In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

UPS, FedEx, Airborne Express, USPS - bad guys.

I agree the petition should be a last resort, but we should get some game plan figured out.

It seems to me UPS is on the verge of shutting everyone down, permission or not. If that happens many more people will be out in the dark.

The way it sits, the pettition is there for 90 days before it closes. I woud hipe by that time we have a clearer idea of what is happening, and how to proceed.

On a personal note, I am allready among the ranks of thoose affected by this situation. As such I allready have nothing to loose. But on the same token, I have long since realized that untill this affects "your" business directly, "your" not likely to do much to change the situation.

Agreed.

I would be willing to get a FedEx account, both to have a backup shipping company and to "help the cause". But I am less willing to jeopardize my Airborne permission with a demanding petition to them.

Kathy,

The first object of this petition is not to allow just anyone to walk up to the counter anonymously and willy-nilly ship snakes! As stated before, we are only trying to get them to ofer the same service they offer to people who ship reptiles and amphibians that re not snakes. In otherwords, to broaden their current allowances to include other harmless reptiles (namely snakes).

The second object of this petition is to get them to treat each of their shippers fairly. It has been said that only "high volume" shippers have been allowed the luxury of shipping snakes, and this is simply not fair to those of us who may ship only 1 package a month. If you are going to have a standard, it should be applied fairly across the board.

I think it is pretty clear that we are only asking to be treated in the same matter as other animal shippers that don't ship snakes. I still believe that you should have a shipper account (its easy enough to signup online) and should have to follow the procedures in place for other reptiles and amphibians.

I didn't think it was actually your suggestion to allow just anyone to come up to the counter to ship. But I think at least one or two others (can't remember who) mentioned or implied that being a goal. That was what I was addressing in that part of my reply.

You can make a man eat dirt, and ask for seconds, if he thinks it's sugar!

I have no problem with getting a petition ready. But I think it is heavy-handed for that petition to be sent to anyone before all other possibilities are exhausted.

If FedEx is willing to go through the processes that we have seen thus far, I think it is only a matter of time before the rest of the companies involved begin to look at what they are missing. While that might take a little longer, only to achieve the same goal as desired by the petition, if it comes from them as their own idea, I think it will go down a lot more smoothly and more permenantly.

If you start involving the government in this (Christian, you know how I feel about the national government!), you are only asking for PETA and USHUS to start screaming about the inhumanity of boxing up live animals. They may do that anyway, eventually. But I don't want to draw their attention to our efforts needlessly.

Just my opinion, folks...

Well, I had to go read that petition again. Quite frankly, I believe it is rather tame considering how I might have written it, which is probably a good thing. It spells out the inequities of the situation, describes the details of how those inequities affect everyone involved, and suggests a remedy to alleviate this inequity.

I read no threat into the words there. I read no level at all of anything someone could consider as harsh or abusive in any way.

The petition is succinct and to the point. Exactly what any correspondence to a CEO of a large corporation should be if you expect them to read it.

I see no fault in telling someone exactly what the facts are, and this petition does exactly that. So I fully support it, as is, without reservations.

I am hopeful that FedEx will be coming to our rescue. I am further hopeful that the merger of DHL and Airborne Express may have given that company a turn for the better as well. I have talked to several people low on the totem pole at UPS and they all say that UPS is after big business and abandoning the small business market as best it can. So I seriously doubt we will get anywhere at all with them. But FedEx and Airborne Express are hungry for any business they can get from UPS. So this may very well work to our advantage. We shall see.....

Quite frankly, the situation we are in now is not tenable nor desirable as a business plan for us to cling to. Burrowing our heads into the sand hoping that the shipping companies will allow us to ship simply by overlooking what we are doing, is a suicidal way of doing business. Once they stop overlooking us, we are tossed like fish on the shore. Us allowing them to pick and choose who they will allow to ship based on arbitrarily ignoring their own rules selectively is short sighted and unhealthy for the long term survival of this entire business. Who knows when suddenly a change in the guard at your local office then effectively puts you out of business. Think it can't happen to YOU?

