In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I've never had to post on here about a bad dealing and hoped that I never would have to, but I'm not sure what exactly to do about this situation.  I'm hoping that with everyones combined experiences on here I can figure out what I should/could do.

Yesterday I got out of work early and decided to start our spring snake facility cleaning early.  Once a year around this time we rip EVERYTHING apart and clean the heck out of the place.

Well we did the rat room first and then moved onto the snake room.  Decided to do the X-Large boa cages first.

I removed the two racks we have, both are Bush X-Large Racks.  Four levels in each stack.  We house our breeder female boas in these cages.  Usually all we do is pull the tubs forward, empty the paper, spray down with viroscan and clean them and replace the paper and move on, but today we pulled the tubs out all the way and cleaned the racks themselves.

For a little background I have ALWAYS been a BIG supporter of Bush Herp.  Whenever people have asked on the boa forums about rack systems I've always given my two cents on Bush Racks because it seems everyone else uses Freedom Breeders.  I've had great success with them and I tend to tell people about products I use that I love.

What I noticed about the racks though caught my eye.  Several of the cages have completely yellowed along the back side, the plastic that is on the tops of the cages has also come "unglued" they glue the plastic around the edges to the powder coated metal and it has completely unglued over time I guess.  And in some areas the paint has chipped away and rust is now showing.  These are all things that could EASILY be fixed and as a result I decided to send an email to Bush telling them about this.  I've had some small problems in the past when I've received shipments and they've fixed them without a hitch so I assumed this would be no big deal.

This is the email I sent:

Subject: Racks...

I've purchased several rack levels from Bush over the past few years now and have problems nearly every time I've ordered however you've always been prompt in fixing those problems and seeing to it your customers are satisfied. Wanda has always been great about dealing with mix-ups in shipping and damaged units arriving so to this point i've been pleased.

However, with the recent warm up in temps we moved our racks out for a thorough cleaning of not just the tubs, but the racks themselves.  What I found with the cleaning is that maybe I should have done this sooner.  Almost all of the lids to our X-Large cages are coming un-glued, the metal framing is starting to peel in areas and corrode and several of the edges are badly yellowing on certain sides.  I'm not sure if this what I should expect of your product with time or if I just received some problem racks, but this is unncacceptable in my eyes.

I want to know how I can go about shipping these units back for a refund or what you can do to replace/fix this problem.  I do have a digital camera and will be MORE then happy to take photos of these problems for you to see yourself.

Again i'm very dissapointed with what I've discovered and hope we can clear this up as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Guy Scavone II

Several hours later I check my email and had two emails from Wanda @ Bush:

First:
Good Morning Ted,

Please help me with this because I can see that it's going to be another one of those days - these people really frustrate me.  I need your opinion on what I should tell this guy about his problem?  He bought four levels of the Pro Breeder rack system in 7/00 and four more levels 7/01.  He's spent about 3,000.00 total.

Thank You,
Wanda Katruska

Second:
Wanda Katruska would like to recall the message, "Racks...".

Needless to say I read the email and realized that it WAS NOT intended for me.  I was steamed to say the least to see that she was "frustrated" with ME!  I figured, heck, i'm the customer, my racks are falling apart, shouldn't "I" be the frustrated one.. and then she sends another email trying to RETRACT it!?!?!?  Obviously she knew she had made a mistake.

I called Bush immediately and spoke with Wanda.  I told her how dissapointed I was to get an email like that after I had been so pleased with her service in the past.  I then asked to speak with "Ted" whom I assume owns Bush.

