I have three girls that were showing *all* the signs of ovulating back about two to three months ago, laying inverted, blah, blah, blah. Well I never got to see actual ovulation due to a very hectic schedule on my part. However they have all since been through two shed cycles and are still past due on any 27 day lay period. They are big girls, and last year one of them fooled me into thinking she wasn't going to lay and then one day *bam* 5 eggs that were forty some odd days past the last shed.
All are currently feeding on small f/t rats and have been feeding all year once every week to two weeks.
Anyway, last year it was just the one that surprised me...now I've got three that seem to be doing it! And all very late in the season. All of them are sit in perfect coils. They are certainly big enough to be holding eggs (I learned from my gal last year that I suck at feeling for eggs). Warm side is 90, cool side is 78 (they have big two foot by two foot tubs).
So since my friend's snakes are breeding I thought I could maybe check these gals by seeing if they were interested in the boys that they bred with last Nov-Feb. If they locked I figured they were not gravid.
They did the tail wagging, but instead of accepting the male all three of them produced and streaked a small amount of blood that they then trailed on the paper towels.
I've read that this is 'scent laying' from one source, but it didn't say anything about other than 'that's normal'. I've seen them wag and scent with urine and such last year, but not blood like this...and it was all three gals and different boys. I have two more gals ready to go this season so I placed them with boys and no blood (no locks either, just two snakes hanging out).
So are they wagging blood at the boys to say "go away I'm gravid and pissed"? (I removed the males by the way).
