In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

I recently made a purchase from Chris Van Aken ( www.chrisvanaken.com ) and have been VERY disappointed with the entire thing. He claims to be a Uroplatus breeder but i highly doubt that.

Chris Van Aken has/had a FS on Pangea Forums for 1.1 proven CB Uroplatus Fimbriatus $560 + shipping. Upon contacting Chris and buying these he also offered up another 1.1 pair of CB Uroplatus Fimbriatus and 1.1 CB Uroplatus Ebenaui which we made a deal on for $650 for the 4. Soon after that he decided to sell a 1.1 CB Uroplatus Henkeli for $450 which i also purchased. when exchanging emails i did ask if these were WC by any chance because i knew a import shipment had just come in and he told me that NO they were not WC.

i ended up being out of town for a few extra days so had Chris Van Aken delay the shipment until i could be there for arrival which he did. in the meantime he pulled the second 1.1 pair of CB Uroplatus Fimbriatus because the female looked in poor shape and made him "nervous" then he refunded me $325 out of the $650 (the Fimbriatus are worth more than the Ebenaui) for the Fimbriatus/Ebenaui combo.

when they arrived on 4/4/2012 we opened the package and it was shipped with no heat pack. packing was good but the box was COLD. We (me and the GF) inspected the animals and found mites on the 1.1 CB Uroplatus Ebenaui and the 1.1 CB Uroplatus Henkeli. I immediately took pictures and emailed them over and his response was "Well crap, I'm going to look through my collection to make sure all my things aren't infested. I didnt even look for them since they are healthy. That would be horrible. Keep me posted on how they do. Do you know how to treat them? If not, I can help. Thanks!" -- yeah, seriously --

at this point in time i suspected i have been taken and got WC instead of CB like i ordered and paid for. i could have bought these WC for $600 shipped and been as happy as a clam because with WC it's a gamble, risk, etc. and they can have mites on arrival at the least + many other parasites. I bought CB to avoid these issues......

4/11/2012 I finally get around to emailing Chris Van Aken to let him know what I thought of what I got in, etc. and that he needs to make this right. He emails me back stating he will give a response soon. -- It took me a while to simmer down enough to write a decent email as this issue REALLY IRRITATES ME... still.

4/12/2012 The female Henkeli went from doing fine to dead within a few hours. Again I dispatch a email to Chris Van Aken and he is "very sorry" and offers to send me another female Uroplatus Henkeli. Instead of a replacement he refunds me $225 through paypal which just cleared today.

Through emails i have explained this situation quite clearly and have asked him to make this situation right but the closest thing he has done toward making anything right is sending a refund for the dead female Henkeli.

I do have pictures and every email we sent back and forth. At one point I did attempt to call his # but there was no answer (before there were issues) and I didn't try to keep calling until i got an answer.

I would suggest that ANYONE dealing with Chris Van Aken take a good hard look and evaluate their purchases. He does a really good job photoshopping the specimens he is selling to make them look more attractive so don't go by the photos he sends.

other issues i listed to Chris about this transaction were:

1) did you ship with a heat pack -- NO
2) did you ship me 4 uroplatus with mites - YES
3) do i have pics of said mites -- YES
4) did you ever offer to make things right in regards to mite infestation -- NO
5) do i honestly believe i bought all CB uroplatus -- NO
6) did a female, mite infested, henkeli die within a very short amount of time after arrival -- YES
7) did you offer to send a replacement female henkeli -- YES (but i digress i got a refund instead)

That really sucks! It is my biggest pet-peeve about the hobby when people mislabel WC as CB! I bought some "CB" ebenaui that had parasites and died. Still angers me when I think about it. I'm not sure a heat pack would have been a good idea with the ebenaui as it might have gotten too warm inside the box for them but I don't know what your temps were. Other than that everything else sounds like a disaster! With Uroplatus I guess you have to really know and trust the person so you don't get scammed. What is it about Uroplatus being mislabeled as CB so often?! I saw an ad for "CB" U. phantasticus on another classifieds site that were supposedly bred in Europe and then imported to the US. I found out later from a well-known breeder in madagascar that they are most likely WC that are laundered in Thailand before being shipped to the USA. The price for these CB was cheaper than WC phants! I'm so sick of fake "farmed" animals and fake "CB" animals! Anyways, I'm really sorry to hear about what happened to you. I hope things get worked out between you and Chris.

It did and still does suck about the C.V.A. deal but live and learn + do your research and do it well. I should have contacted other people about this "breeder" before purchasing but the little research I did do (Fauna BOI) there was nothing in regards to C.V.A. other than a chameleon deal from quite a while back.

If I would have listened to my gut I would have cancelled the order after he pulled the 1.1 fimbriatus from the order as it sent up a red flag in the brain but I ignored it. At this point in time I think there is no more resolution to this issue other than what has been done already as the only resolution i can come up with is a full refund (and i'll ship back at my expense) or just call it a day and lesson learned as i doubt i'd get refunded the difference in cost between CB and WC or any compensation for getting animals with mites or other non CB parasites.

Sorry to hear about this I would of been beyond pissed if it was me.
Well... beyond pissed is exactly what I was (still not happy) and it's the reason I took so long to respond to him about this. So mad I couldn't type out a email without wanting to wring his neck through the computer!

As for legal recourse... no way to prove they are not CB... could be horrible husbandry, so trying to take him to court over it would be expensive and not worth it in the long run. I could have someone Knock on his door but that wouldn't get me anywhere either.

The way I see it I overpaid by around $600 at this point and it is a hard pill to swallow but not really any recourse available other than getting the word out about his sales practices so nobody else is swindled.

I almost ordered a pair of them yesterday! I thought that was a great price for CB but clearly there is a reason. :( I'm sorry! You did save me though! Thank you! I would have been FURIOUS if animals I was so excited about and paid so much for showed up in that condition and with mites. I don't blame you for a refund considering the state of the animals, I wouldn't want a replacement either. Once again, I seriously thank you. I just decided to look him up before I ordered and I am seriously happy I did.

I think that anytime a deal to good to be true from someone you've never dealt with before should always be passed up, remember you always get what you pay for.

My 1.3 sikorae from him were all sent in the same container that was around a gallon. They had a shriveled up paper towel to keep them comfortable, and the container so large that the box was bulging. I replied on the other thread, but my warnings went unheeded.

honestly the search feature on the BOI isn't that great and when searching for "Chris Van Aken" it usually just searches for "Chris" and there are hundreds of random threads/posts with "chris" in them. wasn't until after i made the purchase i found the www.pygmychameleon.com thread http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1443590#post1443590

Sorry to hear this happened to you. Obviously looking at the pics they have been malnurished and emanciated for quite sometime. Or in other words on their death bed for quite sometime. I almost bought some xenagama taylori he was selling until he sent me some pics of them. They did not look pleasing at all. Needless to say I did not buy any. I do hope something works out for you in your favor.
