hit them until the warning level reaches the critical level and they are suspended. Since the this conversation has swayed to the ineffectiveness of the group in achieving the desired effect (due, in part, to suboptimal participation...which of course would be improved by putting 10-20 of the top karma scorers in place to run rings around us, lol), I addressed it according to that perspective. If the piling of points is not to be the objective, then you are no longer dealing with issues related to the adjunct mods, but pointing towards site moderators and admin.

Harald,

I don't think its that cut and try, as the words of yours which I highlighted are not so easily parsed out. But you are correct if you mean to say that our complaints were not with the ad-hoc's, as Mike and I and others did not come here bashing them. You have to go to a thread started by Wes to find that :). We took issue with areas of the system which had not produced the desired results, IOMHO's.

To clarify a bit more

Since the this conversation has swayed to the ineffectiveness of the group in achieving the desired effect

No, to the ineffectiveness of the system. I applaud those ad-hocs who have tried to have an impact, yourself included. While I am not a fan of posting my "favorites", I feel all of the currently active ad-hocs are more than capable. The system has revealed some obvious flaws in itself, and I recommended a list of quick fixes earlier, separate from a different group of ad-hocs. They were a reduction of the 500 point threshold, more bullets per gun per day, and higher infraction values. How about 10 points for a mini-threat ("you wouldn't say that to my face, punk), 50 or more for a serious one (I have a gun, or a syringe full of venom, so don't ever meet me)?

Thank you for including your opinion, and stating it as such. now since you neither had input into the mods and really didn't contribute to the expectations of the person that did set this up, its really nothing more than saying, "this isn't the way you (JimF) want it".

Webslave quotes:
And, so far, I do FIRMLY believe that this is REASONABLY accomplishing what I wanted it to.

So JimF tell me how your frequent post reflect any difference than others concerning you displeasure with the system? Or I believe you have stated another term, Whine (yours is Merlot, mine is Cabernet). And the pot is still black!!

DragonDad

its really nothing more than saying, "this isn't the way you (JimF) want it".

Did you go to college to figure that out ? I thought my opinions were posted under my label ..... let me check ....... yup ! You had me worried for a minute Mike that they might be showing up under someone else's name !!! Yikes !! :ack2:

So yes, it was my opinion. And it was shared by a few others. Alas !

pot ... kettle ... whine ..... its a long climb isn't it

Mike,

Here's a tune for you to sing .... fill in the blank.

Wow!

Does anybody else think that this place has gotten completely out of control?

I think this forum (and a percentage of the membership) needs to take a long hard look within and try and determine if this is really what they are looking for in an online community.

This place is more like a halfway house for ex-cons then a reptile community.
We've got death threats, slander, posting of personal information, and any number of other questionable activities.

When I first came here, I had the highest intentions of finding a home where I could discuss reptiles with other reptile enthusiasts. Instead, I find myself drawn into battles with almost anyone and everyone about things that have absolutely nothing to do with reptiles.

I have visited dozens of reptile forums, and no where is there anything like what we see here. Think about it people, is this really what you want and how you want to be thought of by your peers?

I would like to thank all of those with whom I have interacted who have been kind and courteous and answered my questions. I realize that most, if not all, will not even notice my absence, but I see no reason to continue here.

I wish you all well.

It really isn't difficult to keep from being drawn into the battles. First of all they're mostly in the BOI, or threads like these that are open to a lot of opinions. If you stay to the reptile discussion threads there are very few battles.

And no, I don't think things have gotten out of hand lately. There are certainly a few loose wheels around. Some have started ridiculous threads, like Matt's today. But they'll be weeded out soon enough. I do agree with those that would like to see their departure sped up. For the record, I'm not speaking of Wes, I hope he's around for a long time. He's one of funniest guys we have here. I would like to see him get off his current kick though.

I totally agree with your post. All of it.
I do not see anyone being "drawn" in. It is the individuals choice on whether to get involved or not. No one is asking anyone to enter any discussion.
If one choses to play, put on your tough skin.

It is a person's choice.

The reality though is that the BOI is the "main attraction" here at Fauna.

Like it or not the BOI spills over into everything Fauna - even the classifieds.

The biggest problem that I have seen since joining is that people just can't seperate the often heated rhetoric of the BOI from the rest of the site. What starts as differing views quickly turns into a flame war only to follow the parties into every other forum on the site.

I considered having a "BOI - like" forum on my site. But I wanted the focus of my site to be a reptile community where folks with similar interests can share their experiences and expertise. The BOI serves its purpose and I have absolutely no reservation in pointing folks this way to do their homework before purchasing.

As for the "sky is falling" routine - well its been falling since I joined and long before. I'd bet that Fauna will be here for a long time to come. Members will come and go. Change is - well change. Some good some bad. The one thing you can always count on at Fauna is change.
