So I have been waiting for a while to post about my new 'baby', Binx, the leopard gecko until after I have had him two weeks and took him to the vet.
He was a rehome/rescue I found on Craigslist and I was very concerned as it was stated in the ad they would release him if no one came to get him. When I picked him up I was shown how he was kept, on the floor in the same area where the cats were and was told they weighted the top with books because the cats tried to get after him. I noticed white on his toes which the owner stated was 'just from paper towels' that is being used as his substrate.
Yeah no. That is old shed.
He was fed strictly on mealworms and had calcium suppliments with D3. His humid hide was a tupperware with a wet napkin on the bottom, and the light source was a lamp with a red bulb. (I dont know if the humid hide was bad but it certainly was not something I had heard used before?)
I took him home, cleaned his cage and got him set up with a black light and fresh water. I also introduced a couple gutloaded crickets the next day.
He ate a little and I resisted bothering him until last night unless he needed water.
Onto the vet report!
He received a clean bill of health. Only concern is making sure his humidity is up and he needs to lose some weight. He weighs 69 grams. The vet showed me how to remove the shed from his toes and suggested some more lively food and exercising.
I will start handling him daily and I want to change his substrate but I am going to wait until his toes have healed up from the old shed removal.I also want to change his tank up because his current set up is so boring.
In the subject of food changes, he has shown no interest in crickets. I wonder if it is because I bought large crickets for him? All the crickets I have given him have died by natural means, and not from being eaten.
Should I try with small crickets? Experiment with dubia roaches? There isnt a local source for roaches so I will need to do some research.
I will post pictures tonight!