I've been down the road shipping via Airborne Express and marking my packages in an obscuring fashion that was not a lie, yet did not fully describe the contents of the boxes. And every day I shipped out, I was on pins and needles dreading a phone call saying they have discovered "contraban" in my boxes and the game is over with. When people would ask me how I get my animals cross country to my customers, I would tell them via Airborne Express, and many would say "Huh? I thought they didn't ship snakes," and I would have to tell them about my white lies to get my animals to their destinations. How does this sort of thing make us look to the public at large? Lying just so we can stay in business. It doesn't matter that we HAVE to lie, it paints us all with a rather unflattering image.

When I got my account with UPS, I told them up front what I was shipping. I told them I ship live harmless snakes. Unless they were willing to accept that, I did not need an account with them. I could live with my pins and needles. I had a sales rep come to my place TWICE to inspect and take photos of not only the snakes, but my shipping materials and methods. He said it would not be a problem. He said it would be cleared up the line as far as necessary. So from late April, 2003 until late January, 2004, I had a tremendous weight taken off of my shoulders. I was doing this ALL above board and out in the open. I did not have to worry about my boxes being opened, nor worry about my indiscretion being discovered. NO MORE PINS AND NEEDLES.

Or so I thought.

Apparently, this was NOT cleared all the way up through UPS corporate. So something got back to corporate and they sent word to my local office to no longer accept my packages. This was an excrutiating blow, let me tell you. And you know what? It can happen to any of you at any time. So anyone thinking otherwise is just fooling themselves. And not just with UPS. If you are shipping snakes or anything they do not specifically allow and have not granted you an exception, then every day you are on the verge of being put out of business. Immediately. Temporarily if you can find some other way to sell your animals. Permanently if not.

Anyway, I have a case of opaque deli cups and lids out on the porch, since I was figuring I was going to have to go back to shipping via Airborne Express and this would help to keep the contents from being easily seen if the boxes were opened. But certainly I felt the tension returning already that I faced with every shipment going out of here.

But you know what? I just decided I am NOT going to do it that way again. I am tired of acting like some sort of criminal or embarrassment to society that has to sneak around just to sell my animals. I am not willing to accept being treated like a second class citizen simply because I happen to love what I do, and people are willing to buy my animals IF I can get those animals to them. NOTHING I want to ship is any more dangerous than the thousands of common commodities that those shippers handle on a daily basis. In a lot of cases, they are much less so.

A driver may be afraid of snakes? So what? You will find someone afraid of just about nearly anything you can think of. I know people afraid of crossing over bridges, but that doesn't stop the government from building them. I know people afraid of heights, but that doesn't stop companies from building skyscrapers in which to headquarter their businesses. And I know people who are afraid of flying, but that doesn't prevent the airlines from offering flights to those people who want them. I know some UPS drivers afraid of dogs, but it is their JOB to deliver packages to homes, even if there is a dog in the yard. So to tell me that a shipper cannot accept snakes that are in a triple sealed container because someone, somewhere may be afraid of snakes is NO EXCUSE.

Hopefully FedEx will be our salvation. Because if it turns out that they are not, we, as a group, really have no other choice but to settle this matter one way or the other. If we all have to just not have door-to-door service available to us as an option, because of valid jusifiable legally defensible reasons by the shipping companies, then so be it. But if these decisions that have been long standing for these companies are merely based on some prejudicial arbitrary decision made somewhere in their corporate offices, then this needs to be brought to their attention, fully evaluated with a reasonable open minded discussion, and recognized for the unfair practices they have created and condoned.

Certainly many people are happy with the status quo, if they have their shipping situation presently working for them. And I am also certain they will fight anything they perceive as a threat to that illusion of security. I truly, truly hope that this problem can be resolved without any pain to anyone, and I will try extremely hard to make it work that way.

But if broken eggs are inevitable, my apologies, in advance.

I am all for whatever action you guys feel is necessarry.

