    =====================

    I am still waiting on my developer to finish up on the Classifieds Control Panel so I can use it to encourage members into becoming paying members. Google Adsense has become a real burden on the viewing of this site, but honestly it is the ONLY source of income now that keeps it afloat. I tried offering disabling the ads being viewed by paying members, but apparently that is not enough incentive. Quite frankly, Google Adsense has dropped down to where it barely brings in enough daily to match even a single paid member per day. But it still gets the bills paid. But at what cost?

    So even without the classifieds control panel being complete, I believe I am going to have to disable those Google ads completely and likely disable some options here that have been free since going to the new platform. Like classified ad bumping, member name changes, and anything else I can use to encourage this site to be supported by the members instead of the Google Adsense ads.

    But there is risk involved. I will not pay out of pocket for very long during this last ditch experimental effort. If I find that the membership does not want to support this site with memberships, then I cannot support your being able to post your classified ads here for free. No, I am not intending to start charging for your posting ads here. I will just shut the site down and that will be it. I will be done with FaunaClassifieds. I certainly don't need this, and can live the rest of my life just fine without it. If I see that no one else really wants it to survive neither, then so be it. It goes away and you all can just go elsewhere to advertise your animals and merchandise.

    Not sure when this will take place, and I don't intend to give any further warning concerning the disabling of the Google Adsense. Just as there probably won't be any warning if I decide to close down this site. You will just come here and there will be some sort of message that the site is gone, and you have a nice day.

    I have been trying to make a go of this site for a very long time. And quite frankly, I am just tired of trying. I had hoped that enough people would be willing to help me help you all have a free outlet to offer your stuff for sale. But every year I see less and less people coming to this site, much less supporting it financially. That is fine. I tried. I retired the SerpenCo business about 14 years ago, so retiring out of this business completely is not that big if a step for me, nor will it be especially painful to do. When I was in Thailand, I did not check in here for three weeks. I didn't miss it even a little bit. So if you all want it to remain, it will be in your hands. I really don't care either way.

    =====================
    Some people have indicated that finding the method to contribute is rather difficult. And I have to admit, that it is not all that obvious. So to help, here is a thread to help as a quide. How to become a contributing member of FaunaClassifieds.

    And for the record, I will be shutting down the Google Adsense ads on January 1, 2025.

There is a local petstore by my work that specializes in reptiles. I was there today getting some feeders and a guy walks in with his girlfriend and their baby. He is looking around, asking about some of the snakes.
He wants a "big one".
The employee asked why and he thought it would be cool to have a 10 foot snake. When asked what experience he had, he replied "none, I've never had a snake".
The employee proceeded to refuse to sell any snakes with the exception of a garter, a corn, or a kingsnake. They would not sell him ANY of the larger constrictors (not even the large $600 albino burm which he was ready to put on the CC).
Needless to say he left empty handed and will probably go somewhere else and get a burm but I was impressed that they let him walk without making a sale.
After they left, I was talking to the employee and we both agreed that no one should sell large constrictors to inexperienced people who have no idea what they are getting into.
Man, I wish more petstores were this way.

That's really neat! It's good to hear about a moral pet store once in a while, that actually cares about their animals and treats and respects them as animals and not $$$Cash Crops$$$.

We have one reptile store like that here... wish there were more.

Wow

That is really good to hear, something that rarely happens in our industry today....Thanx for sharing the story with us.

the petshop i work at will not sell large reptiles to inexpereinced people . we had a guy in the store today that wanted to buy a blood python for his 7 year old son . i wouldnt sell it to him and instead directed him to some corns or king snakes . he left without buying anything because he wants a "big snake" even though he admitted he had never had any snakes before . we have the largest reptile room in the state of virginia and all employees that work in the reptile department must take and pass a test before being hired . of the 12 people working in the reptile department 10 of them are keepers of reptiles themselves . we quarentine all animals that come in until they have fed atleast 4 times and wont sell sick animals at all . not all petshops are just in it to make a fast buck , but there are more than enough of them that are .

The only petstore we go to here in town is like that. The owner WILL NOT sell anything to anyone at any price if they are not experienced enough or if he just doesn't feel right about it. Truly, he is one of the good guys.

Wow, it's nice to hear these stories. It's hard to believe there are stores out there like that. If there were some like that around here I would be more willing to "support" them, by buying more stuff.

Wow, that was a very respectful decisionl, too bad I cannot say the same about a certain pet store around here.

There was a herp shop not too far from here that USED to be the same way.....unfortunately greed seems to have taken over. A shame, really.

Great Story...

We have two Reptile Specialty Stores here in Austin and both would have sold a pair of Burms and one store wouldn't even charge for the mites! :hot:

Its nice when you find good stores with good workers in them! We have a small family owned shop here that stopped selling any snakes other than corns, balls and kings because people got mad when he refused to sell to them and would tell all of their friends no to go there.

We have several other petstores around here that deal with snakes and mites, dehydration, and internal parasites come free of charge with any purchase. :hot:

They would sell an adult WC retic to a kid if he had the cash.

its really nice to see that so many of youare looking out for the snake as well as the buyers. no one should be allowed to buy the large ones without being screened!! nothing is worse than hearing about peoples wants harming an animals reputation.

Mary, welcome to Fauna, this is a place that cares about the reptile's lives before money. Your comments were very kind and generous, thanks.

yes, it is nice here. not perfect, but most people are fairly reasonable and willing to help.
I am glad to hear that. The only local store that even sells large snakes is the one that doesn't allow people to buy them without previous expereince. It is nice to see more store being ethical, or at least covering their butts to not get sued by the dumb people who want "big snakes or herps". It just bugs me that some people seem to treat snakes like cars, something totally replaceable and an attempt to cover up gaping insecurities by being able to handle a manly dangerous object without thinking of the cost, time or reality of the situation. :eatsmiley: *snarl*