I got on the phone with Ted, and told him I was upset about receiving the email and how unprofessional I felt it was.  He felt there was nothing derogatory about the email and that I should let it go.  I even understood THAT, but I brought it up again and he got irate telling me he would NOT talk about the email anymore and that I had to call back tomorrow to discuss things as I was upset and he didn't want to talk to me now.  I told him I was calm and just wanted to straighten the situation out and asked what he planned on doing to rectify this.  He said he felt he didn't have to do "anything".  I then tried to talk again and he explained I should call tomorrow and then hung up on me.  Yes, he hung up on a customer.  I took it in stride, called back, got him on the phone and told him I wanted to talk now, that I was calm, and wanted to straighten this out.  He got infuriated and I told him I wished I had a tape recorder to save the way he was treating one of his customers.  That seemed to make him even angrier and then he flat out told me he wouldn't talk, I'd get an email, and he hung up.

This is the email I received:

Dear Mr. Scavone,

Bush Herpetological Supply appreciates your business.  I will not however, tolerate your phone calls of May 31 nor your veiled threat of “wishing I had a recorder”.  All future correspondence needs to be either in email form to my address or written letter which may be faxed to 620.325.3510.

We would like to have digital pictures of the lids and the “peeling” of the rack “paint”.  We will then make a determination of what, if anything, we can do to help you with the problems you are encountering.

Sincerely,

Ted Peitz

I COULDN'T believe this.  They say on there website they pride themselves on customer service.  I backed this company for two years and this is what I get.  I spent $3,000 with them and they don't care?!  I was calm and professional with this man on the phone in a situation that "I" should have been the upset party, but "He" goes off on me?!

So board, what do I do?  What can I do?  Was I out of line?  Tell me I was and i'll drop it.  I don't want this to turn into something it's not, but what happened to "the customer is always right"?!

So I sit and wait, what should I do?

If you read this much I'm sorry it was so long, but I had to get this off my chest.

Thanks,

Guy Scavone II

ps.  Maybe I should have just gone with the freedom breeders?

Hi Guy!

Sorry to hear about your problems.  Would it be alright with you if I saved a copy of this post so that if I ever face a similar customer problem in the future, I will know exactly how NOT to act?

I've been saving up to buy some cages...I don't think I'll be using Bush...I think it's a load of crap and if a broken product gives Wanda a bad day I hate to know what happens when her car breaks!!!!

Guy...personally, I don't think YOU did anything wrong! It was the secretary who started this mess with her mis-titled email?? I would try calling him again, and....if you have to....swallow a little pride and apologize for the way you acted the other day (even though you did nothing wrong)....that always throws them for a loop....I just can't understand why he got frustrated with you, unless he was seeing RED because of his secretary's mistake??? I really think that if both sides calmed down (as I am trying to do), these things CAN be worked out?? Send him your pictures with a... "thank you for taking the time to look at them", speech, and see where it goes from there...put the ball in their court and let them run with it?? You can figure out your next step, then! Good luck....Neil

Guy,

The only thing that I can see that you did which may have caused this scenario to go off kilter is that you started off your email by saying that you've had problems with them on almost every order.  Now, you immediately followed that up by praising them for their service in rectiying those problems, but that may have put Wanda in the mood she expressed in her wayward email.  I certainly can't see how any of that, even if you did not praise them as you did, would warrant such a response from a business seeking to keep customers (especially repeat customers such as you were)!

I'd say you should try to recover whatever you can from them via the manners set forth by Ted.  If you get satisfaction, great!  If not, perhaps it will be a lesson we can all learn from your misfortune.

Good luck --

Thanks for the responses guys.  Glad to see that I'm not entirely crazy.

To be honest I don't even want to waste my time with these people anymore.  To think that I spent my hard earned cash on a company that shows its customers 0 respect frustrates me even more.  I know how I treat the people I deal with and I've always been a firm believe in treat people how you expect to be treated, but it back fired this time I guess.

Guess it's there loss since we just finished our new addition to the snake room and are looking to add $5,000-$10,000 in new cages.

Maybe I'll just send them the receipt I get from Freedom Breeder?!

Guy

Here's the email I just sent to Ted at Bush Herp.  Needless to say I won't be doing anymore business with their company.

Ted, I'm sorry that you felt I was over-reacting and far to upset to talk today, but I guess that email was "no big deal" and I should have taken it in stride.

