I plan on breeding my bearded dragons this year...really, trying to do it now. I got lots of extra cages, food isn't a worry, and a pet store who wants to buy the babies from me. I know the name of a good reptile vet, and have bred leopard geckos before, so I know what is involved in incubation and stuff.
Anyways...
The male is a year and a half old and I just introduced him into my female's cage. I didn't want to put her in his cage, because I don't want her smell in there, because he seems to be able to relax when I put him back in his cage at night. Well, getting him to do the inseminating part is a pain. When I put him in her cage, he bobs his head, puffs out his beard, and the female waves at him over and over again. (The first time I introduced them, she puffed out her beard and tried to pick a fight with him, going around in circles, trying to bite his tail, but that happened once...probably to test him out...a dominance thing) So, I guess he won, since I heard arm waving is a submissive thing.
Sometimes after he bobs his head and stuff, he runs after her, bites he bottom of her head until he gets her flat on the ground, lays right on top of her, then stops...and sits on her, with his head laying on her neck just to either shut his eyes or keep bobbing. She eventually gets tired and moves away, just for him to bob his head all day, or do the biting every 3 hrs or so. The female is a bit larger, so she should be fine.
Do virgin males usually do this at first? Has any breeders had this problem before? What can I do to get them to mate?
