Ok, well really the tail of a male. I noticed this about two years ago when I got my first male. I only had one male, so I had nothing to compare it to, but didn't care that much.

Two years later, and I think 5 males now, all have the same tail structure. Everyone go grab one of your adult male geckos. Feel its tail. What does it feel like? Go get an adult female, feel her tail. Feel a difference?

I find that my males on the bottom of thier tails have a different scale structure then the females. The males feel 'plastic-y'. Kinda sticky, rough, almost like the skin doesn't shed off from their tails. The females seem to have a more velvety tail, like their bellies.

Anyone notice this, or am I just a crazy nut imagining things?

Go on. Try it. You know you want to.

hmmm...

Michael, I don't think you are imagining it at all! Perhaps it is because breeder males are always dragging themselves in order to 'mark' their territory with the waxy discharge from their pre-anal pores? I dunno... but mine are the same way!

I never really thought anything of it, until I got more males and noticed it more. Thats a good guess with the scent, my best guess was for better grip during breeding. Either way, its still pretty cool.

I've noticed it with my males as well. When one of my females had a sexual identity crisis (she developed distinct buldges and started mating with females) she also got this papery texture to the bottom of her tail. Her pores still appear female and she doesn't do any rubbing. Maybe the skin just gets thicker on males so that they are more protected during fights.
