with doing further research and talking with people who havent gotten involved here, i have learned that it wasnt IBD that killed Layla. But now I have to prove it on a veterinary level. But what are you going to do to me after that? Pick me apart for it taking too long? For my husbandry? For selling animals? For breathing?

If people paid attention to the science end of all this, they would know that my snakes are not a danger. But you think you're all too high and mighty to be wrong, so you make up stories that people believe.

Mindy, i posted in this thread and just messaged you on Facebook an AAZV document indicating IBD can lay dormant for up to 4-5 years. 18 months is certainly well within that dormancy period.

It's clear, Mindy, that you don't understand IBD. That's actually okay. I doubt many people reading truly have a profound grasp of everything related to this disease; I know I don't. The problem here has long been your attitude towards reasonable concern that IF you had a snake die from IBD and did not quarantine correctly then your whole collection (and any other collections you have been in direct contact with) are at risk. When people have attempted to share their knowledge on the subject, you have insisted you know better. That's unproductive.

You're young and passionate but do you really not see how your responses have led to the point you are at now? If you had owned up to your lack of knowledge at the very beginning, this thread would have died pages ago and everyone would have had a satisfactory outcome. Instead, you have insisted that you are right, that your collection is not at risk, while stating things as facts that can be proven untrue (see above quotes about dormancy of IBD as a prime example).

I have been following this from the beginning and I do applaud you for finally deciding to halt snake sales and get the tests done. People are not continuing to discuss this issue because they have a burning need to drive your business into the ground; they're doing it because you swore blind that the tests were done months ago, that everything was fine, and that Andy would share the results with anyone who called. Now you admit no tests were done. Can you really not see why people are disinclined to believe you?

I hope the tests come back clear, you share the results publicly, and we can all put this in the past as a lesson hard learned. In the meantime, I strongly recommend you step away from online forums until the results are in your hands.

Mindy, are you aware that many viruses lay dormant until activated by stress or illness (thus a drop in the immune response)? For example, Paramyxovirus is known to lay dormant for an unknown amount of time and can become activated simply by the stress involved in shipping or getting too cold.

In humans, most strains of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) lie dormant with zero symptoms or signs of infection for many years until a sudden drop in the immune system triggers it -- pregnancy for example. Many pregnant women suddenly develop genital warts out of nowhere, because they had a latent HPV infection. After delivery, the warts go away and they never see them again unless they get pregnant again. Or they suddenly develop cervical cancer. Same with men -- up to 80% of men carry HPV with no symptoms at all...until they come down with influenza or another major immune system depression then suddenly they blow up.

Ever heard of shingles? Shingles is caused by the same herpes virus that causes chickenpox. After you've had chickenpox, the virus goes dormant in your body, usually hiding on a random nerve cluster somewhere like your back or your chest. Then when you head into your 50's or 60's and your immune system weakens, the virus can suddenly reactivate and you end up with another case of chickenpox...only this one is clustered in one area and 5000x worse. Ever heard of Typhoid Mary? Google her. Great example of a dormant carrier wreaking havoc and being selfish and in denial.

The point is that many viruses lie dormant and can have a carrier state. In reptiles, we know that IBD has a dormant carrier state in boas and research is beginning to find examples in pythons as well. Rare, but does exist. Paramyxovirus also has a dormant carrier state as previously mentioned and so does BPNV, although that one is still in research infancy. In Australia, quarantine for new purchases is a minimum of 18 months to 2 years, because the Sunshine Virus (a strain of Paramyxovirus) is rampant and has shown to have a carrier state up to 18 months so far. The bottom line is that research for viruses in veterinary medicine is limited -- research for REPTILE viruses is even more limited. There is still much we don't know about transmission, carriers, etc. So when it comes to potential infection and possible spread, you can't take chances or play guessing games. Even if it wasn't IBD, it could have been something else. You take a chance and end up being wrong, someone else loses their entire collection and everything they loved and worked for...or multiple people do.

This is what we've been telling you from day one. Do you really want that on your conscience?

Whether you like it or not, my snakes are all HEALTHY. So, you are a vet and lab technician now? someone would have had a problem by now if they weren't. anybody reading this should check out the first page where peole who have ACTUALLY BEEN HERE or actually SEEN my snakes in person gave their reviews, before you people from like california came in and gave your blind reviews based on what you were told. i admitted my fault a dozen times in this thread. i admit i was an idiot for making those assumptions and thinking i was being helpful by sharing my experience without using conclusive evidence that it was true. Mindy, I consider myself a newbie when it comes to hero keeping, and especially illnesses. I apologize for coming off as attacking or snide, but you need to understand where we are coming from. Does Jen's story mean nothing? Her pain, agony and loss of her animals, because of an illness? Do you not see we are all terrified of that happening? I'm currently saving up to get back in to reptiles and I will not purchase until I have everything they need plus emergency money. It's part of responsible snake keeping. I don't think you are grasping the "dormant" part of IBD (which can be hidden/no symptoms for 4 years I believe). So let me try to help you by telling you a fictitious story. Once again completely false, untrue, and made up....

Once upon a time I was in West Africa with my Nigerian friend Nick looking for uromastyx's. We never found any, sadly. However we came upon a small hut where this sweet African family fed us a delicious meal of roast bat. Not my cup of tea but out of respect I ate it. About a week later, when I'm hone in California, Nick calls and says Ebola has broke out, he has a high fever and I should get checked. Well I don't have health insurance and Ebola tests run a few Grand. I post on Facebook, where all my friends know I just came back from Africa, "I think I have Ebola, I'm so scared!" I don't say anything on a bakery web site that I'm selling my awesome cake creations on, and one of my "friends" blast screen shots of what I posted. No I'm being questioned and criticized by my fellow cake makers to get tested and stop selling cakes if I'm sick! My only response is, "I'm not sick, I look fine, it's been 3 weeks!" Weeeeeeeeell it's now been 22 days, a day after the does many period is supposed to last, and I have a 104.4 fever. 3 of my clients who had weaker immune systems than me are in the hospital and the 75 people they had contact with are in quarantine. 10 of those are infants. If I had just sucked it up, I could have saved so many... including myself.
