In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

retics are tricky little buggers!

How many retics do you have again, Brian?
You're certainly showing me up with all these pictures...but in looking around, I just don't have anything cool to take pics of...I'll either have to start recycling them, or buy new stuff, lol

14 retics... 3 males, and 11 females.

ya i gots plenty of picture material to go around. :raspberry

recycling is good! :)

What size cages do you keep them in? I am building new cages for mine in June, so a few ideas would be welcomed. I am also trying to decide if I want slide open, drop down, or open sideway doors. Any recommendations?

well you might not like the sound of this... but plastic is best!

i use newspaper for substrate and plastic caging... my cages are 6fters... i dont have any 27ft retics lying around so a 6ft is good for me.

i have used wood and it just doesnt last, unless you put down some kind of tile and sealent. even then if you get mites your DOOMED!

i have 4'X2' and 6'X3' size cages... i keep my smaller retics in the 4 fters with no problems. all of the cages have sliding glass doors.

... i dont feed my males too heavy, and i have a couple of small dwarf females.

hope that helps.

I like the plastic cages too, I may use all plastic when I build mine, I just have not decided yet.

My retics are small right now, so I have some time to design cages for them. I was told a 7' x 3' x 3' is big enough to handle an adult, I have even considered a two layer cage for them so they will have another level to move around on. Is three feet tall necessary? The largest retic I have seen in person was 16 feet long, granted they get bigger, but three feet seemed to be extra that was not needed. I would think two feet would suffice.

Michael, I think you will be fine with a 2 ft cage. You really need that height when you go 3ft deep, just so you can get to the back for cleaning.

Ahh, Harald that makes sense. Thank you.

its important to consider with retics... your building them a big hide box... not a house... they dont mind, and actually feel safer in smaller enclosures... that is if you take them out for cage cleanings, and for the occasional stroll around the house...

most females get about 18ft...and dont usually get the weight of a burm... but there are those that exceed this, of course.

i am sure you know males dont need too much space.

... give or take a foot either way and i really dont think it matter, fact is you dont need a 10ft long cage. :hehe: :reddevil:

16ft 150lbs plus female retic in 6' X 3' X 18"

she is actually kind of a small girl... and i feed the crap out of her.

she's built like a burm...can you say Jenny Craig? lol

does jenny have low fat rabbits? lol!

i'm at the peak of fattening her up... after she breeds (nov-dec) (fingers crossed) she will lose some weight (i'm sure you know that).

i beleive feeding is the major factor in getting these to breed... and i mean its EXTREMELY important... i think if you maintanence feed a retic it will lay eggs once every few years.

I have heard of the feed to breed thing with retics (among other things), but I never thought of it being that long a process. I've never bred them, though, so I can't comment from experience. I have heard from more than one breeder that retics tend to breed earlier in the year than other pythons

yes i believe that is one of the keys to breeding success... do you know about the fat maturation cycle? well, i think for some reason as SOON as the fat stores are right, it triggers the follicular cycle. in other words there is some connection with food and hormones... it almost seems there is that ONE meal that pushes the process over the threshold, and into motion.

it would be cool to dig a little deeper, but that would mean cutting up a bunch of snakes and i dont have the time, resources, or heart to do that.

whether the follicles become fertilized is another story! :toiletcla

That is why ultrasounds were invented (ok, not really - but it is a great use)