The way you acted towards me on the phone was both unprofessional and rude to say the very least.  I won't waste my time nor my breath any further with trying to remedy this situation

And to think that I was planning on buying more cages for this summer's babies.  I'll definitely be ordering from Freedom Breeder now.  Suppose I should have listened to everyone else and gone with them in the first place.  Live and learn I suppose.

At any rate, I'll be sure to pass my experiences with Bush Herp on to my customers and friends.

Guy Scavone II

I will say for any kind of herp-related products that Big Apple Herp has been a pleasure to deal with.  They understand what customer service is.

As far as caging.  I'm sure my dealings with Freedom Breeder will go smoothly!

I'll keep you guys posted.

Thanks,

Guy

Let me start by saying I own Neodesha cages and the Bush which are about the same thing. As the Neodesha's age they  become worthless. I am talking about the slanted ones. The fiberglass gets brittle and breaks and the sliding doors become impossible to open. The newer Bush one's I have seem to work better but we'll see as they age.

Second: I think anyone who reads this needs to send an email to Ted at Bush and personally tell him that we are a "community" of customers. What a company does to one customer they can eventually do to us. Let them know that by mistreating one customer they are telling the rest of us that they don't REALLY appreciate our business. I persoanlly won't buy another product of theirs, not only because of this situation, but the quality problems I have had myself.

Post Ted's email so we can bypass Wanda and go straight to him. I don't mean gang up on Ted and hammer him, like happens here frequently, but just let him know we all stick together as a community and won't tolerate being treated in that way.

Mike Jones

Mike, thanks, I appreciate the support.  This truly does seem to be a tight knit bunch and I really do like it.  Good to see people banding together for the right thing.

However, I don't want to see Tim bashed on my accord.  The man could have just beem having a bad day.  I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt.  If the case is you want to tell them about the quality, or lack there of, of their products, thats a different story.

Thanks again,

Guy Scavone II

Thought I'd throw out a plug here.  I have some of the original prototype Vision Cages.  These go way back, long before they started making the grey ones they currently do.  I have white, two different blues, black, and a few of the grays as well.  I keep everything from rat snakes to large burms in them.   These things are indestructable!  Drop em, bang em, heat em, cool em, they don't care.  I can pick up the big ones and carry them outside w/ one hand (6 footers!&#33<img src="http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>  I would definately recommend them.  I belive they are much cheaper than freedom breeders, maybe not as easy to clean though.  Check them out at the very least.

Thanks Guy,
You have saved me some grief down the road. I just finished my second snake room and will soon be buying racks and cages. Glad I read this thread and now know to stay away from that supplier.

Guy,

Sounds like you allready DID something. You gave a company that doesnt respect its customers your hard earned money. First time......shame on them. Second time, shame on you.........

The email that was sent to you was an affront. The person involved was discussin YOUR problem with soemone else, free speech and al that rubbish, but they sent it to YOU.

                          How dumb is that?

If your going to rip someone off, at least have the intelligence to know how to insult them properly without  makeing yourself look bad in the process...geez.

I will be honest with you, I am NOT impressed by many cages on the market today. I use Vision cages almost 100% and there was times I wish I didnt. If piled one on top of the other with no rack, the bottem ones BUCKLE, the glass doors wont come out, and it onylt akes a small amount of weight to get the top ones todo the same. Say a ten gallon tank 1/2 full of water. But they are lighter, clean easier and are fair in price. A trade off you might say.

I haver used Bush cages, and the displays they sell for shows are one of the best and nice. the cages need special racks, they are awkward and require either custom racks or ones that they sell. I had some. Right now they are all(Seriosuly) being use as cattle and pig troughs for friends of mines livestock. they make great pig troughs btw.

I would try to get them to reimburse you, at least partially, then use any money you MIGHT? get and go out and buy nice cages. Jeff Ronne sells some nice cages for boas and other snakes, made of plastic. I wish I could buy some of his cages but I am heavily invested in my "decision"
O if we had onkly known then what we know now, eh?

