• Responding to email notices you receive.
    **************************************************
In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

  • IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ!! About the Google Adsense ads being displayed

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    Addendum: 01/10/2026
    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

For some reason I am unable to post a response to classified ads, but I can respond everywhere else. I get:

machine0020, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

I have been able to respond before, but did something change? Did I do something wrong?

Did you happen to look at the Announcements (posted at the top of each section of the classifieds); or the thread here, entitled Enough is enough in the classifieds (http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=249378)?
The situation is fully explained in both places.

(The opening post of that thread is the same as what is posted in the Announcements)

No, I didnt see that. I'll probably get chastised, or receive negative karma or something, but it seems like this site is becoming a bit of a money grab as of late.Thank you for your quick response though.

Sorry if I inspired an eyeroll, but you might as well just shut off the ability to post for everyone. I just read through all the Announcement I missed. Seems like it would be easier to allow more mods to give infractions, but to each his own. Thanks

Except this wasn't to encourage (or coerce) people to become paid members...quite frankly, it would be kind of silly for somebody to do so JUST to be able to post in the classifieds. Registered members can still post ads, they can still edit their ads, and they can still contact other members regarding ads - all for FREE....so what would be the draw for the "money grab".

Nope, I'm not going to chastise you just going ask you to explain your position.
"but it seems like this site is becoming a bit of a money grab as of late."

You must have a list of things that leads you to this conclusion. So please present them and I will hear your point of view respectfully. If it is becoming this way lately there should be multiple actions you see to support this impression. Could you name a few? A couple?

Do you have to now pay to use this site?
Do you have to pay to post a AD?
Do you have to pay to see a AD?
Must you pay something to contact a seller?
DO you have to pay to use any of the discussion groups or to respond to them?
Do you have to pay to leave feedback for anyone on the BOI?

The answer to all of these is NO. What else is there to cover?
Not much that I can think of but apparently I must have at least missed a few if this site is becoming nothing but a "money grabbing" free website.

A policy was changed to cut down on abuse. Nothing more or less.

:shrug01: Money grab?? Contributing members are contributing voluntarily, as we enjoy what this site has done for us (the entire herp community). You're free to sell animals for FREE, you've got access to loads of FREE info and you can research buyers/sellers for FREE. I'm just not understanding why you feel this way. And that's NOT chastising you; just wondering how you mean "money grab".

I was on here a looong time ago when a lot of "pay to play" things were enacted, so I left. Seems like its headed that direction again. My opinion. I read all 23 pages of the announcement, and I know full well that my opinion means nothing, and will change nothing. I am not contributing (as of now) because I have nothing to sell, and I don't spend a huge amount of time on the internet, period. The return on investment isn't there. Seeing meaningful discussion in the classifieds was good for learning things, but there is also Google. Like I said, I know what I think changes nothing, and I accept that. No need for so many to get all butt hurt. Thats gonna end my contribution to this thread. Thanks and god bless.

You DO realize... you don't have to be a contributor to PLACE ADS? You can buy, sell and browse for FREE. The only thing that changed was REPLYING IN THE AD THREAD. You can PM the seller and ask questions or buy the animal. If you want to sell you can post the ad, recieve PMs from buyers, etc etc.

well how do you become a moderator?
Not really sure how that is relevant to this discussion....but, when the site owner decides there is a need for another moderator, he considers likely candidates, confers with the existing moderators, then asks the person(s) if they are interested.

Basically, to be considered, one has to show a long term interest in this site (length of membership + participation). General demeanor - how they interact with others, how they handle themselves in (online) situations, etc - is one of the factors; and, for obvious reasons, Rich would have to feel comfortable that a potential moderator would act in the best interest of the site.
