I acquired a skink today and know nothing except that the previous owner thought she was a Solomon Islands. And was feeding her cat food. She might be some kind of Solomon Islands-dwelling skink, but she certainly isn't a monkeytail. She's about eighteen inches long, mostly tail, very smooth, with red eyes and a pink underside. Velvety brown sides and back, with some faint dark crossbanding. The tip of her tail is dark but doesn't look regenerated. She has a black tongue that she actively tastes the air with. Actually, she looks a lot like an alligator lizard and acts a lot like a tegu. She likes to burrow, but when handled goes right up your arm onto your shoulder and seems quite comfortable with handling. And she likes crickets and nightcrawlers. I'll post this description for starters and then start figuring out how to post pictures. For now I have a humid terrarium set up in a 70 gallon tank for her, but I'd hate to find out the hard way that she's a desert species.

I'm thinking maybe Eugongylus albofasciolatus? I saw a few pics that didn't have the white crossbars.. although for all I know THOSE pictures may have been seriously misidentified.
I've already sent away for a book on skinks and a book on reptiles of the Solomon Islands, but meanwhile I'm just sort of watching her and going by what she likes.Which is mostly burying herself and slithering around just under the surface of the terrarium, although she climbs up and basks after waking in the morning and after eating.

The dark crossbands are not actually darker than the base color. They ARE the base color, but look darker because there are so many tiny yellowish speckles on the rest of her back and sides. The tail is solid brown, though, except for the black tip. And the legs and feet are black, with very flattened little feet and long weak-looking toes. She puts her legs against her and slithers through the substrate quite well, but when on the surface she can walk or climb just like any other lizard. Her snout to vent length is between six and seven unches, and her tail is I'd say ten. She has good vision but always tongue-flicks before going for food. In fact, I'm trying to dish-train her now and today I had to put a little bit of cat food in it to get her olfactory attention, but once she was in there she happily polished off a nightcrawler, a superworm, and a giant roach nymph.
