CHRIS, If you read my post, its an opinion
Jeff,
I can understand your concerns about certain people owning Venomous Reptiles, and your concerns about shipping them. I am not currently a Corp. yet. I have applied for a business license, and have yet to finish making things legit. However, I have been selling reptiles for many years as a individual. I have recently begun to sell venomous where as before it was mostly Boids and Varanus. I do comply with all the laws in regards to selling Venomous reptiles. I have lists of all the States and thier laws in regards to owning Venomous reptiles, and I will not sell to anyone who is not legal to keep them. In fact I have called the proper departments on more than one occation to check documents which seemed to be doctored. I do not wish to break any laws or contribute to any accidents that may be caused by careless people.
As far as the requirements of New York State to own Venomous Reptiles, it is a very easy application to fill out and get approved, however they do spring up on you from time to time. Mostly to make sure you are keeping the animals in the way in which was explained on your application. I had devoted the better part of a year building a room with completely sealed floors and walls with double glass slidding doors and security devices to assure the proper protection of the public and myself and family from my animals. I keep all handling equipment hung on hooks within reach, and all phone numbers to all the neccessary emergency transport facilities in case of a mishap.
I have been an avid collector of various species of snakes and lizards for over 20 years now. I have studied, raised, and successfully bred many of the species I have kept through the years. I am not really in this hobby for the money, but so that whatever I may sell from my own breedings I can put back into my own collection. I usually do not post on any forum for the reasons of being flamed for my answers to questions that are asked. Everyone has their own opinions, and their own techniques on working with their reptiles. I am always in the market for new ideas and ways to be a better keeper and breeder. I try to listen, and not think I know it all. I am what you call a quiet keeper. Many people in New York who know me know what I keep and what I have kept. I do have a 9-5 job, but my true passion is my reptiles. I try to provide for them as I would my own son. Its my responsibility to provide the best possible environment I can.
I hope this answers any questions you had asked.
Thanks,
Chris Santamarina
