    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

im looking to get a different kind of python.something thats active and moves around.ive had ball pythons,boas,corns,blood and all that good stuff but want something like aretic or burm.are burms or retics very active im going to get one of those most likely but which is more active and likes to explore.im not sure when im getting one after alot of research i know that for sure but if some one can let me know of a good active python let me know.
 
Heh- he might not be typical, but my male ball python is the most active of my snakes. When I have him out, he never stops moving, wants to explore everything (my boas will normally poke around a bit and then just hang out a few minutes later).... and the ball is always roving his cage at night pushing on ALL the cage furniture. Not "timid" at all! But from what I've heard, that's not quite normal..... ;) From what I've seen of burms and retics, I'm not sure if they are MORE active than the snakes you mentioned... mostly I see them (at reptile stores in the area - they don't sell them here anymore but a couple of places have full grown retics & burms as "mascots") just hanging out just like most other snakes....
 
yeah that is weird for a ball to be that active all of mine wouldnt move that much ever but to eat and soak.im hoping to get a burm or retic but no luck so far.
 
I have both burms and retics. The retics seem a little more active, they take a little longer to settle down then my burms do. I also have Children's Python, they are very active, they love exploring everything. My jungle carpet Pythons are very active also, they are pretty quick too.
 
Just out of curiosity, what's with all the rapid turnover? The boa you were posting about was sick when you got it, or got sick shortly after (I don't remember, and don't have time to go looking). Pretty much as soon as it showed signs of improvement you were advertising it as healthy and eating great. Then all of the sudden you have a new blood python, with bumps, that you are all worried about...it sheds, looks ok, and is now posted for sale (a ft bigger and eating great, and you only had it for what - 3 weeks?). And now you are looking for something else. Do you have some kind of list that you are trying to check off or something, just so you can say that you have kept a, b, c, d, and e? Meaning no disrespect, I would recommend keeping a species long enough to learn about it and keep it healthy. Then, when you are ready to get another, do your research and and make a choice. It sounds like you are looking for specific traits in your "pets", but you seem to also be of the mind that reptiles are more-or-less disposable.
 
im just having troubles finding something that i can cope with if you know where im coming from.im just looking for a nice looking,active or even seimi agressive python.somthing that has charactor in him/her im just more and have been for awhile interested in burms and retics.i know how big they get and everything and helped a friend with his that was about 14ft or so last year when i lived with him.it was a hand full but im ready to get one of my own.i know most people dont know what im talking about when i say charactor in a snake but thats about the only way i can explain it.
 
I absolutely know what you mean by character...but you aren't giving anything a chance. If you don't take the time to learn about the snake...how it responds to various things, what makes it tick...how do you figure you will know if it has "character"? Because it isn't biting you? or do you want it to try desperately to get away when you try to hold it? Believe me, that stuff gets old fast - then you have a snake full of character that you are trying to get rid of. Let me ask you this: What is the longest you have kept any one snake?...not how long have you worked with a given species, but kept one specific snake. If you don't take the time to learn what a snake is like, how do you expect to appreciate the differences? I've kept burms, rocks, retics, anacondas, bloods, Bci, carpets, ETBs, ATBs, cobras, rattlers,(and the list goes on)...and they are all different. Sure there are some similarities, but there are differences between the species, AND the individuals.
On the other end of that discussion, if you are having a hard time finding something you can "cope" with, you shouldn't be looking at retics or rocks. Grow a midsize snake to adulthood...house it, feed it, keep it healthy. Get a feel for things before you try going for the big guys...Do you even have any idea of the long range costs associated with owning a large snake? Or are you just going to be another one of those people that decides they don't want to deal with it when it gets too big (or develops a personality that you can't "cope" with)...given what I have seen here, I suspect that to be the case. You could prove me wrong, who knows...maybe all you need to find is the "right snake." But will you even recognize it when you do?...or will it be gone before you realize how great it is?
 
well i think the snake i had the longest was my female ball python.i had her sense she was only a hachling(also my first snake)and i raised her for about 2-3 years then i got a sav monitor and got rid of the ball.i give you credit for working with venomous hats off to you.i would love to work with them but woundnt want to take the chance of getting biten LOL.as far as a midsized snake ive been looking into carpets and white lipped pythons and been doing some research on them.you are right though i should grow a nice midsized(6-7ft) boid into adult hood and see how much all that cost and to house it feed it ect.as i stated before i help a friend with his big snake and it was a handful let me tell ya(i only had my ball then)so ya if i had to deal with that all day every day it would be a little rough.what do you think would be a nice active midsize snake to work with(6-7ft)?and what was your experence with him/her?got any pics?
 
Stick with your blood, lol. It'll give you a big snake feel in a medium snake size. (I know, I know, they aren't active enough for you. you want active, buy a bullsnake, lol) For you, I would say stay away from whitelips. Bcc or Bci are good choices that will give you some size/bulk to play with...but you've already gone that route, and weren't satisfied. Dumeril's boas, carpets, yellow anacondas - all great snakes. Anacondas (females, anyway) will also give you some bulk to work with. The only pics I have (other than baby pics) are on my website...it's easier for you to go there and look than for me to resize them to post here. When I get a chance later, I will pull up and post a few shots of babies.

Steve, really take in what is being posted here. You have a lot of time to find out what the next animal will be. Going from one to the other is just stressful for both you and the reptiles. Take your time and a few years.
 
Just out of curiosity, Steven, do you still have the savannah monitor? Or has that gone by the wayside as well?
 
LOL no i dont hav it any more i got rid of it a few years back.i had him for about a year and gave him to a friend who was interested in savs.i never realy like lizards to much but the sav was givin to me so i thought i would take care of it till i found some one to take care of him.im in no hurry to get a new boid im still doing research on a few of them right now.if no buys the blood i will keep him till i find somthing or what ever.the only things im doing research on right are yellow condas,carpets, and well thats about it fro now.
 
so, what did you feed the blood to get him to grow so much in 2-3 weeks, lol...or is that just a marketing strategy?

when i messured him he was 2ft and 5in but still wasnt strechted out all the way.he is eating 2 small f/t rats every 7 days.
 
LOL, what does it matter anyway, it is just a snake and no one really notices because it is small.
 
i remeasured him he is 2ft 10in so i wasnt to far off LOL.i think im going to just start feeding him medium rats instead of 2 small rats.he took the medium rat that i fed him 2 days ago fine so im sure he will take to them well.im curious of why you said to stay away from white lipped pythons(dalberts) are they agressive or hard to take care of or something.
 
in my experience, both personal and what I have seen, whitelip pythons have fairly specific needs and tend not to tolerate variance from them very well (read: if things aren't right, they die). most of the captive bred ones I have encountered tend to be flightly at best, bitey at worst...though that does not mean you cannot get a tame one. IMO, you need to rack up some experience before taking them on.
 
im not planning on getting one any time soon just wondering what they are like.im not planning on getting anything any time soon realy im just looking and doing research on a few things.i might get something in a month or 2 maybe.i found a nice hogg island im thinking about buying though i want a python of some kind but the hogg i seen i just cant get over it LOL.
 
But you already had a Bci, and didn't like it...why get another? And, yes, Hog Island boas ARE Bci...though it seems current thinking is that they are a super hypo blonde strain, as opposed to an insular variation. They are smaller than "normal" Bci; They don't grow as fast, nor should attempts me made to make them (that means you will need to rethink your feeding habits).