BUT

I think boycott was mentioned.

If I boycott the three companies......................
I would be stuck with A LOT of animals.

Sorry but a boycott is not feasable to me.

p.s. someone mentioned that Fed Ex seems to be starting to take action towards letting people ship? I think I missed it....can someone e-mail me the link?

Ritchie - go to page 19 in this thread. I posted a message there with some basic contact info. Bill Zindell may also be the rep for your area as well. First thing you need to do is to set up a FedEx account.

When the dust all settles on this, I (or someone else) will post a complete rundown on the "whats", "whys" and "wheres" so people will have a step by step to follow. But quite honestly, I think it would be best to just jump right in. A lot of numbers hitting them right now could be just what we need to make a favorable impression on the business potential we offer.

Apologies if this has been asked/answered already (if so, please direct me there), but at some point there will be a need to stipulate what exactly constitutes a "Live Harmless Snake". While getting into technical considerations might be premature at this point in the process, eventually they will need to be addressed. I doubt any shipping companies will consider an 8" Corn Snake hatchling to be in the same category as a 12' African Rock Python, though technically they could both be considered "harmless" (depending upon whom you ask). And many cities do have ordinances banning certain exotics, so that could be a factor.

Since these companies do currently accept lizards and frogs, can anyone shed light on the existing guidelines for them? Are you required to indicate on the box/label exactly what specie(s) of lizard or frog you're shipping? If so, there must be some list or database kept by the companies of allowed animals. I'm assuming they refuse things like Dendrobates (poison dart) frogs or Gila Monsters.

Also, it might be helpful if someone who has had their snake boxing/packaging approved by a carrier could post a set of photos detailing the materials and boxing method. While many people are familiar with these things, it might be useful for novice shippers to actually "see" what's considered acceptable packaging, rather than just reading "cardboard box with foam lining", which could be interpreted any number of ways.

With FedEx, you need to send an example of the shipping box(es) you will be using to ship your live cargo in. Once these are approved, part of the contract you need to sign will stipulate that you can ONLY use the types of boxes you have provided for their testing.

Now if you you send them an example of a box that is big enough and sturdy enough to hold a 12 foot python, I guess you may expect to get some questions asked about it. I would expect something like that would be astonishingly expensive to ship that way.

Here is the report I received back from Fedex concerning the testing. I originally sent them 2 boxes (one of each size that we use) inside another box. The 2 boxes were packaged just as if they were reptile shipments.

Page 6. Final page. This is the original paperwork I submitted to get the testing done. It is also part of the file.

Personal opinion is that anything outside the file is useless. Salesman's promises, customer support's phone calls etc. Get it in writing and pay attention to what the way they word things (or don't word them).

In originally talking with the salesman I stated we were looking at shipping lizards. He didn't see a problem but felt snakes would have been a problem. All the paperwork I submitted I wrote "Live Harmless Reptile" without size definitions or mentioning species directly. In dealing with UPS previously they stated specfically lizards only.

shipping snakes

overnight with fed x is the way to go,airborne has been late a few times, forget about using airborne on the weekends unless you want to send dead snakes.usps is risky & illegal.ups is so so,depending where it's to go,my experiences with over 2 dozen shipments over the summer & winter months.send us your expeiences with shipping snakes,ALSO WRITE ON OUTSIDE OF YOUR PACKAGES PERISHABLE &/OR AVOID EXTREME TEMPERATURES,ARROWS POINTING TO TOP OF PACKAGE....

Ok so if it's my understanding...

1. I get in touch with my local sales rep?
2. I ask to get a permit (or waiver) to ship live harmless reptiles?
3. I tell them I want to submit a box test for such permit?
4. I submit the box test?
5. I send the results to my local sales rep?

Does this sound right? After 44 pages I'm a little confused on the process.

That is pretty much it in a nutshell. The above list doesn't count all the in-between phone calls to the sales rep and people to keep the process going. I really feel the key to success with these large companies is presistence.
