BCI by Design...Brendan Magee. Very poor business ethics

Did Brendan pack the animal as well as he should have? Obviously not, but it did arrive alive. Has anyone else here ever made a mistake or had a lapse in judgement? I think we all know the answer to that one too! Give the guy a break and move on to some REAL bad guys, OK? Just my opinions here!

So you all agree it wasn't packed as it should have been, but since the animals arrived alive....so what, no big deal.

Nice attitude.

If you work with living, breathing beings you shouldn't have such a flippant attitude...their COMFORT is important, giving them the best chance of making it through shipping alive is important, not to willingly risk their lives to save a few bucks...is important.

Seems like many people miss the point here.

I guess ONCE a animal will actually arrive dead due to the sloppy and risky shipping method of this seller, THEN we are allowed to complain????

Oh but to bad that an animal will actually have to die a cruel death first...

Oh well.

Ps. and yes, as long as the seller is not willing to change their AGREED BY EVERYONE UPON crappy shipping method and flippant attitude about it, they are not a good guy, albeit def. not the worst either.

Thank you John. It is great to have someone's opinion here who actually has extensive experience with shipping reptiles. Just because I do not ship using the same method as Brendan, does not mean it does not work. The guy has been doing business for quite some time and, as far as I'm aware, has yet to have a deal gone bad. To me that speaks volumes. Perhaps we should all take a little more time to study understand our reptiles instead of just complaining on a public forum about how someone else is shipping them.

Exactly my thoughts denny. what these people fail to understand is snakes prefer it tight and cramped. It enhances thier feelings of security and seeing as the weather was not cold then no heat pack was necessary. had it been cold and a heat pack added then knowing brendan as i do im sure he would have shipped differently. for anyone who feels that they will not do business with brendan because of something silly like this i can only say 2 things 1. oh well your lose cause brendan has some of the most beautiful boas in the industry and 2. thanks more for me

no need to shout, so lay off the caps...

You know, everyone can have an opinion, and IMHO it doesn't matter if one ships/receives 10 or 1000 animals, or if one sends/receives $10 or $1000 animals.

You should still do your best. Now, just about EVERYONE in this thread agreed this shipping method stinks, even though the snakes arrived live.
So "newbie" or not doesn't really matter, I rather be a newbie and try to do my best, then be a "pro" and save a couple bucks even though my shipping method is mediocre at best.

What you fail to understand, is that even though snakes like it "cramped" there is a BIG difference whether they are cramped in a box with padding or cramped in a box without padding and just a thin styrofoam lining.
I think you can imagine how these boxes get thrown about.

But I guess some "pro's" are beyond reproach.

the lose of a customer? maybe maybe not,most likely yes... i HAD a great respect for brendan but after seeing this thread. He has lost all respect I had for him, ... .in my book. the snake should have been sent via delta dash with the papers inside the box.... that is professionalism. i do not care if i am shipping an $800 animal or an $8 dollar animal i package it the same way and dependant on what kind of animal it is is how i chose my carrier.. John, howmever you are it just goes to show you what you expect in a seller... apparantly you are not up to what is best for the snake.... and from your wriotings rather inexperienced.(not just this thread but others), so i just take your comments with a grain of salt If i had recieved a snake shipped to me like this..... i would have imediately contacted brendan and i would have shipped it back... total lack of respect for the life or the animal and complete lack of respect for his customers.... just so he can make an extra $50 bucks off the deal. Sounds like quite the tightwad... and the lack of professionalism.... that is what speaks volumes... and for someone whom had respect for bredan. as well as his brother... i do imagine with will hurt he and his brother busness.

