Hey Rich,
I'm just going to put something out there. Have you considered making this a "review" website where only the original poster and the seller can post to a topic? Much like eBay's buyer/seller feedback system. It's not perfect either, but at least your website wouldn't be made to look like a circus side show.
I didn't want to say it, but you've already acknowledged the fact that most of the bigger names in this hobby do avoid this website. They avoid it because a lot of them say the BOI has gotten is like the Jerry Springer Show of the reptile industry. Like the television show, the BOI is full of losers, with nothing better to do because they have no life, who show up just so they can give their opinions about things that have nothing to do with them. In short, they love a fight and they're all out of stuff to fight about in their own lives.
I think fixing this aspect will slowly gain back the respect of the breeders who run real businesses...and face it, you need THEIR support if you're going to make any money at this.
I actually have a competitor (who I also consider a friend), who has a clause in his terms that states all warranties/guarantees are VOID if the customer should post about a problem on the internet. He has a great reputation too, and I think that speaks volumes for the number of people who flat out abuse the BOI....and for the way honest business owners cringe at the thought of having to defend themselves here.
I've also had a larger breeder friend of mine (who also has a great reputation) tell me that I'm crazy for running banner ads here. He said it makes as much sense as a taxi cab company recruiting drivers at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting...not exactly the ideal target audience. Sometimes, I think he's right...and to be honest, there have been times when I swore I'd never run another banner ad here.
In my opinion, it's the BOI regulars (or ABUSERS) who have put you in this position. These regulars rarely have anything useful to add, and in most cases, their comments only detract from the value of a site like this. They just get a kick out of getting to play judge and jury...the power to ruin someone's business, especially someone they're jealous of, is intoxicating to them.
I am not a "paid contributor" or whatever, because I make it a point to not post here unless I have to. But I continue to support this site through banner advertising (spending FAR more money than a "contributor" badge would cost me) because I do believe it's a good idea...even though I know full well that good people can and do get screwed regularly on the BOI.
And I also agree with the point made by someone else...asking users to pay for this site isn't the answer. Obviously...that just compounds the problem (less traffic, less reason for someone like me to advertise). Don't take it personally, though...forum websites with a "pay to post" business model typically fail, that's nothing unique to your website.
Seems to me, making this part of your website more like eBay's feedback system would only upset the idiots that you want to get rid of anyway...kind of a win-win.
Not trying to knock you or your opinions or ideas...just putting my thoughts out there, just in case it might help you make the best decision for your family and for the people who utilize the BOI properly. As a fellow small business owner, I'd sure like to see you turn this thing around and make this site pay for your retirement.
Best of luck in whatever you choose.

In other words, an honest business owner wouldn't have to defend him or herself, it's the dishonest ones that would. Unfortunately, even with the BOI around the dishonest ones are still finding business.
