I take full responsiblity for what happened between Lori and I but would like a chance to explain myself.

At the begining of Feb some else had puchased my group of geckos for $165 shipped. As soon as the payment was made the temps up here dropped dramatically and didn't rise above 20 degrees for about a month and a half. The person who had bought the geckos at the time definately wanted them so I used the money to help purchased college books (I'm leaving again in June) I understand this was my first mistake. After about a month and a half the buyer decied they wanted a refund. I informed them that I would have to resell the geckos before I could refund her money and she agreed. I then resold the geckos to Lori's son Nick and paypalled the money they sent to me to the previous buyer. I then told them I would ship that thurs UPS. The place I went to ship is called Mail Boxes Ect. in Honesdale PA and they informed me that it would cost $112 to ship them overnight. Now, I've shipped many many reptiles out of this very place UPS and it's never cost me more than $35 so I was absolutely struck back by what they wanted to charge me and I knew Lori wouldn't want to pay an extra $112 to ship so I didn't. Later that night Lori's son Nick called me for the tracking number and I told him the situation and he was fine with it. I told him I would ship on Monday USPS. I hate using USPS, absolutely hate it. I rarely ever have packages arrive on time using them. Over the weekend I decided I would just keep the geckos and try to sell them locally since the only way I could ship was USPS and refund Lori her money. I had previously told Nick that the reason I need to sell them was to use the money they sent me to pay back a previous buyer so they knew I had to spend the money right away. I get paid on Fridays and thought that she would be okay with waiting a few days for her money back. Obviously she did mind but there wasn't anything I could really do about it. I did paypal her money back to her this morning in full. I truly apologize to Lori that all this had to come about, I admit to all my errors. I am a novice in the herp trade and am learning from my mistakes. I can promise the herp world that I'll never let anything like this happen again. Think what you want of me but I really didn't mean for this to turn out this way. I know what it feels like to get burned or screwed on a deal and most of you probably already know of one. Again, I apologize to Lori and Nick.

Before we all go patting Diana on the back, let's think of this-your hard luck story just doesn't wash. So what if you had no money???Why didn't you just ship her the geckos??? You know, exactly like you promised??????

Ship them how, through a carrier she had no faith in, and that no one else recomends either (USPS) or the carrier that wanted $112.00. Granted she could have looked around for a different way to get them sent UPS. She did say that she had shipped from this place before for $35.00. I'm sure she questioned that amount when quoted, but if you are used to something costing one price and suddenly are quoted a much higher price you can figure one of two things. Either the price went up (way up in this case) or the person calculating the cost made a mistake. If she questioned the quote and was assured that it was correct what was she to do. make a big fuss over it with someone who probably couldn't do anythingf about it anyway.

Yes there are other shipping options, but some people are understanding when problems develope.

I am not saying anything at all here about the her having spent the money. That point has been made clear by several people. I am only addressing the issue that Gino brought up as to why she simply didn't ship the animals.

To be quite honest, the quoted prices are ridiculous. They have a chart that is given to them by UPS with the rates on it. If another price is quoted then that person does not know how to read the chart and you ask someone else there to read it.
All she would have had to do was package the animals up, take them to the UPS counter and ship them end of story. It would have only cost her about $35-$40 to ship them at the counter. I get so sick and tired of hearing this story that a mail boxes etc, or other shipping company like that is to blame. They are NOT the one to blame. If a person does not have 100% the ability to quickly ship the ordered item to the buyer then they DO NOT need to be selling PERIOD. Another thing, all a person has to do it log onto UPS website and sign up for an account which takes 5 minutes and they can charge it to their credit card or debit card and have the package picked up from their house. If a person wishes to use those kind of shipping companies (mail Boxes etc.) then they are taking the responsibility for the shipping. If you tell a customer you are going to ship on a day you ship on that day. If you run into a problem you immediately tell them and ship it at a time that is agreeable by the customer. Also if you take a payment for an animal you do not use that money until the animal is at the buyers and they are happy with the animal.

Diana made the right thing by coming in here and accepting full responsibility for what happened. Probably a lesson learned.

But there are several things that could have been handled differently. This is not a criticism; it is just an opinion.

I agree with Rob's statement in the above quote. The customer has priority over other issues. I can understand when a problem suddenly arises, but this was not the case. The fact is that on Thursday evening Diana notified Nick she was going to ship Monday USPS. On Friday she got her pay check. Over the weekend she decides not to ship USPS but to put up the geckos for sale again instead (for the third time without having shipped them even once!). She could have sent the money order with the refund Monday overnight instead of the geckos.

I told him I would ship on Monday USPS. I hate using USPS, absolutely hate it. I rarely ever have packages arrive on time using them.

The fact that you "hate" USPS shouldn't be the reason as of why you don't want to ship through them. The matter of concern should be that it's illegal to ship live reptiles through USPS.
 
Regarding UPS

Rob, just to expand a bit on your statement regarding UPS. It's not quite as simple as you make it out to be. In order to ship the geckos from UPS she would need an account, as well as pre approval to ship the lizards. It is a simple process that requires a few phone calls and a few forms signed and faxed, takes about 7-10 days to get approved.
That being said, I 100% agree with you that if you don't have the shipping aspect figured out, no way should you even be advertising the animals.

Under normal circumstancees yes it takes a little to get approved but I know a ton of people who ship their live animals with UPS that have not been through the process like I and others have. On the web site they can do the shipment and prepay for it and still need to mark the box as live reptiles and such. Once the package has been paid for they will be able to ship it. I am not saying this is something that should be done all the time but it coule be accomplished without a big headache specially for one shipment.

Thanks, I was unaware of that, when I set my UPS account I just went through the routine of getting an account and the pre-approval to ship, since I was planning on shipping often.

Thanks for pointing that out. You are right, the list of "exceptions" includes lizards. Here is the list of reptiles you can ship USPS if their size and packaging is appropriate:

You do not need an account to ship via UPS.

Funny how when I come to bottom line threats she replys. Maybe it's just me but it seems a little strange ... then again maybe her computer was on the blink.

and then later she send me a mail saying that she can pay pal me the money and needed my pay pal addy.

I send that to her and get my money back.

I wouldn't have posted on here IF it hadn't been that Lori and her Son got messed around with pretty much the same deal.

Your post is exactly what should be on this BOI

It certainly does raise a few questions. Having read your post with the email exchanges it appears that Diana Mason is someone that is either extremely unlucky with weather conditions or is too careless in leaving packing materials where they can be damaged?

Did she have your phone number?

If so, then she should of called and told you that she woldn't be shipping the day she said she would.... a simple call would of saved you $100 out of your paycheck.

Diana should be notified of your posting to explain her side of the story. I am sure we will hear about the weather and the cat, but if she had your number then there is no excuse for not letting you know she wouldn't ship the day quoted.
 
No I didn't give her my number and I didn't have hers. Something I will know better not to be with out in the future.

BUT even with that said Diana had Lori's number and when she didn't ship for Lori she didn't call Lori either. Nick (Lori's son) is the one who had to call her to find out what was going on.

And Yes I do belive this post has been pointed out to Diana as she poste back some three odd pages ago.


I'm not sure if she's looked at the other posts on this page.... but my guess would be yes....
