This little boy came from my litter that had a full chain link albino in it.It was 3-5 weeks premature. There were only 3 boa's in the litter and a lot of slugs!!
The female was bred by a male that had already done one female just weeks before. "Lesson learned."

The one full term looking boa was a hypo het albino male and is perfect.
This little guy just ate its first live meal today and was a bit big for him.(1 day old pink rat) and i was relieved. I would have hated to see him not make it. He does have a cranial issue it looks. He has a small lump where the soft spot on a child would be. Any opinions?
He is very active, likes to be handled.
He was about 1/3 the size of any of my other baby boa's.

Good looking little guy for sure, please be very patient with him
as it will be a pretty touchy road during its first year.

I think i should get some frozen pink mice instead of the pink rat. What do you think Tommy? That bulge is from today's meal as stated above.

When he finishes digesting his meal i will post some good pics showing color and his circle tail. No ladder tail. All circles down his back and tail.

I was worried that he might not be able to digest the meal. When he was born he had a big ole egg yolk still. It fell apart when i moved him to his shoe box and i cut off his cord a bit. But i keep it clean.

Can everyone see my big red square on this ad?? lol. Something new i guess.

IMO(which aint much) I wouldnt feed that guy for a least another 4 weeks
and really let that feeding soak in.His digestive system is just as premature
as he is,if this feeding doesnt kill him move to a mouse pink then 3-4 weeks
offer another mouse pink.
If you have scales track his weight before every feed and you will see mass increase before you see length, then youll know things are clicking right along.

Them red X's means you been Moderated :yesnod:

Good luck with him, Rich!! And definitely keep us posted with his progress.

I do have a triple beam from high school back in the early 80's.The high hair days. lol.

Just to let you know Tommy, your opinion means something to me,weather its a little or a lot. I value yoyr time and info man. You know much more then me and i do listen.
I will follow your advise. I tried a pink mouse a month ago,but no take, tried again, nothing,. I ran out of pink mice, breed my own rats and thought, well,i'll try. I was happy as acn be,but then i realized it was a live rat pink and its bulge was big. I have only used pink mice the 1st year, and they were way to small it seemed,so i started buying rats, then i bred and it seemed that all my baby boa's did fine on them.

Why did you have to say something about the meal killing him man?? Dang Tommy, that will harp on me for a week while i wait to see what happens to him now.
I will follow your advise on the feeding Tommy. He kept most of his weight as far as i could see. He was tiny to start and still just as tiny.

Matt- will keep you updated on this little guy. He has been active from the day his umbilical cord healed up. I thought for sure he was gonna eat.Cant believe it took almost 2 months for him to eat.Now i just want to make sure he lives. Even with the lump on his head. It doesnt bother him??,i am hoping it goes away with growth of the head.

He is my circle back circle tail. lol. If he is all comfy today i will try to get a pic of the lump and tail. But he just ate,so not to much disturbing him.

Thanks for your input you guys.

Prolly cause its much more common then ever gets credited, our intrusions
support animals that would never survive in the wild.
Both sides of the coin can be argued,Ill always side with nature before I allow my selfish human emotions to derail "perfection".
The human finger print has been well proven has destructive to all things earthly.

Just to stay in rightful context, that animal should never leave your care
That should give you something to think about as the week progress :D.

All signs of his 1st meal are gone ! He looks hungry again. lol
I know Tommy,i'll wait. But is 4 weeks a bit too long? I know your critical on how to feed, just dont want him fading away at his 1/4 size of his brother.Any other opinions out there?

I'll post pics of the 2 together for comparison. A bit later.

Naah, aint gonna hurt anything in the slightest
Always consider the wild when dealing with your animals,he got more nutrition in that one feeding then what acouple of small lizards would have provided, provided of coarse
he was able to aquire that much prey in his short time since birth.
He aint burning many calories easing around that tub so actual "requirement" isnt even an issue.
BUT,if you still plan on moving him out
Just pound the chow to him every week and you can get him off before this shipping season ends here in a few weeks.
It is really cool to see first hand how these animals thrive on mere fractions of prey that most keepers offer.I just fed yesterday here so Ill wait acouple more days and then post pics of a Honduran female born here 7/09 thats never seen a meal in under 3 weeks from birth(still on fuzzies to give you an idea of her size)

Tommy,i wont be sending him off. If i do it will not be for $. He will go to someone who likes the handi capped and would not breed him. I have the room for him and plan on keeping now.
I have read a lot about some zoo's and their feeding regimen and the long lives they end up having. I know they pretty much feed like the snake would get in the wild. See what people and money did to them in captivity. Yes,me too. I dont feed hard but i do feed with regularity. I guess i will learn how it turns out on the adult females.Hopefully not bad.I do like animals and feed my dogs just what they need daily as vet recommended. I am actually feeding a couple boa's way less to see the out come in the long run Tommy, but they are growing as quick as the ones i feed more too.

Well I do have opinions on several "things" with animals that are not found at PetsMart:D
We feed our dogs a raw diet and they do real well with it.
Snakes also thrive here based on the same "method"
I will not have another snake here that I did not have control of from birth
because people feed them to much.
Our first feeding trials dont start until 30 days after first shed and we go on from there, can I prove it has an effect on growth rate, only with the animals raised here. I have 5 yr old Longicauda still under 4' and feeding on small prey.

I agree they can go a lot longer than you'd ever think.

My very first litter was a surprise and had to go three weeks before feeding because I didn't even know they were coming and I had to be away. I've left neonates a month without worry.

In their natural cycle, my Pacific Boas will eat every week in summer, and fast for 2 or even 3 months in winter. I let them eat when they want to and don't force them when they don't, unless I notice they start to lose weight.

When it's been a very long time (minimum 2 months) and I've started to panic, I've introduced a prey animal into a snake's mouth and let him think about it. Often they will then eat it, but if they spit it out, that's their decision.
