In my quest to source mulberry chow, I made several important discoveries regarding the US silkworm industry...
May be this is something you already know.. but I still want to bring it out to the light. You can view details of my finding on my fan page on FB ladysilkworm.
This is what I have found:
1. Mulberry Farms is the sole and only distributor of chow imported from China. I wanted to have them shipped over but they would NOT sell to me. They said they cannot !
2. Mulberry and Coastal are partners. It is quite possible that coastal joined the industry 4 yrs after Mulberry because Mulberry got tired of breeding millions of worms per month and wanted someone else to take the load and meet their import quota as promised to the Chinese OEM., otherwise, they face a low quota penalty.
3. Every other company are forced to source from Mulberry and charge an even higher price for one stop shopping. Isn't that why ou see mulberry labels everywhere and the silkworm are the same types despite so many different variants are available in Asia?
4. The silkworm strains available here are one generation only. Occasionally a two generation silkwrom comes into the mix but you would nt know what they are.. therefore, you don't know if your laid egg would hatch with or without refrigeration. Often times it is a hit or miss, unless you winterize them for 3 months or wait a year.
5. Of course, they kept it specifically this way so that you can't compete against them and breed and breed continuously.
6. Mulberry trees are so easy to grow. Why do you want to use chow which are expensive and causes massive die offs if you are not attentive?? every kid bred thousands of worms every season in asia... free worms, free leaves.. why are you paying??
