In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Ok, I might be missing something obvious to others but...

Can someone tell me what "shot gun advertising in classifieds" means? I have never heard that term before.

Jason Brennan

Shotgun advertising means to take the same ad and post it in several different classified sections. Kind of like the effect you get from a shotgun shooting buckshot at a target. Hey, I didn't make up the term!

Instead of segregating their animals into groups of like animals (pythons, colubrids, geckos, etc.) and putting the correct animals for sale into the correct forums, some people will make up just ONE large ad showing everything and then cut and paste it into every classified forum on the site.

This has happened several times, and I had to go through deleting all of the ads that had been placed in a half dozen or more forums. I really have better things to do with my time.

Does that help explain it?

That explains it perfectly. Thank you. I had just never heard the term before is all.

And I agree, that is pretty annoying.

I've been playing around with this new warning system, and it works pretty well. I created a test logon and posted a message. I then created an Emergency Lockout! level and tested it out on this message.

Not only does it immediately ban the user, but it also automatically sends an email and/or PM telling them that they got a warning, from whom, and why.

It looks like ALL of the warnings made will send the user notification that it has happened.

Pretty slick.

I added the Emergency Lockout! level in there because if there is someone REALLY causing a problem, this way will be much faster than the usual way I would have to block someone's access. It would stop whomever it is, right in their tracks before they could do more damage. I don't expect to have to use this very much, but when I do need it, I will likely be glad it is there.

Removing the ban is as simple as moving someone out of the banned usergroup back into the registered member usergroup.

Couple of things I haven't figured out yet:

(1) How to change the ban level.
(2) How to remove a warning black mark on a user.

I'm still playing around with the warning points, trying to get them arranged in a logical fashion. Some will just be a judgement call on my part as to how severe they are. I want nearly all of them to be warnings with at least two chances to straighten up. Since I haven't figured out how to change the ban level, this is the cap I am working with.

I only have one, besides the Emergency Lockout level that will be an immediate banning. That is for Flooding. Flooding is when someone malicious attempts to flood a message board with message after message. I already have blocks in place to prevent this, but it can still be circumvented by someone resourceful enough.

Thanks for all of the feedback. It has been very helpful to me.

Shotgun advertsing

I thought bearded dragons ARE agamids?
Does this just mean that you can only post each ad in one section? Like you can't post it in Colubrids and Miscellaneous?

I think you should give someone a pretty decent chance to post their full name before they get a warning, in case they're lazy like me and haven't made a signature and forget sometimes.

Looking at what appears to be the current proposal for the point system and Rich's comments on this thread, I think that's sort of built in...

With the exception of very grave situations where it's obvious that an immediate banning would be appropriate, the point system style suggestion that gives additional weight to certain infractions seems designed to be exactly what the name suggests... a warning. If you're allowed twenty five points worth of honest mistakes and forgetting your name only counts as one... doing it once or twice and seeing that number might prompt you to stop being lazy and just create a signature (which allows you to be really lazy and never type your name again).

I think Rich had also expressed that the potential consequences would be somewhat subjective to the judgement of the Moderating staff... I seriously doubt he would ever become personally vindictive or petty like a few other board owners we all know of, but this would allow him to warn someone via PM or on a thread that there needs to be compliance with this before issuing a warning. There would be an analysis of the infraction taken in context and as a situational measure... first time poster might get directed to the posting rules and gently reminded, multiple problems or long time users would be facing slightly less lenient judgement on the issue.

Basically it really doesn't sound like there would be much of a change from the way the board has been operated in the past, there would simply be a better and more accurate way of tracking past infractions, making it easier on WebSlave to see trends as well as giving individual users the ability to easily see when they are starting to cross lines and reach that dangerous area where they might be facing banning if their behavior doesn't change.

Only thing I personally might ask as I utilize it myself on occasion in some posts, and the only potential problem I could see as being recurring is concerning the use of expletives... The posts on here are generally phrased in a fairly conversational manner and there is a tendency for mild expletives to crop up in the vernacular as a means of emphasizing a statement... examples being "Hell Yes!" or "That's a damn pretty boa."... not phrases that most adults would find offensive but something people might not want their kids to see and something of a grey area in terms of personal responsibility... I for one would never let my kid surf the web alone if I didn't think they were mature enough to handle whatever they might come across (not that I have any kids)... But others might feel that it's Rich's duty to parent their kids while online... Which means some of us might have to watch out language a bit more than we have been.

The way I figure it though, Rich isn't likely to start implementing it without a more complete discussion or explanation of what is and is not considered acceptable and those who really don't like it have the option to simply stop using the message board. It's not like there are any classified account deposits to be refunded or anything.

Concerning the definition of 'profanity'.

Yes, this is certainly one of those gray areas. Kind of like pornography. In most cases you really can't put a black and while definition of it, but you know it when you see it.

I am not interested in protecting childrens' eyes from the real world, as that would be impossible to do. The type and amount of profanity that would warrant a warning is such that I believe most people would immediately recognize and agree that it was offensive enough to warrant a black mark on the poster's record because of it.

I will also take into account that someone may just lose control of their language along with their temper and try to allow for this. I do wish there was a time limit embedded in the system that would allow the minor infractions to expire, but I guess I can't have everything.

Thanks.

Is there any point in time that the points will be erased and you get to start over.

Lets say 100 points to BAN someone.
What if fifty (50) years from now...when I am 83. What if I reach 100? Will I get banned then? Or will the points start over every year or two or three?

No there is no time limit built into the system. In some respects I would like that to be implemented, but sure as shooting, that would make it's own problems. Even as it is, it may cause problems. With some people if you tell them where the line is, they know they can do ANYTHING up to that line before there are repercussions. So they will feel that have carte blanche to do ANYTHING they want up to 24 points if 25 points is the ban level.

In some respects, it would probably be better that someone not know where the cutoff point lies.

Putting a time limit, would possibly even make things worse.

But honestly, is there really much difference between someone whom would be a problem over 6 days and someone doing the same things over 6 years?

I have added another warning to the system:

"Discourtesy towards another member".

It's only a one pointer, since I just want to use it as a nag to remind people that I want them to lighten up the nipping at each other in the forums.

Maybe I need to post another poll, but worded differently. Something like, "which of the below listed warnings do you feel should NOT be used?"

Oh well. Can you all see the complete list of warnings and weightings from the link on the front page of the message board?

Do you think a 25 point ban limit is reasonable?

Anything rated too high or too low?

I have found the screen to use so I can remove bans, or adjust the warning number applied to a member. I mistakenly clicked the wrong user this morning and wound up banning him accidently. So I had to figure it out in a hurry!

Thanks for your help in this.

John,

It's on the front page of the message board where all of the major categories are shown. To the right of the screen under the text that says "Welcom back........."

But here's a direct link to save you time hunting for it:

Warnings Page

I have a bit of a problem with the "Discourtesy to another member" thing. Does that include the lighthearted jabs many of us make at each other throughout the posts on these boards? We ALL make them back and forth in fun(at least those of us that have been around for a while do), so I was just curious how specific this is.
And if it is more along the lines of abusive language, threats, etc, then maybe all of those kinds of things should be lumped together as one. Abuse/Threats of any kind should carry the same penalties, regardles if it's in PM, e-mail, or on the boards in my opinion. Just a thought.

And this is just me, but I think that failure to provide a Full Name should carry ALOT more penalty than just one point. And I also think spamming should be an immediate ban. But that's just me;)

Shotgun Advertising

Rob,
It was on page 5
