In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Hello,
I have a two year old Timor Monitor that has always been a picky eater and has gone on and off food. But now he has gone off food for a while and is not very active. He is the skinniest I have seen him. I have tried a variety of foods he usually eats but he has shown no interest. Please help. I'll will try to post photos later if that helps.

I can't get you a picture right now but can describe it to you. The cage is 3'*18"*3'. I have about 3" inches of substrate that is made of coconut fiber, dirt, and some moss. The temperature is 85 ambient and about a 115-120 basking. He has two hides but only ever used one. The cage is set up with one large platform halfway up and a smaller one just underneath the light. Humidity is kept around 60-70%. He has been in the same cage for about a year and a half without any problem.

No, I didn't see any nasal discharge but he did breath through his mouth briefly, not often.

Any mucus bubbling out of his mouth? Btw, the only time I've seen my monitors breathe with their mouth open is when they were either overheated or had RI.

No nothing like that. I think he might have been a little overheated since be moved from under his light to next to it

I would try and get the animal into an encloser more suited for monitor lizards asap, and hope for the best.

Minimum of a 4' x 2' footprint so you can create a decent temperature gradiant, cubes don't work well at all.
All basking flood lights on one end, shoot for a 140deg (approx.) basking spot, and 75deg on the cooler end.
A sealed top, (no screen tops), and a deep substrate ( I use cypress mulch or backyard dirt) are very important for maintaining mod to high air humidity.

Temperature gradiant, sealed top (min ventilation) and deep substrate are three very important monitor lizard basics for long term success.

I would advise a vet visit. If that's not possible for whatever reason, a daily supervised warm soak for 20 minutes then attempts to force feed him via a pinky pump or something similar. He could be on the verge of dehydration, which will kill him way quicker than malnourishment. Regardless, the possibility of an underlying illness may still exist; however, keeping him hydrated and nourished will strengthen his immune system which should help him to recover without meds.

Thank you very much for the help. I will see how he does in the next few days and if there is no change will bring him to a vet.
