Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Top Shelf Exotics (Inquiry)

Update of TSE situation

The snakes arrived Thursday 4/20 as promised, the wife signed for them and put them in the quarantine rack. When I got home from work I examined them, they were both 190g, the female looked fine, but the male had some redish discolored belly scales which caused me some concern. Early Friday morning, I emailed the following to TSE:

Pat/Glenn,

The snakes arrived yesterday morning. The female looks very nice, her health seems good. The male however looks to have a problem on his belly. A couple of scales seem to be pinkish-red underneath. I don't know if it is the beginning stages of belly rot, or some other type of infection, but I am concerned enough to bring it to your attention. Any thoughts? I am planning on a trip to the vet tomorrow morning to find out more. What have they been feeding on, and when did they eat last? I would like to let them settle for a couple more days, before feeding.
Bob E.

Around 9:00 I got this reply from Pat or Glenn:

They were all feeding thawed rat pups taken from tongs. Some were a bit hesitant than others in taking thawed so you may encounter a picky moment or two but I would not give in to feeding live as it does not assist the process of switching them 100% thawed.

I had not noticed any discoloration upon packaging and inspection but I am very glad you brought it to our attention promptly. If it turns into anything questionable or serious we will certainly take care of the problem. He may have put up a bit of a fight while bagged or it could be any number of things like a rough journey or bin rub. Sometimes they'll hold onto anything to avoid being snatched from their containers. This can sometimes lift a scale or two in the process. I can only speculate since I have nothing visual to reference.

I would probably give it 48-72 hours to see if the coloration you speak of subsides or not. If it does not I would then go with your first instincts as you previously mentioned and have him inspected just to be on the safe side if you so desire. I would think we would have noticed anything serious upon inspection but I must admit we have been a bit rushed getting some of these orders out so our time spent inspecting all the animals may have been less than adequate. I do think a skin infection would have been spotted though. Hopefully it is nothing serious and subsides for you. If not do not hesitate to inform us immediately and we will be more than happy to assist you.

On Saturday Morning I took them to my Vet. Her diagnosis was that both of them tested positive for Giardia in their fecal exam, and that the male had several Pustules and scabs that she diagnosed as Septicemic/Blister disease. She treated them both with the first of three doses of Metronidazole/Pancur. The male was also given the first in aa series of three Baytril injections. So now I'm out $136.75, and am not a happy camper. When I get home I this email to TSE along with a scanned copy of the vets medical report & her contact information.

Pat/Glenn,

I took the pair to the vet this morning. It seems that both were positive for Giardia in their fecal exam. The male also had to be treated for Septicemic/Blister disease. This will require 3 additional visits for antibiotic injections for the male as well as 3 more treatments for parasites, for the both of them. This news doesn't exactly make me happy as this will come to a considerable sum. What is TSE planning to do about this? I am attaching a pdf file with the vets notation, as well as a contact number for her. I will wait to hear from you.
Bob E.

The nothing no reply, no phone call, nothing to address how they will make this right. I sent the same email to Chris at his cjohnson@topshelfexotics address yesterday and again nothing. Last night I sent this email to Pat/Glenn:

Pat & Glenn,

You haven't replied to my email from Saturday. I sent you proof that the snakes you sent were not in good shape. I provided you with the contact info for my vet, so you could contact her for verification. Still you have seen fit to ignore my inquiry of what TSE plans to do to rectify this situation. Seems like ignoring your customers is something that is Standard Operating Procedure for you two. I can't help but feel this is something your future customers should be made aware of, and as you well know I am not afraid to do just that. I will await your typical smarmy reply, before I post on Fauna Classified. Please forward this email to Chris, so he isn't in the dark when the customer emails start flowing in, thanks to you two.

Sincerely, Bob E.

And in closing I do think that this is something current and future customers should be made aware of. Evidently the housing conditions leave something to be desired at TSE. Belly Rot and Internal parasites aren't conducive to attracting new customers. This has been a bad deal all around. I thought you might enjoy these emails sent by Pat/Glenn after I made the original post as well, this is what the think of the BOI.