I've used Vision cages for the last few years (about 7 or so) and have been extremely pleased with the quality (even the longer models I have - 54").  While the older larger models can buckle under weight and make opening the sliding glass doors difficult (I have one older model I've experienced this with - easily solved by putting it on top), I have had no problems with stacking the newer models which have a formed plastic beam in the middle of the front opening that is reinforced with an aluminum plate.  At present I have two of the 54" models stacked and on a rack with an asortment of other sizes on the shelf above them (I don't have more than 3 of any size cage).  The prices are moderate, you can build or purchase racks for them if you so desire, they come with a built-in litter dam, the channels for the sliding glass are aluminum not plastic or fiberglass, and they're easy to clean & heat (I've used both flexwatt tape and heat lamps - all are heated w/ lamps @ the moment).  In short, I personally won't buy any other cage.

FWIW, I have owned/used Neodesha cages in the past (the slanted type).  I thoroughly hated them.  The flexwatt tape (set at 87 degrees) caused the material to yellow and become brittle.  The heat lamp melted the glue around the 'lamp/light safe' vent on the top of the cage (we're talking no more than a 60 Watt bulb here).  The plastic tracks for the glass doors would warp and make the door difficult to open.  And last but not least, I always had problems with any water or urine spilled/deposited near the glass panes to leak onto the rack or cage below because there is no litter dam.  I know many people use them with no problems what-so-ever but I like things to last when I'm spending large sums (for me anyway) money on them.  I got rid of or pitched the Neodesha & glass cages I had been using and replaced them with Visions.  I keep a few tanks on hand in case I need them for new aquisitions or quarantines but otherwise it's Vision all the way and I have been completely satisfied.

Best of luck for whichever manufacturer you choose.

Dianne

I recently purchased 2 of Visions model 322. It took 6 weeks to receive them. When they finally arrived 1 of them was so warped that the doors are almost impossible to open without great force. In addition the screen that covers the light shroud is buckled and has a large open gap.
I contacted Vision about the problem and they said to send it back. When I asked them if it would take another 6 weeks to get a replacement I was told that first they had to determine whether or not it was their fault(remember these were brand new cages). The guy then told me that he couldn't really say how long it would take to get another one.
I figured I would just chalk it up as a bad experience and decided to buy 4 more from Russ Lockenwitz in New York since he keeps them in stock. When they arrived 2 of them had the same problems as the original shipment from Visions.
So out of 6 cages 3 of them are defective. I would strongly recommend looking for another manufacturer when you decide to purchase your cages.

I have to agree with alot of what has been stated regarding both Neodesha and Vision caging.
The Neodeshas become VERY brittle with age.  The Visions DO warp when stacked, and I have even seen them yellow up like the neodeshas do.
BUT, I think the Visions are superior if not over stacked AND if when stacked, the same size is used.  I personally like their arboreal cages best.

Of the two, I would go with Visions, but there are still problems with them, as well.

I have to agre with Rob o something he said in his reply; " Visions work well if not OVER STACKED.  If you talk to anyone at visions thy will tell yu how high they reccommend stacking each particular size.  I have been using visions caging for abou five years now and they key is to not over stack.  I will say that the I have the arboreal cubes and I keep tem in stacks of three and the bottom cage is a bit hard to get the glass out of, but not to open and close, but I had Neodesha cages prior to visions and I will say that I love my visions !!!!

Hi Winston!

Thanks for the question!

I can answer any questions you have about Boaphile Plastics.  Being the National Sales Manager helps in that respect. ;-)

Boaphile plastics were definately built to last.  They were designed to be lightweight, rugged cages that will hold up to all kinds of rough treatment.  They are easy to heat and stackable to the ceiling if you want to.  The flip down doors do not jam up like sliding ones do and the hinges and barrel bolt latches are made of steel rathen than plastic.

You can also get them in Colors!  Black and white are standard colors, but there are many more available!

Please contact me with any other questions either specifically about boaphile Plastics or for product comparisons.
