In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

what happened to the sub forums?

thats pretty much how all the forums are..i mainly post in the leo forum, and the leo photo gallary, i just want to know why they were put into the discussion forums..

I just considered it as a failed experiment. The photo gallery subforums as well as the links to the new photo gallery section in each discussion forum were barely being used. Well, except in the Leopard Gecko forum, so I decided to just drop the idea and streamline the forum structure.

More may be following. I'm getting into a "use it or lose it" mood lately, so if I see some sections that appear to be just wasting space, they will just get axed and the threads there rolled into another one.

Based on the traffic (or lack thereof) in the discussion forums, I am SERIOUSLY considering just eliminating all of those species specific snake forums and roll them into the larger GENERAL SNAKE DISCUSSION FORUM, etc.

I really don't know why the discussion forums here are so underutilized, but I am pretty much about done trying to figure it out and just give up on them completely. I go to some other sites with a fraction of the membership base this site has and their discussion forums are just booming. Obviously most people have no use for them here. So why bother?

I think it would be a big mistake to give up on the discussion forums and delete them completely. Look at all the time and effot that has been put in by your users to make the Leopard Gecko Forum as popular as it is! Why bother, you say? Well because you have a fairly large and very dedicated community of Leo keepers that count on your forum to learn, communicate with other keepers, share their experiences and share pictures of their animals. How you could even consider just getting rid of that really boggles my mind. If you want to get rid of some of the forums not related to herps that get little traffic, cool, but not the herp related forums!

The Leo Forum has a total of 23,325 posts, it is without question the second most popular forum on this site. The next most popular looks to be the Ball Python Forum, with a total of 2,275 posts. You know, it just takes the right person or people to get the ball rolling on these forums. It is obvious to me that the right person/people have not been posting on your other herp discussion forums, but all it takes is one person to get things rolling! I would offer to do so but I am not much of a ball python lover, I am a leopard gecko lover.

Please do not give up on the forums. If you were to do that you would be especially doing a disservice to the folks on the Leo Forum mainly, as they are a pretty tight knit group with new people coming in on a regular basis.

No Kelli, I would not drop the Leopard Gecko forum. But look at the rest of the lizard forums. I could just as well roll all of them into one forum and call it the All Other Lizards Except Leopard Geckos Forum at no real loss, I do believe. Heck, after YEARS of these forums being here, I have 18 threads in the Tegus section, 27 threads in the Uromastyx forum, 30 threads in the Skinks, forum, etc., etc., etc. Why bother keeping them? I think people have pretty much told me by their actions that they don't want them. So why should I fight it any longer?

No, I am getting more and more of the mode that people have to prove to me what they want here. I'm tired of trying to guess at it.

Take all the lizard forums, except the leopard gecko one, combine them and let it be that way. IF, at some point in the future, there are enough people regularly using a particlar reptile, lizard in this instance, forum that they need and would utilize a forum of their own, then create one then.

Make things as tight as you can but don't rule out loosening up and re-opening a forum should user demand dictate its necessity.

Maybe I should qualify this a little more.

What I mean by "telling" me is by SHOWING me what is needed. In other words, if you all want a Skinks discussion forum, SHOW me by posting skink related threads. Otherwise I will just assume they are necessary here. People will TELL me to set up all kinds of forums, and then they go unused.

Of course, I guess now I am listening to those people who have been telling me to cut out some of the unused forums..... :slamit:

WebSlave, It is a good idea to combine some of the underused forums. There's sortof a critical mass thing goin on as to whether a forum is active or not. I see it in my own actions when I decide to post or not to post in a particular forum (on any site not just this one). Too few posts and/or too little action on a forum makes me think my post will not be read or answered and I don't post. Others I'm pretty sure, do the same. I've started posts with "I know I should post this in the XXXX forum but its pretty dead over there so I'm posting it here..." and I've read other posts starting out like that too!

But if a little posting action starts and readers see it, it gets the ball rolling and more people will think it is worth their time to post there. Combining forums will combine the traffic too, maybe enough to get the ball rolling and get some of those forum(s) over that critical mass level to where others feel its worth their time to post, too. And, voila! (or as my idiot friend says, and VIOLA!)

I like the species specific forums. I check them daily for new posts. I think that it would be a big mistake to get rid of them. The leopard gecko forum took off relatively recently. A bunch of people got ticked off at KS, came here and realized how much better it was. If there was just a general all rolled into one forum, at that time, I think that users would be a lot less likely to make the switch / spend their time here. I personally, would not bother posting in the snake forums at all if they were all rolled into one.

Re-reading my post, it sounds a little harsh and I know that you're doing an amazing amount of work to make this site what it is...

I hardly ever post on the BOI, most of my posts are in the discussion forums. When you solicited memberships, I donated to help support and grow the site. Next thing I know the leo photo gallery forum was gone (I really miss the one in the leo forum, in the other forums this was a good move), and just about all the forums I've posted in are on the block. I kind of feel like the rug was pulled out from under my feet :(

Actually I pulled the subforum photo galleries because it no longer made sense to keep them now that I have incorporated a real photo gallery into this system. It just seemed rather redundant to have TWO photo galleries for each section. The newer one allows a whole lot more flexibility for people to use it to host their photos, plus have all their photos stored in their own member gallery. Besides, most of the photo threads in the subforum photo galleries were bound to turn into discussions anyway, so why not kee them all together and simplify things a bit?

As a general rule of thumb, what I will be looking for is forums that have not had a post made in them within 1 month. Any in this category will be subject to having the threads moved somewhere else and that forum deleted. So, in order to KEEP a forum around, all anyone has to do is to post in them at least once a month. I figure if that isn't happening, why bother to keep the forum around? It obviously is not being used by anyone? So why clutter things up for nothing? And I have had quite a few people suggest that I cut back on the forums, so perhaps this is the proper criteria for me to use to make that determination.

So as I have said before, use them or lose them. If with over 17,000 registered members, not ONE can post in a particular forum in 30 days, really, what is the sense in keeping it?

Rich,
Would it be possible to have the photo gallery listed as a subforum? I just mean that on the top of the Leopard Gecko Page, under subforums, it would just link to the leo section of the Photo Gallery. I think having a quick link there would encourage people to use it (and to not post in the discussion section). I know with the leopard gecko rollover it's realy tough deciding which are discussion and which are "look at this guy" type of posts.

Maybe it's just me, but I personally don't use the photo gallery or subforums that often, but it's nice to look through once in a while.

Really, I don't see where the number of posts in the Leopard Gecko forum are such that it is going to be a real problem for people having their photo related posts in there.

Maybe when the dust settles and I see which forums are going to remain here I can do that. But for now I want some simplification and standardization with the forums. When I originally set up that photo gallery subforum in the Leopard Gecko forum, I got a bit of resistance to doing that because some people felt it would isolate the photos too much from the discussion forum itself.

If anyone wants to go to the photo gallery, the link is right at the top of every page in the Inside FaunaClassifieds menu bar. Really, do I NEED to have redundant links everywhere on this site?

Some people said I had TOO many forums here, so I have to use my best guesses on which ones to remove.

I'm going to be spending quite a bit of time in the Chameleon forum learning about my new pet. :shrug01:
