Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I was just wondering why do you breed your leopard gecko's?

There might be a lot of different reasons for this, i thought it might be interesting to hear what other people think.

So fun!

I just love these guys, really I love all animals and we almost always end up breeding all of our animals. Dogs, cats (cats were an accident), hamsters (ditto), Guinea pigs, snails (don't ask), etc... Now I will have geckos! I think its gonna be really fun to have little babies and hand them out. They make some people so happy! :) :) :)

Good question! It's one I always tell people to ask themselves before they commit to bringing living creatures into the world. I think alot of people just do cause they can without much thought as to why they are doing it, and, what happens when they do it.

Reminds me of Jeff Goldblums character in Jurasic Park, not am exact quote but his charcters says something to the effect of " Your scientests were so preoccupied with if they COULD, they didn't stop to think if they SHOULD!"

I know for me its a combination off all the things you have in your poll to varying degrees.

Do I want to make money? Yeah sure I do, I would be crazy not to want to make a few extra dollars, specially with a 20 month old son who goes through diapers like a demon. I don't expect to get rich or anything, but a hobby that pays for itself would be just fine.

Fun, I expect it will be fun for me at some point, and really, whats the point of doing it if its not going to be fun? I'm not having much fun with the breeding aspect right now due to various issues that have all resulted in MOST of my eggs dying, mark it up to first year gremlins, both with me and my breeders. But even with that its fun to have all these animals and have people visit to see them.

A new morph would be amazing, though I think for me its going to be about producing some of the best examples I can of existing morphs. If something new and unexpected pops up all the better.

One thing NOT on your poll is the anticipation of seeing what will hatch out, its like opening a gift where you THINK you know what you are getting but the color and style is a mystery, I think thats one of the most exciting aspects there is about gecko breeding!!

Again, excellent question!

I have been thinking about this for a while, I probably want to sell some gecko's, and yes it is fun, and very exciting.

My biggest problem is that I know I will have a hard time selling these babies. So I guess i will have to start working on a new rack soon.

Your quote from Jurassic park is very true Cory. Makes you think a bit.

thanks for the replies.

I just love my daughter's female and thought I would try breeding. As an excuse to get some geckos of my own, and because the babies would pay for upkeep on the geckos and my tarantulas. If I get lucky on some nice babies I might even make enough to buy a few new ones! But mostly it was an excuse to get some geckos of my own :hehe:

Started breeding purely for fun.. who doesn't love the little guys? After I got the bearded dragons I was ordering 1000 crickets a week... it was about then that I decided to breed as well to attempt to recover SOME of my losses. I would be extremely happy if I broke even for the year, but with new cages that's not this year LOL. That's OK, the little guys are worth it.

So basically: I breed them because I like them, they're interesting little creatures, and I sell some to help cover the costs of taking care of the rest.

I had a hard time choosing...it's a little bit of everything for me.

Sure, I'd love to have a little money to support my gecko habit.

These guys are a blast, and their cute little faces always make me smile.

It's a neat way to get a couple more geckos....you can bet I'll be keeping baby #1!!

I'm also doing it for the challenge. I want to make tang patternless, and see if I can make more smiley face geckos like Gilean. The pattern on Gilean's head is really what started it all - it would be so cool to reproduce that pattern.

Excellent question Paul! Honestly leos are just too fun to pass up! Their smiles never get old and it always puts a smile on my face like Shanti said. I think what first made me interested in them was the variety of colors and patterns. Leos are probably the most diverse species in that area.

I started breeding superworms, for my dragon because she loves them and to see if i could do it, quite a bit of fun aswell. Then i started selling them, now they pay for the gecko food bill aswell as any new babies i need to get. Or just about, but it surely does help.

I think very few people really can make money by breeding gecko's. Most of us just support ourselves to upgrade the gecko mansions we already have!

I needed an all of the above choice! :)
They are so much fun to have around and producing babies makes it even better! Hopefully, someday, I'll at least be able to break even, but that is certainly a long way off!!!

I have an unique reason.
I have severe Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Nerve paralysis in both hands/arms.....or so they think....It came from working in the military as a linguist day in and out on computers....or so they think( I am not happy with the Drs lately and their I am not sure diagnosis)....5 years later and I am still on constant pain meds and unable to work a "real job" due to flare ups that leave me in a corner sobbing and side effects from the pain meds...
I used to garden and paint as a hobby...and read romance novels. I can't do any of those things anymore. It hurts to hold books open, I shake to bad to hold a paint brush, and forget gardening. The hobby of keeping and caring for Leos involves so many diverse movements that I can physically do it which keeps my mood up and keeps me occupied. On bad hand days it may take me a bit longer but it gets done. And I happen to love working with them. I am hoping to make a great name for us at LGI and would love for it to become a "Real" job. For now, I am just so happy to have found a hobby that I can do and love doing....
And their smiling little faces help lighten the pain on bad days....I mean who can stay in a bad mood when a Blizzard takes a pop shot at you?

You know to make money at something you love to do is a valuable thing few people in this world have. I hope some day to just make enough to cover my food bill LOL! And to get more geckos of course could there be any other reason?

I started collecting orchids in the 70s and breeding them soon after; "...if this striped one was crossed with this spotted one will it make stripes with spots ?" Ten years later came my first gecko and the prospect of seeing offspring one year after breeding instead of five years for a seedling orchid's first bloom. Being the first person to see a new design, pattern, color that isn't exactly like any other is the lure for me.

I decided to breed my geckos for a number of reasons. One, I fell absolutely head-over-heels in love with the Bell albinos. They are just so beautiful! So I bought a handsome male from Kelli and bred him to my grandma gecko, who had been laying duds for no apparent reason (she had never been with a male). Since my grandma gecko has such sentimental value to me, I knew that having babies from her would make me very happy so I paired them up and it went from there! I also love being involved in the hobby and meeting all of the wonderful people that are just as crazy as I am. As we can all see from Kelli's tragic situation, this community is VERY supportive, even if we only know each other through a computer, phone conversations, and shows. I have made so many awesome friends here at Fauna and it is what keeps me involved. I may put some of my babies up for sale, but only to offset the cost of feeders and offer my gecko-friends some great bloodlines. I doubt I will ever break-even, but I could care less! ;)

Fame, Glory, Ooodles of cash, and lots of Groupies!!!!

Oh wait... that was my Rock Star fantasy.

I guess cause they are cool. LOL

it is more about the curiosity, i want to see what happens and what the babies look like. plus i love my geckos and want more
