• In the past two days I have gotten emails asking about being requested to provide credit card info in order to register and also to make a post in the classifieds forums. PLEASE NOTE: In no instance will this site ask you for this sort of information. The only time any request for payment is made is if you choose to opt-in for a higher membership level, and that is done SOLELY through PayPal. Anything else is coming from a source other than this site. My guess is that this is coming through Google Adsense, but when I can get someone to send me a screen shot of this sort of request, I will know more.

In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

STAY AWAY FROM TURTLESOURCE.COM!!! i bought a russian tort from these people. i ordered a hatchling and was later informed.... after receiving and payment was cleared... that it's illegal to buy torts under 4" for a pet.

the tort that was shipped to me was sick at 3-4 months. after almost $1000 in vet bills in a month, i had to put the poor little soul to sleep. the vet said that he was shipped underweight. i was in contact with the company who told me to keep them informed as to what happens and i'll get my money back. i told them and haven't heard a word from them. they haven't returned my call or emails.

STAY AWAY FROM THEM!!! they are BAD people. they have changed their contact info twice in two months. this should be a warning to all.

Best wishes to you all!

Posting any correspondance between you and them would be great, as well as copies of vet bills. Were you responding to an ad that they had here on Fauna?

Marc Cantos of The Turtle Source is one of the best in the business. He has a great reputation, so I hope you don't mind a few questions and clarifications.

The first item, regarding the 4 inch law. When purchasing on their website, before payment is made, you are required to check a box that you agree with the Terms and Conditions. They are found here.
http://www.theturtlesource.com/terms-and-conditions.asp

It clearly states, "In accordance with FDA regulations, turtles and tortoises under 4 inches listed on our web site are offered expressly for educational, scientific or export purposes only. They are not sold for use as pets. Teachers may request a discount for your school if available."

I worked as a Vet Tech for 6 years. How do you treat a hatchling tortoise? What costs $1,000? And, "shipped underweight" is not a diagnosis. Fortunately, virtually all vet visits start with the weighing of the animal. So, you should be able to show what the tortoise weighed when you brought it to the vet. And, can you give us a laundry list of what was performed by the vet?

The contact email on the website has been the same for years.

$1000.00? I found a box turtle that had been attacked by an animal and took it to my vet. She kept it in ICU for 2 weeks and gave it antibiotics and cleaned up and stitched a wound. She charged me under $100.00

All legit turtle and tortoise have the 4" disclaimer.

Lisa, any info, proof, e-mail correspondence would be greatly appreciated as your post leaves much in question. I really know nothing about russian tortoises(other than the 4" law)...but did you receive it at 3-4 months of age and it was sick upon receipt, or did you not notice it was ill until 3-4 months in your care? This is obviously a crucial point which you did not make cleart(at least to me).

When posting on the BOI, informative posts with a factual basis and evidence to back it up goes a long way in helping your case and making readers aware. Short, angry posts with little to no proof do not do us or yourself any good.
