Hello all,
I have a sulcata that I picked up from someone on craigslist that I have grown quite fond of. It is around 10 inches and probably weighs about 1/4 of what it should at it's age. This is by far the single most pyramided tortoise I have ever seen.
When I responded to the ad on craigslist, I was told by the person that posted the ad that it was just a little guy, as in hatchling, although 10 inches is small. I figured either way we'd need to get him out of his current situation. The person told me that the tortoise was his ex-girlfriend's and it was left by her when they broke up and he had no idea how to take care of it and just wanted it gone asap. This tortoise had no lights at all, and was being fed that high protein pellet stuff with no greens of any kind and no supplements. I said fine I'd take it in that case, knowing that if I thought I was not the best home that I could post it in some adoption classifeds.
One day he said to go pick it up as he HAD LEFT IT ON HIS PORCH!! Now, understand, this is CT in November around 10 at night, and this person had just left to go to Miami and had a friend leave it out there. Needless to say I sped there going about 95 mph.
So I got the tortoise home and he is just awesome. Very active, no signs of an RI, no cloudy eyes, ect. He eats like a champ and is a pleasure to watch. However he makes me want to cry every time I look at him because it's honestly disturbing how this animal was neglected.
He is free to anyone that can provide a better home for him. He's just not the same size as ours as I thought he was originally and it'll be a little tough for us. I don't mind keeping him as things are going well now, but I just want what's absolutely best for him. If there's a better home out there I'd love to give him up. He will not disappoint.
Thank you and I look forward to any replies.