You may feel free to remove your foot from your mouth and view your [email protected] address for a message that was actually sent to you this morning regarding shipment. Rather than being ignorant and rude to us perhaps you should try responding so that shipment can be made. In regards to your thread; we do not have time for the garbage and accusation that fills these public forums. We have many orders to ship and only so many hours in a given day. We congratulate you in your efforts to create yet more problems for us as we did not have enough already. You are truly a saint. We await your response to our notice requesting confirmation.

Good day

As requested the confirmation message is attached below.

No worries, we considered the source too in regards to your antics in the aforementioned thread and found it to be quite amusing. It almost seems as if you think you accomplished something, how quaint. I only wish that you are encountered with an equally troublesome experience and met with the same ignorance as the future unfolds. Life has a way of turning the tables so to speak thus I am confident the favor will be returned in due time. Perhaps in the future you will learn to exercise a bit of maturity and understanding in matters you are obviously unaware of. We appreciated your patience while it lasted and are happy to see your transaction coming to a close so we may cease further ties with you and any who have proven themselves to be as equally ignorant in this matter.

I will be certain to pass along your previous message to Chris when he is well enough. Hopefully he hangs in there and returns, we are all pulling for him. I’m sure we will have more insight on his situation after his procedures. I have requested Chris deal with you and this situation once he is capable as I have better things to do than deal with the ignorance which follows mudslinging and ill assumption. I do not understand why he stated you were not his customer, perhaps he simply did not recall as we have many people whom we have dealt with and he is not exactly in the best of health. I am sure when he is well enough he will make the appropriate additions and\or amendments to his posts in your sideshow if he deems it fit.

Respond to the attached confirmation so we may be finished with you. Good Day.

There you have it in their own words :hot:

Wow. The health of the snakes and their arrogant emails signal the final nail in the coffin of TSE. I can't imagine that ANYONE would do a dollar of business with those jokers after seeing this. Chris made a huge error in judgement leaving his business in their hands and it seems to me that they have managed in a short time to run it into the ground. I am sorry you have had to go through this and hopefully the snakes come out of this fine and you get the reimbursement due to you for your vet visits.

Wow, poor communication, rude, and unhealthy animals...

WOW is right.

In their first response , it says do not hesitate to contact us. Then they come out with that last response.......

When your new Ball Python arrives it can be very exciting, I know because I am an enthusiast. It is very imperative that you handle your new arrival as little as possible aside from the initial health inspection. You must absolutely quarantine your new snake completely away from your collection for a minimum of three months. More time may be needed depending on the out come of the quarantine. Meaning, did your new Ball Pythons show signs of R.I. (respiratory Infection), watery stools, Mites, no appetite, ETC. These could be signs of some health problems such as being infected with Pentastomes, roundworms (nematides), Flukes (trematodes), Tapeworms (cestodes), as well as Protozoans such as Giardia, Trichomonas, Etamoeba and Coccida. What I have listed so far mainly affects wild caught snakes which you could have acquired in your collection unknowingly. When buying large adults, be very careful, some people misrepresent them as captive born Ball Pythons. This is a terrible tactic to make sales but many are doing it. You should if you do not all ready have a veterinarian get one and have stool check done, this way you will know exactly what you are dealing with.

This whole situation breaks my heart for all involved....Chris has always been one of the good guys, and he's helpless at the moment to do anything about it!! God speed Chris!!! My prayers are with you my friend!

Um, Chris...if you read what Bob just posted, the snakes are babies, and they have already been to the vet, that's how he got the diagnosis.

Derek, note the date on the last emails posted....they were indeed from before the snakes were shipped. Not that it makes them any more tolerable, I just wanted to make sure you had the time-line straight, from what you said, it appeared you thought they were sent after the snakes had arrived.

That said......I am just sick myself over all of it. It does indeed look like Chris made a terrible mistake leaving these guys in charge of the business, for more reasons than one. If I thought I had a snowball's chance in :censored: of getting a refund, I would cancel my order with them right now.....the shipping delay was one thing, but sending out an animal with problems like that is another story entirely.

Bob, I'm truly sorry you're stuck dealing with this.......