You dont like my way of thinking so im inexperienced? whatever you say man . im sorry that we all dont have your experience . which is what bye the way? as for my care of animals you are saddly mistaken. you know what you dont know squat about me buddy cause if you did you wouldnt be talking out your brown eye .as for my experience it may not be the same as some of the herp gods but seeing as i do this for a living and have been doing so for the last 5 years day in and day out and to my knowledge i have yet to have a disatisfied customer pretty much says alot. once again would i have shipped like that no i wouldnt have but seeing as i have first hand experince with the way brendan has decided to ship , and seeing as my animal arrived safely, healthy and 100% stress free then i dont see a damn thing wrong with it. brendan provides quality animals at fair prices . he is easy to work with and one look at his animals and 1 phone conversation with him and you can most definatly see that he has great love for his animals . if you want to lose respect for someone because he see's and does things a bit differently than you do then hey thats your business the animal arrived alive and healthy obviously and if crazy canes was so disatisfied with brendans service why didnt he just simply send the animal back??? rather than just sling mud after the fact? and i think draging his brother's name into this is just a bit cheap this thread hs nothing to do with him so to even mention a loss of respect or business for him is just plain asinine and i think you owe him a appoligy

The apology should be for packing the snake in the manner that it was, first and foremost.

Robin's respect was lost, not because Brendan "does things differently", but because he did things with a wanton disregard for the snake's safety. Plain and simple, made a mistake and tried to save a few bucks with a bad packing job.

Keeping up with the whole, he did no wrong routine is making you look like this guy...

i will apologize to tim, i have bought from him and talk with him before, so in that Tim i truely appologize, however the relavance is that the two do projects together and work together, and you can't help that your brother just botched up your "family name" as well as certain lines of animals in which they produce together. This one transaction may very well hurt the both of them.

i do a quick read over but considering im legally blind im sure i miss quite a bit....... it sucks but what can ya do? i could read over it several times and still miss things just comes with the teritory.... try reading something through a thick frosted blass or through the distored,textured glass you see in doctors offices (behind where the receptionist is) and you are close to what i see like everyday

Maybe his responce was the way it was due to the fact he has shipped this way (it appears) many times, never with any problems (it appears) untill now (and maybe a problem of perception).

Next everyones calling him "cheap" or says he risked an animals life to "save a buck"

Well sad to say that happens EVERY DAY. OFTEN AT THE CHOICE OR PREFERENCE OF THE BUYER.

How many of you have tried to sell snakes only shipped LEGITIMATE ABOVE THE BOOKS MEANS (I.E. DELTA ONLY). I can tell you from experience you will have TONS OF CUSTOMERS PASS ON ANIMALS DUE TO SHIPPING COST. I have even had people pass on animals for not wanting to drive to the airport. I cannot count how many times I have had a customer say "You mean you cant just ship it to my door". I even went soo far as to price animals at retail WITH DELTA SHIPPING PRICED IN and people passed for not wanting delta shipping.

Again I personally wouldnt ship in the manner he did, but does that make him a "BAD GUY" who has no care for the animals (MANY OF WHICH HE PRODUCES HIMSELF) NO.

I cant say I blame you for your post, but for everyone to make it seem as if this is as bad as it reads, seems rather harsh to me.

Is the bag actually airtight?

If so, how long can a snake survive in the bag? If it is a week, then I have no issue with the seller. If it is 48 hrs., then I would have to say I DO have a problem. Sh!t happens, and some packages are late, even overnight, and it would be sad to see a package arrive at 49 hrs and have a suffocated snake.

AFTER TALKING WITH BRENDAN

I found out a few things 1st off he did not intend for his post to come off with an attitude. As we all know some times it is very easy to missunderstand a writers intention and attitude on here.
2nd the poster never ever once confronted brendan about his shipping methods. The guy received his snake and was happy with it. It was not untill he recieved the paper work that he had any kind of issue ( a reciept written by Rich Isle in rich isle's own hand writeing). The buyer upon contact with Rich Isle was supposedly told that with out a id number there was no way to verify the snake which was purchased at a show. Apparently either the id number was not available at said show or Rich Isle was too busy with other customers to write it down(anyone who has done a show can attest to this being very well possible). The animal in question was a breeder size 66% poss het albino that was knocked down in price by the buyer considerably . If he was so unsatisfied why was it that he never made Brendan aware of this or asked Brendan for a refund? Brendan would have gladly given it to him. you people can all say what you want about Brendan but unless you have actually dealt with the guy then all it boils down to is a bunch of old crows with way too much time on your hands! I have dealt with brendan on several ocasions, I know the quality of animals he produces and sells and I for one will continue to do business with him . i greatly recomend him to others and seeing as the majority of people posting on this thread are probably bearded dragon people and leopard gecko people your hardly qualified to wash the mans drawers let alone sling mud at him . 1 more thing you can also say that you wont do business with me because of my posts as mister magoo has already said he wouldnt and thats fine too thats your loss as well. at this point i really dont give 2 flying ..... well you know what i mean .Brendan Magee is a top knocth uper tier good guy
who not only cares about the animals in his care but also cares about his cutomers . Im proud to consider him my friend

