Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

whats the best way to get rid of mites

I've gotten stuck eye caps off with painter's tape, but I never let them get 2 layers thick! If you don't get them off, the eyes will (if they haven't already) become infected. Since they're a couple of sheds old, you're probably going to have to start with daily soaks of about 30 minutes (change out the water halfway through, unless you have a heat pad that will keep the water warm, without making it hotter). And another vet visit might still be required.

Mites AND stuck eye caps from the same breeder?? Please tell me that you'll never go to him/her again!!

We don't KNOW that it's stuck-on eye caps yet. I have already seen the damage done to a snake by a newbie that thought the snake had "stuck-on" eye caps. (shudder):ack2:

This poster has posted NO pictures, or anything..I wouldn't go in this direction, yet. So far, it appears that the OP is new and has to go though all the OLD remedies before he comes up to speed on health and care of these boids.

Some members have given him great advice, and he's taking advice that could have the snake suffering longer?? No, I wouldn't be worrying about the breeder of the snake at this point.

Great points, Deb! It really didn't hit me, until I read Deb's post, but if you took the snake to the vet 3 weeks ago, didn't your vet say anything about stuck eye caps? If they are 2 layers thick, the vet should have easily noticed that, immediately upon looking at him. I didn't go into detail on how I've removed eye caps, mainly because (IF they are indeed eye caps) trying to pull off layers could easily hurt the animal.

If you're truly concerned that there are problems with it's health, but you're not positive of what they are, another vet visit is the best advice that I can offer. Just make sure that you've got a good vet that specializes in reptiles.

its stuck eye caps. its 1 layer this time he went to my herp vet for it the first time 3 days after being recieved and he pulled 2 layers off then.

that is him. Let me clarify a little here i got the snake a little over a month ago got him home and noticed he had shed stuck over his eyes. so i would soak him everyday for 20-30 min at a time. then in the evening i would put him in a warm washcloth and keep him in there for about 30min at a time while trying to rub the shed off of his eyes. 1 eye was completely covered while the other was about 40% covered. I tried to get it off for about 4 days then took him to my vet i use for exotics and reptiles. he tried getting it off with warm gause then a qtip then had to get some tweezers with rounded ends. He pulled 2 layers off of each eye. and i guess now he was also covered in mite eggs. his eyes looked like hell but vet said itll be likt that untill he sheds again. well 4-5 days ago he shed again eye caps are stuck there can see on 1 eye where its peeled out a little but not enough i can get ahold of. Ive been soakin him in the warm rag as previously stated. and also puttin him in the bathroom on my sink while i shower so he sits in the warm steam. He was my only snake untill the day i found the mites i brought a female pastel home earlier that day she wasnt kept anywhere near him though. He just came out of a warm soak and i only found 3 dead mites in the water and 4-5 dead mites in his water bowl. his Terrarium is currently wrapped in plastic out on my patio and has a pest control product in it for fumigation the Produdt is called a Nuvon Strip. The snake is currently away from all other reptiles and sittin on my computer dsk in a clear plastic tub with paper towels in the bottom.

I do appreciate all coments from everyone good and bad its the only way to learn. As i previously told everyone im kind of new to the whole snake thing have owned lots of reptiles and exotics in the past but never had any snakes really. had 3 corns for a while i had to sell.

That looks like more than just one layer of stuck eye caps, that doesn't look good at all. One layer would shed off with the next shed but I don't know about eye's like that.

this is his first shed since coming home from the vet the last time. its 1 layer both eyes are completly covered and the shed has turned white now. He shedded good except for his eyes wasnt all in 1 piece but no shed stuck elsewhere. shed was in 4 or 5 pieces

im just aggrivated about the whole thing there is no reason for something like this to come from someone that is supposely a higher end ball breeder. Im not sure who the breeder is just the city he is located in. my buddy that got the snake in got a bumblebee and a pinstripe along with this spider and they are infested with mites also. It cost me $50 at the vet the last time now its probably gonna have to go in again if i cant get it off 1 eye the shed is peeled a little so i might be able to soak his eyes and get ahold of it with some tweesers. Im just not real comfortable messing with it because its an eye anywhere else would be no big deal. Them im pissed off about there damn mites. Hes a great looking spider so i dont want nothin to happen to him. its just driving me crazy that he came like this from a breeder.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a high end breeder otherwise it wouldn't have came to you in such bad shape. You need to ask your friend who the breeder is and start a thread on them in the BOI section, unless it was your buddy's fault they got that way.

