    =====================

I am still waiting on my developer to finish up on the Classifieds Control Panel so I can use it to encourage members into becoming paying members. Google Adsense has become a real burden on the viewing of this site, but honestly it is the ONLY source of income now that keeps it afloat. I tried offering disabling the ads being viewed by paying members, but apparently that is not enough incentive. Quite frankly, Google Adsense has dropped down to where it barely brings in enough daily to match even a single paid member per day. But it still gets the bills paid. But at what cost?

So even without the classifieds control panel being complete, I believe I am going to have to disable those Google ads completely and likely disable some options here that have been free since going to the new platform. Like classified ad bumping, member name changes, and anything else I can use to encourage this site to be supported by the members instead of the Google Adsense ads.

But there is risk involved. I will not pay out of pocket for very long during this last ditch experimental effort. If I find that the membership does not want to support this site with memberships, then I cannot support your being able to post your classified ads here for free. No, I am not intending to start charging for your posting ads here. I will just shut the site down and that will be it. I will be done with FaunaClassifieds. I certainly don't need this, and can live the rest of my life just fine without it. If I see that no one else really wants it to survive neither, then so be it. It goes away and you all can just go elsewhere to advertise your animals and merchandise.

Not sure when this will take place, and I don't intend to give any further warning concerning the disabling of the Google Adsense. Just as there probably won't be any warning if I decide to close down this site. You will just come here and there will be some sort of message that the site is gone, and you have a nice day.

I have been trying to make a go of this site for a very long time. And quite frankly, I am just tired of trying. I had hoped that enough people would be willing to help me help you all have a free outlet to offer your stuff for sale. But every year I see less and less people coming to this site, much less supporting it financially. That is fine. I tried. I retired the SerpenCo business about 14 years ago, so retiring out of this business completely is not that big if a step for me, nor will it be especially painful to do. When I was in Thailand, I did not check in here for three weeks. I didn't miss it even a little bit. So if you all want it to remain, it will be in your hands. I really don't care either way.

    =====================
Some people have indicated that finding the method to contribute is rather difficult. And I have to admit, that it is not all that obvious. So to help, here is a thread to help as a quide. How to become a contributing member of FaunaClassifieds.

And for the record, I will be shutting down the Google Adsense ads on January 1, 2025.

In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Someone educate this person for me, please.
Not worth the time. He's here on someone else's dime (almost literally), so maybe when he decides he's had enough "fun" here, he'll resort back to his "principles" or lack thereof, leave here (again)and return to the best place on the net

Again, the point of Gregg's original inquiry was if there was a slanting of the level playing field that was on Fauna.

And I do believe we are addressing that by discussing who it is that decides that the BOI is worth paying for in order to participate in.

Just about everything has costs associated with it. That's just a fact of life. What is exposure of the GOOD GUY kind worth on the BOI? How much does someone value the good will that their kind words towards someone will bring? How much is it worth to someone to be able to post a query about someone that doesn't come up in a search of previous posts for them to research? How much is it worth to someone to keep from making a mistake in their purchases? Those are the values that people need to consider. If it is not worth $10 per year to them, then so be it, no hard feelings on my part, and have a nice day.

But if we have a substantial group of people posting on the BOI that have felt it was worth paying for, what is that telling you? How many people have paid for this privilege that have not yet posted but are reserving that option for when it may be needed? What separates them from the people who do not think it is worthwhile? I think those are the issues that need to be addressed to determine if this is really a negative influence on the direction of the BOI, don't you? What exactly is it that has influenced the people who HAVE paid to be on the BOI to do so? What is it that THEY want the BOI to be and are trying to do so with their PAID presence? What are they MAKING the BOI into right now and is it a bad thing?

Hey john:

Rich asked for someone to educate me, not to waste their time passing judgement on me. My question stands however.

What are they MAKING the BOI into right now and is it a bad thing?

Well at least we agree upon something :D That is the question. We just have different opinions on the answer :argue:

Time will tell, then. I'm betting that I am right and you are wrong, however.

Want to make a small wager as to whether this site will still be here two years from now? That's if I am still alive, of course. :dgrin:

Of course it will be here in two years Rich. The question is What will it be. Can you educate me regarding my prior question as John responded by attempting to bash me and KS at the same time while avoiding the question.

Sure, I'll put $500 where my mouth is.

I'd like to hear your education of Ophis though, as I feel KS has a good business plan even though I don't like the totalitarian way they monitor their forums.

OK Ophis. Go to kingsnake.com and apply for a commercial advertising account and a front page link and let us know how free everything is there. Count up all the front page links and commercial accounts there with your new found knowledge of those costs and see what you come up with. Jeff has expenses and he chose a different way to recover them that apparently works for him. Different strokes for different folks. I'm doing what I think works, and is needed, on this site.

OK, $500 wager it is that FaunaClassifieds.com along with the Board of Inquiry will still be online and fully functional on May 7, 2007.

Will three people here signify as witnessing this wager?

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

I mean, I will signify and I will be here at that time, too..... :)

I have no doubt in our ability to defend our company's practices in a public forum. Matter of fact, the way a person handles a thread will have as large an impact (if not larger) on how others view them as the original situation that brought rise to the situation. Frankly the freedom you allowed people previously gave them enough to do their own hangings, so I don't feel protection was needed.

The fact that you didn't see what went on in the background doesn't negate my decision that it was necessary.

As for your ability to defend your reputation, well of course you can, and through some time, trouble and aggravation, no doubt on your part to do so. What my decision for paid memberships being a requirement, is for an application of the age old adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. That $10 fee is the ounce.

Exactly my point Rich. KS seems to do quite well using the standard route most commercial sites of the type use. Proffit is made from revenues generated by charging for advertising. This route was suggested to you when you started approaching the subject of making more money. Seems to me that if you have 19,000 members here that you could have gone that route. Instead you chose to make your proffit by inventing a membership higherarchy and charging as associated graduated fee.

A good number of people have a problem with this as they feel it has corrupted the integrity of the site.

Bashing; pot, kettle, black. That's all you've done since you returned on someone else's dime. Call it bashing, but it is my opinion that is poor principles to come back on someone else's dime and start bashing, when you said you were leaving this site on principles (that no longer seem to apply). As far as the question, I'm not avoiding it, it's a waste of time, just like I said. For one reason, because it's obvious it won't matter to you, and two because all you have to do is search-kingsnake, jeff B., or any number of keywords, to find out why a lot of peope don't like KS. Daniel brfiefly mentioned one of the reasons a post or few ago.

You can easily cover the spread with 10 bucks a head...care for something perhaps more costly??? :)

John:

As to your being upset that I am here on someone elses dime. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

As to me not caring about an explanation. Your right at this point, at least not one from you, since I'm quite sure it will consist of mostly Hog Wash.

I am however interested in a rational explaination from a rational respondant.

Was that the reference you had in mind there john? If you notice it was also stated that he felt they had a good business plan and would like to hear an explaination as well.
