If you can post the entire email including the header information(which would show every single email address/ip address it was routed to and from it would prove where it actually came from, paypal or otherwise.

But even if it did come from paypal it's obvious they didn't say anything like what Thomas was claiming. They were not demanding that you send him the funds to ship her back and stating that it was required to complete this dispute. That email very clearly stated that all expenses were his responsibility, but that you could provide the cost of shipping if you felt like it.

Pretty clear that he doesn't provide any direct contact to his vet, this lawyer he's supposedly using, paypal or his cc company because obviously they aren't saying any of the things he's claiming they are. And giving you actual access to speak to any of them would disprove everything he claims.

I have received spoof emails from what looked like a legitimate paypal email address before but which I knew were fake because they went to my work email, which never deals with Paypal. I'd also call Paypal to confirm the authenticity of that email.

Yeah, looks like it did come from paypal, which isn't surprising. Especially since the actual email itself was enough to prove that paypal wasn't saying what Thomas was claiming. So either way, you have no responsibility to pay shipping costs and until he can provide you with a solid answer as to her current condition I don't think there is any obligation at all for you to accept her back.

You've already laid out very reasonable(beyond what most would do actually) offers on what he can do to end this and he isn't willing to cooperate and provide any real information beyond his own words, which obviously cannot be trusted. Until he's ready to provide real proof he's the one holding everything up in this process and dragging it out. If he really wanted it done and over with it could be in one simple response.

I'd be careful with this. I'm not sure the hobby needs more bad press. I don't trust those snakes in this guy's care but I'd worry that going through the effort to make a big deal of this to outside people won't do the animals any good. Especially in Texas where ball pythons have been banned recently in one county. It'd just be out of spite rather than helpful for the animals. I don't know, maybe I'm totally off base, but I worry.

I think Thomas has been shown to change his facts from day to day, and I worry about the critters in his care. I do not think letting others in his life know what is going on is 'just for spite', on the contrary, I think it may end up helping all of his animals.
Too, with advanced education many times come positions of responsibility, and not letting anyone know what has happened here may be is disservice to others in the future, and not just critters.

I understand how you feel about bad press. But in groups like horseracing and bicycle racing, which have come under fire recently, it is the years of secrecy surrounding the misdeeds that seems to have come under the most fire.

It is my opinion that if the reptile community stands together and shows outrage as a group against reptile keepers who do something particularly egregious, the world looking on will see that outrage and know that we are not going to just put the hush on those around us in our community who have done something we find abhorrent.

Good points, I guess I wasn't really thinking of it in those terms. If the community itself is the one to report on and call out the bad husbandry and disingenuous practices it probably gives a better impression of the community.

As for the advanced education, I've got a feeling that he may discover the hard way that one has to be careful these days about how they present themselves online. In academia you are constantly opening yourself up to the scrutiny and judgment of your peers in the field, especially while going for your PhD. You don't want your name attached to this kind of stuff (which is probably where all the threats of lawsuits came in).

Well, Yellow made it back today. I was expecting her tomorrow, but she's okay. In all fairness, Thomas did a nice job with boxing and shipping her. I let her settle in for a few hours, then took a video that is posted here (click me). It's a bit boring, but Spielberg I ain't.
