    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

White mice genetics?

I decided to try breeding a small mouse colony. I have four females that are white, one brown & white male, and one black & white male. I'm wondering what colors of babies we will have. Is the white dominant or the color? Maybe a mix of both?

Well, from what I have witnessed on past breedings you will more than likely get a mixture of both colored and pure white mice. It's really hard to tell without knowing what animals produced those. :thumbsup:
 
So far I've had three litters from three different females. Mom's were all white mice and Dad was a white and brown. The first litter was eaten by the Mom... there one night gone the next morning. The second litter I watched a little closer. They were sort of strung out in the tub and the mom started to attack them so I took them out... froze all but one of them. The one that I had left I gave to the 3rd Mom and she fostered him with her litter. The 3rd Mom turned out to be a good one and raised all of them until they were the right size.

The one I saved from the second litter turned out white. The 3rd litter were all solid browns with one that was black.

I've got two that are pregnant now but I had to get a new male. The first male decided to start chewing on the females so I got rid of him via Snoopy. :)
 
I's suggest not watching the new litters too closely: it may be why they ate the first litters (or it may have been just a first time mum thing). But basically, leave them dark and quiet for the first few days and you should get more survivors.

Best breeding ration is a triangle: one male and 2 females per cage.
 
I've experimented raising many colors (even integrated wild mice into some projects) and in all of my experience, white mice (albino) is a simple recessive. I bred an albino male to a wild female (agouti) and all babies were agouti. I had the same experience when I crossed my brindle line into my albinos. If you get albino babies from an albino to a colored mouse, the colored mouse is a carrier for the gene :)
 
I breed alot of mice, and I've found on well more than one occasion, that even white mice(not albino) will produce multicolors too. I keep approximately 300 breeding mice, so I don't keep a close eye on who's doing who anymore though.