I heard that addage said this way.. 'If you wrestle a pig, only you get dirty and the pig has all the fun', but anyway.. I wouldn't consider Brendan the pig here..

Now here are some observations and experiences:

~Brendan shipped this one snake this particular way that offended this one customer only after he didn't get what he wanted, when he wanted... and suddenly Brendan has poor business ethics and doesn't give a damn about his animals...
(I believe John said he received some snakes shipped in a similar fashion, but it was never an issue!)


~The animal arrived safe, healthy, and the BUYER also saved money. He then chooses to comlain about it (again) only after he didn't get what he wanted, when he wanted it.

~I have sent Brendan more than $12,000 over the past years and have NEVER had an issue, OR ANY animals shipped to me this way.
As a responsible purchaser of this animal, I would triple check shipping methods before agreeing to any deal.

~In the past, I once received a pair of Surinam Redtails, male 2.5 feet long, female 3 feet long, in a box measuring 6"X5"X4". There was NO STYROFOAM LINING, NO NEWSPAPER, NO PADDING - NOTHING - but the animals made it fine, 100%, and ate when they got home that night.
Seems impossible they even fit, right! you'd be surprised...

~I once had a boa lost in the mail. Was a baby Peruvian Redtail packed in a SEALED deli cup, NO HOLES, in a SEALED Styrofoam cooler, NO HOLES, in a taped box, with NO HOLES. The box was shipped Wednesday and I received it the following Wednesday, with a healthy Peruvian Boa inside, whom ate that night.
I msg'd the shipper and alerted him of his error, suggesting he pay a little more attention next time - that's all.

lost an animal during shipping. THATS FANTASTIC.
According to the rules of posting here, that is considered a FACT.
That the snake COULD HAVE died , or been abducted by UFO's, by those same rules are OPINIONS.
I myself have purchased animals without paperwork & I KNOW it is what the breeder claims it to be . I've even sold some @ shows where we talk for a time & the buyer is so excited to get the animal they run off with it . It happens. Brendan is someone I would trust as well. I have only had great experiences with him & will continue to do business with him.
Love this harlequin!!! I think I'll breed it with a sunglow , GOTTA GET that harlequin gene in to some yel-O!!!
I'm truley sorry you had a less than perfect transaction with Brendan, but he really is one of the good guy's.
Please cut him some slack because perhaps once in a lifetime someone can do a little less than ones very best.
Heck once I even cut my wife off after only 2 times because it was a weeknight

and seeing as the majority of people posting on this thread are probably bearded dragon people and leopard gecko people your hardly qualified to wash the mans drawers let alone sling mud at him .

i personally wouldnt want to wash the sh!t out of his draws........ but i do have a room of boids numbering around 40 or so all mainly adults or subadults....been this way the boid part of seven years now..... now i do also have a room of geckos and my husbands beardies but we have only had those a couple of years ..... so i think i am more than qualified to judge his shipping practices and actions....... just about every single animal in my collection has been shipped via delta dash or bought from the breeder directly at shows... only a few of the boas i have, have been shipped via some other way... and i can count those animals on one hand and those dealers were shipping them legally and in the correct manner.... as for the air tightness of the bag.... why dont you go pick one up put something in it, possibly even yourself with a cool pack or even nothing at all set it outside and see how long it lasts, even try it at night do be "more fair"
