In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

What the heck happened to this guy?

I just found this hatchling tonight. He has much more body mass than any of his siblings (that have hatched so far) and he's all lumpy and contorted. If I try straightening him out at all, he starts flipping around like an earthworm that's been cut in half. The other babies that have come out so far seem healthy, but I'm at a loss for what this is. I'm half wondering if he ate a sibling, because of his size and lumpiness (if that's a word).

Has anyone had a corn come out like this before?
What do you think I should do?

I'd fully expect to see a regurgitated snake in the next 24-48 hours.

As of 1/2 hour ago he's still alive, and apparently capable of moving around the tank just fine on his own. He's nowhere near as jumpy and flippy as he was last night. I'm thinking that IF he did indeed eat a sibling, that it was still alive and thrashing around, thus causing the peculiar motions last night.

Both of the parents were candycanes from Roylance, and I guess are het for motley, as one of the babies is a candycane motley (which I REALLY like). Allz I know, is that if he ate his sibling, it had better NOT have been a motley! lol PIG. I won't be able to tell until the last few hatch, b'cuz then I'll be able to count eggs vs. babies.

If he dies before regurgitating, I'm not going to be able to resist "finding out" what the heck happened. Whether it's a deformity or cannibalism, it's my first instance of either.

My guess would be deformity. If it ate a sibling I doubt it would be able to be as twisted up as it is. With cannibalism of like sized snakes the one that has done the eating will look like it has a spring inside. If by the odd chance it did eat a smaller sibling it should be bloating up today as the eaten one starts to be digested.

Just for the heck of it (and because I borrowed my brother's kick-butt camera) here's a picture of one of the candycane motley siblings.

(I know the pic isn't THAT good, but with MY camera, you'd be lucky if you can see the deli cup.) lol

Well, he didn't eat a sibling, as I have accounted for all of them.

So I guess this means he's a deformity, and should probably be popped in the freezer. Do you think it's inhumane for me to keep him alive at least long enough to see if he can eat? I want to at least give him a chance, but I'm afraid his prospects are none too good.

Whadaya think? :shrug01:

Feeding it would be futile and a waste of a pinky. I'd freeze it. Got any king snakes? :eatsmiley

Sorry about that little hatchling. I would have really liked to have seen it healthy and grow up...beautiful color and pattern! Maybe another, similar-looking, but healthy, baby will hatch out next year.

Im sorry about this little one... to me this looks clearly like a case of deformity but Im also wondering if it may have been some type of siamese-twin... or some type of duplicated organs or something to that effect to cause the body to be that much larger than the rest... it does almost look like it is two snakes in one -- just minus the extra head and tail...

The last post on this was on the 17th... today is now the 19th and I am assuming you have had to take things into your own hands as far as this little fellas best interest...

you seem to be the analitical type -- If you do indeed decide to take a peek inside this little one, might you give us an update of your findings?

again, I really am sorry for this little guy...

Aww.. that's just too bad, the pattern on him was amazing... I grimly await my first kined hatchling.. a sad part of breeding... :(

Oops, sorry I forgot to reply this! :slamit: It's been one of those weeks (months, actually).

Anyway, I did euthanize this animal but I didn't do too much as far as trying to figure out what exactly was wrong with him. Since he was so light colored, it was pretty easy to see through him in bright light. Basically his spine was all deformed and crooked. One part looked like it actually was broken and didn't connect. I have CLOSELY examined the other babies from the clutch, and I can't find a single kink anywhere, so I'm assuming it was totally random and not necessarily something that would be passed on through the bloodlines.

Here's a question for anyone of y'all though: When selling the siblings to this baby, do you think I should disclose the fact that one from the clutch was deformed? I think I should at least mention it to anyone who's looking for a baby for future breeding...

Ooh. Excellent question. I'd like to hear the advice on this myself.

So Sorry ABout Your Baby!

Honesty is the best policy...

If it is genetic and you sell one of the babies as a breeder, then that person breeds it and ends up with some "swizzle sticks"..you could potentially end up with your name being slammed on the BOI..
Personally I would not take the risk...it is not worth it...just disclose this info to the buyer(s) or sell them only as "pets"
I would think this to be a fluke thing...
Just my opinion...hope this helps

hatchling

i would say it got overheated in incubation and or had fungus attack it the patterns sometimes look different when they get attacked but I dont think that would count for its diformitys

Steve, I had pretty much ruled out both of those possibilities. There were over 100 other eggs in that incubator at the time, and none of the other snakes hatched out like this. I've heard of fungus affecting pattern before, but there wasn't a problem with fungus on the eggs and most of the babies from that clutch have peculiar patterns (so does the mom.) I'm assuming it's just a random freak of nature.
