March 22nd and 23rd White House Phone Campaign to protest the Food and Drug Administration ruling, (21 CFR Parts 16 and 1240 [Docket No. 2003N-0400] RIN 0910-ZA21). Also the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (42 CFR Part 71).
These rulings have two major regulations. The FDA ruling (21 CFR 1240.63) prohibits the “capture, offer to capture, transport, offer to transport, sell, barter, or exchange, offer to sell, barter, or exchange, distribute, offer to distribute, or release into the environment” of the following species:
Prairie dogs (Cynomys sp.)
Rope squirrels (Funisciurus sp.)
African Dormice (Graphiurus sp.)
Gambian giant pouched rats (Cricetomys sp.)
African Tree squirrels (Heliosciurus sp.)
Striped mice (Hybomys sp.)
Brush-tailed porcupines (Atherurtus sp.)
The second ruling (42 CFR 71.56) is enforceable by CDC, and essentially proposes to make permanent the temporary ban on the importation of African rodents.
All members of the exotic pet hobby as well as the industry are invited to participate in a nationwide phone campaign on March 22nd and 23rd 2004 in protest of said rulings. Participants are urged to email Ken Walker at
[email protected] with their contact info but are not required to.
Starting at 10am Eastern / 9am Central Time on March 22nd all participants will call the White House switch board, FDA, CDC and each participants state representative. Participants, which are at work, are advised to take your cell phone or take some change to use a pay phone during your breaks. Those people with fax machines are urged to send faxes to the appropriate offices.
Each participant will reference the above dockets upon stating their name, address and social security number (optional). Please express your concerns in your own words as much as possible, but keep it polite and considerate.
Participants are recommended to call on both days and call every few hours (or more if time allows) as to inundate the white house switch board as well as the FDA and CDC with protests against this ruling.
Phone numbers have been provided for your convenience.