i got it the day it came in. i was there 20 min after the breeder came into the store. Im not sure what all the breeder has. I know he is breeding and selling pied balls, bumblebees, pinstripes, fires, spiders, normals, pastels, and albino redtails. The only thing i know about the breeder is some of his product and that hes located in Daytona Fl. Its a beautiful spider dont get me wrong about that. But if u have issues with ur stock take care of ur problems instead of passin it on to others. Makes u look bad and makes whoever is selling ur animals look bad. That might be the reason the Local exotic store quit dealing with him im gonna find out this week. My buddy told me that this guy use to deal with the only local exotic shop in the area and now they dont carry his animals. I breed and sell frogs and use to breed and sell geckos also. But if i know there is a problem with somethin it dont leave untill its helthy or wont leave at all.

I have 1 other question ive heard that the mite issue could be why his eyse are shedding the skin off properly is this true?

It could be ONE of the reasons. Another reason could be the humidity range in his home.

You said, the Vet took off two layers? If the Vet took off two layers, and the snake is having the same problem...I would be looking at the environment.

The snake COULD be preparing to shed, and the dented eyecap is a sign of low humidity. It's difficult to tell.

Vet took off 2 layers of shed 3 days after i got him came to me from the breeder that way. This is his first shed since i got him. Humidity in the house is somewhat high like stated got lots of enclosures with water and lots of live plants in the room. Shed pretty good wasnt 1 piece but wasnt stuck anywhere but his eyes. u can see where the shed is somewhat peeled off close to the 1 eye. his humidity is probably just as high as my frog enclosures he is located just outside my bathroom door.

you could also go to walmart and get a can of equate bedding spray. it's an aerosol can, but I'm not sure if it's sold separately anymore. you may have to buy the 3 pc kit and just use the aerosol can from it. clean the enclosure well first... spray it lightly... give it about 5 minutes, then add your substrate... and do the same for it. leave it for about 5 minutes and then add the snake to the enclosure. DO NOT SPRAY IT DIRECTLY ON THE SNAKE. I've only had mites confirmed on one snake on a single instance a long time back and it solved the problem before my PAM arrived. I got this information from BHB as this is what they used.

if you end up getting a 3pc kit, you'll always have the comb and liquid solution if someone in your family ever gets lice. :)

ive read that you should not spray the PAM on the snake. Is it only used to treat the terrarium? The terrarium is actually being fumigated right now with NUVON STRIPS. ive heard that a lot of reptile places use them to cure mites and other problem bugs. ppl and mammals CAN NOT breathe the fumes given off by the nuvon strips for more then a couple hours at a time or it can cause them harm. will kill any kind of insect in the area being fumigated. I am goin to be sprayin the snake itself with some Natural Chemistry Reptile relief spray lat this evening. its suppose to kill mites. anyone heard of or tried this product? i seen it recommended to buy it when u buy PAM on reptile sites that sell the PAM

that sounds a little bit risky if you ask me, but its your animal... not mine. and correct, you should not spray PAM directly on the snake... only the enclosure and substrate/bedding. same goes for the equate bedding spray that I spoke of.

the Nuvon strips are suppose to be safe for reptiles. You are suppose to be able to put them right in the enclosure with the animal. Hes not in the terrarium hes in a sterilite clear tub for the next 3-4 weeks. gonna fumigate terrarium for a week air it out for a week them bleach the tank out. all the bedding will go in the trash when its done outside gonna bake the piece of wood and im boiling the stone water bowl now so it can go in his quarantine tank.

its not a spray or liquid. Its like a little rubber strip u hang in the terrarium will kill any and all bugs and insects in the tank. leaves no film or residue and is completly human safe once aired out. Its used a lot by ppl that treat for bedbugs u put ur stuff in it when done doing treatment so not to take the bedbugs home.
