Just a suggestion, but would it be better to conduct any future auctions held to benefit a group or individual through the Staff of the site?
The conductor of such auctions should be a well known reputable member of the site? I believe I would also require the paypal account go directly to the beneficiary(ies).
A behind the scenes Staff forum could then be created to post who donated an item for auction, what they donated, who won the auction, the amount, and whether or not the payment was received by the beneficiary. At least the Admins and staff of the site could moderate such activity. Any private donations could be kept separately.
It would require an (at least monthly) paypal report from the beneficiary to show money received from the auctions, but it would cut out the middle man and leave less likelihood for disasters like this.
Still incensed by this whole ordeal, it makes bile rise up in my throat.
By the way, I "dugg" the topic as well so hopefully it will go viral. The word needs to be spread.

Paying back the monies owed is NOT ENOUGH to pay for what they did to this grieving family. I sincerely hope that someone has contacted the proper authorities--be it local police, FBI or whomever. If I were in a position to do so, I would myself; however, as only winning an auction, I don't think I'm in this "deep enough" to get anything started.