Chris has at times been very rude himself at times, on the forums here. Has he been that way in business? I do not know, no one has said anything to that effect.
Perhaps his employees, observing him in one of his more rambunctious moods, thought that was an appropriate way to deal with customers.

It is not.

I can not base my expertise on being an "enthusiast", but I have slept at Red Roof Inn on occasion, which only means I still have my stupid moments.

I'm with Lucille somewhat on this one. Chris may be unable to participate in the day-to-day stuff, but he picked these guys, influenced them if not also trained them, and is only a phone call or email away. He may sign their paychecks still. There are no good excuses for being rude and unnattentive to customers, except a sincere apology. Didn't see one.

Hey Cat_72,

I already cancelled my order by disputing with paypal and my credit card because I couldn't get TSE to respond to any emails to cancel my order. Yesterday (4/46) I ordered a pair of HET albino ball pythons from peter kahl I received them today (4/27). (So it can be done.) Great customer service and beautiful animals.

Stan,

What did you give as a reason to Paypal? And have you actually received your money back?

I told paypal that it was a breach of contract (because it is stated on TSE 's website that they will process and ship within 1 to 3 days) and also I told them of how they were not replying to my emails. Paypal is doing a investigation but I disputed with my credit card also. What was it that you had ordered from them if you don't mind me asking?

There you have it in their own words :hot:

When this thread first started I was sympathetic to Chris' business situation but agreed that the delays were unacceptable.

At the time I thought that many of the "side allegations" (health of animals, validity of genetics) (many brought by Ian S.) that had been made were inaapropriate given both the original nature of the thread and lack of substantiation.

Now I find myself seriously contemplating whether the animals you received are imports from a farm or were actually bred by TSE. Giardia is uncommon, if not unheard of in the US public water supply (post-treatment) and while it is shed in fecal matter the question beckons - How did it infect TSE's animals in the first place? Giardia is not uncommon in reptiles, but I would have to believe it should be in captive bred specimens. I sincerely hope your animals prove to be the het piebalds that you paid for.

Robert, I too am sorry to hear about the raw deal you are being dealt. Chris, I realize you are sick, but you need to fix this. Gardie, in deed!! I too agree, it is highly unlikely with CBB.
Cathy have you heard anything about getting your snakes? Or is the weather still way to cold to ship?
One other thing, Pat & Glenn, you say you don't like Fauna's BOI forums. I just wonder why. If you would conduct good business you would have no worries about the threads here. BUT, IMHO, I would say your rudeness, as well as the way you have been conducting business will get you no where here. :toiletcla
Chris, do you really want to be pitted in this light?

I thought the same thing "They must be imports". The vet however said exactly what you stated. While uncommon it is not unheard of with captive bred animals. She did point out that it will spread very quickly to surrounding animals. Her bigger concern was the "Belly Rot". Seems like that is indicative of poor sanitation, and a wet environment.
Sorry for the confusing email timeline. I wasn't going to post the earlier ones, out of concern for Chris, but I reconsidered, thinking that I would want to know if I were considering a TSE purchase. Well it's day 6 and still no word from TSE.
Weostan - congrats on the purchase from Peter. I told you you wouldn't have any regrets. You will probably come out with a better value, after I factor in all the upcoming vet bills.

Nope Bobby.....I went and double-checked my email just to see if anything miraculously arrived from them....

I'm starting to have a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. :ack2: :censored:

Giardia? That is usually something that is seen in imported animals, not cbb USA. Either that or animals kept in really nasty conditions. I am really surprised to hear this latest development. Has anyone ever actually met Glenn or Pat in person, or spoken to them on the telephone? This is just ridiculous. :hot:

clarification

I just want to clarify that my previous post was not my words but rather the first hit when I googled the word Giardia (sp?). I should have quoted it as from living jewels website. I apologies for any misunderstanding.

The other hits 300+ also talked about imported ball pythons and this parasite. Call an importer of BPs, they will tell you they almost all of CH and WC come in with it and others. I think at minimum, it raises some very serious questions. Other may want to get stool samples checked ASAP.
