• Responding to email notices you receive.
    **************************************************
In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

  • IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ!! About the Google Adsense ads being displayed

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

webslave.. fauna seems awefully slow lately

I get the green screen on AOl and IE alot so I don't use them, I tried IE again after I restarted my computer and it takes forever to load, green screen for a couple of minutes but no error messages

What OS and IE are you on? My IE does load fauna with SP2 and CSU 04/05 updates but loads very slowly.

Also my computer is not new, its a 256 meg ram PII so its not a fast one at all

Well all the office machines are AMD Athlon XP 3000+'s and the machine im on now is a AMD Athlon XP 3200+, 2GB PC3200 DDR Memory, 2 Serial ATA 400gb Drives

Im guessing its not the hardware :)

Different operating systems on various machines as well, 200 corporate, XP professional, xp home on my laptop, etc. etc.

Same issue no matter which OS

I changed the coding on the banner ads to drop the iframe specific code. Let's see if that makes any difference......

Now we're getting somewhere..... I think....

Now that string is no longer coming up on my end, but now its loading the pages, displaying the url it is seeking and then hanging halfway thru loading. It will sit there for about 15 seconds as before at a green screen and simply display a "half done" status bar... It does seem to be loading a bit faster though Rich!

I'll attach a screen shot... I hope this is helping track down the issue....

Chris, your hardware is much newer and should be much fsater than mine!

On IE and AOL browser mine sucks so I don't use it, I use netscape and its pretty fast to me even with dial up.

Rich, Ill check IE again with the new change and see what happens.

I am using a 2.66 desktop, a 3.06 laptop and a 466 ibook. Load time with Firefox is about two seconds, IE 6 is still taking about 10 seconds.

It did load faster on IE this time, still loads tons faster on netscape so I really think its an IE thing

When I access the site with Mozilla, I do not get the lag and delay that I do with IE. So I'd have to agree that the problem is IE specific.

I agree today is seeming like fauna is slower than normal.

Page generated in 0.65937901 seconds (77.73% PHP - 22.27% MySQL) with 16 queries. Normally its a fraction of this, with more queries.

Well hard to say what is going on. At every level, updates and patches take place to the software. I am running Windows XP and I get a notice of a new update about every three days! My server software gets updated automatically whenever a new security hole is found and patched. Once when this happened ALL vBulletin systems crashed with a new PHP update that killed a function that vBulletin needed to operate. Sometimes patches will cause an incompatibility where none existed before, and everyone points fingers at someone else for being the blame.

I have been using that banner ad software unaltered for a couple of years now, and NOW it seems that IE is having a problem with the coding. One good thing is that I am in the process of converting to a different banner ad system, but that is still a bit down the road before I can fully convert to it. Right now I am testing it using the text ads at the top of the screen and those text boxes in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Eventually the graphic banners will be on there as well, as long as it runs stable with the text ads. Will that make things better? Who knows? It could make things worse. Wouldn't be the first time something like that happens.

Anyone wanting to get a good fright should really look at some of the message boards geared towards web server admin stuff and read the problems that crop up behind the scenes. Sometimes it is best to not look under the hood and just be glad that MOST of this stuff works pretty well MOST of the time..... Fortunately I found a place where I could get managed servers fairly reasonably priced, so the tech guys there handle most of the problems and stuff and I just have to stay on top of the higher level design and maintenance problems. I don't have the time nor patience for the details needed to work at that level any longer. I used to enjoy it, but it is SO time consuming. I figured my time was better spent doing other things.

Anyway, let's see how this all works out. Bear in mind that there is no law that says that there can't be more then one problem going on at the same time. The thing to do is to try to tackle one symptom at a time....

Thanks.....

I would throw my vote in for something in IE as well... I'm a Firefow user, and I've always considered FC about the fastest site around. Even big threads load for me in well under 3 seconds...

If it's any consolation, Fauna seems to be running great for me the last couple of days.

I too am on Comcast and they were indeed having problems this past week. Frustrating so at least I caught up on some book reading I had meant to do! :)

Now that that particular problem seems to be solved (for now) you may be able to rest easy for a short time, Webslave.

With all the other things you do this is a large slice of pie to mintor and I can only imagine how time consuming it is. I thank you as others do for being dedicated enough to give us the opportunity to meet here on this site. We probably don't tell you often enough.

You could look at it this way, if we didn't notice when things went wrong then the site isn't interesting enough for us to pay attention to! :dgrin:

It is nice to get a milkbone and a pat on the head every once in a while though.

Here, Rich...pat, pat... ;)

today it seems a bit fast for me... i do miss the quote bold underline and italicise options in the quick response area though however so far today it seems to be running quicker.
anyone want to mail me a copy of one of these alternate browesers... shoot 7 mg would take forever to DL well anything over 4 or 5 does LOL

Robin I downloaded opera last night, it is faster for me than netscape is and works great with fauna, if you email me your address I can burn it and netscape on a CD and mail it to you. It took about an hour to download on dial up :(

my email addy is [email protected]

I do believe it’s an IE problem however on my new laptop IE loads fauna in about 2 seconds with version 6.0. In the same time my 4 year old desktop loads the pages in about 30 seconds. Here’s the kicker it also has IE 6.0. I get no errors on either one. It might be something with the updates to each version. Needless to say I use FireFox on my desktop and IE on my laptop.

BTW I’m using the 3meg cable service from Charter so the internet is fast.
