In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Eye Infections in Leopard gecko - A Sad Story

If it is a viral infection it should not have any relation to the fact that the affected leo's are snow's. I check the Reptile Medicine and Surgery book and it could also be a bacterial infection, caused by Pseudomonas, but it will be hard to tell with out finding out for sure what the cause was. Might be a good idea to sterilise all your gecko enclosures / tubs just to be sure.

Hope you find out what the actual problem is and it does not affect the rest of your gecko's.

Good luck

paul

I am so very sorry to hear about what is happening to your Snow’s. I know how much you enjoy them.

Yes, I was very excited about them, and I only got to work with them for 1 season.

I know the fact that they are snows has nothing to do with it, it is the fact they they are all related that bugs me.

I am in the works for having them checked for bacterial infections.

Thanks Paul!

Jeanne, sorry to hear this is a worse problem then when we last talked. I hope for the best outcome possible.

Yeah, the problem just spiraled out of control after I talked to you. If there is a way to save them, I will find it!

Wow, wut a bummer. The thing I don't understand is why they would give you medication for a viral infection. Now if my health and bio teachers were right, which they may not be, but if they are, viral infections can only be stopped by the host. No medications really work. You give medication for bacterial infections, like penumonia. I'd be seeking a new vet as well if I was in your shoes. I know that most vets don't see exotics the same way they see those furry lil' devils, ie dogs and cats. I really hope your geckos turn out alright. It sucks to lose them, I know, I've been down that road a few times myself. Good luck Jeanne!

Jeanne,
That's heartbreaking to read, let alone be going through it. I hope your vet gets something figured out before the problem gets worse. Good luck and please keep us posted.

I'm sorry to hear about your girls, Jeanne! It really is amazing how many different difficulties they come up with. The job of an exotic vet is certainly a difficult one - to be able to identify so many problems in so many species. I sure hope that they show some improvement for you soon! It's so stressful when they are sick and you don't know why!

I hope everything works out, I know how stressful this can be, keep your chin up!

Thank you Jeanne! You too, I hope your girls all pull through this and your and your vet find a cause so that they get all better.

Jeanne, it really is heartbreaking to see them suffer; I hope the problems can be solved soon!! Good luck!!

Jeanne- I am so sorry to read of the problem that you are having and I pray that a new vet might be able to make a difference in treatment for them
My heart goes out to you and you and your Leos are in my prayers

Exactly why we need to post these types of threads when they happen, so we can learn from them. If anybody has any experience with eye infections, please post it here! Any info may help.
Jeanne, I think it is vital that when we experience these problems that we share it with the rest of the Leo community... we can learn so much from each other! Too many times problems like this get swept under the rug due to embarrassment or fear that our reputations as breeders will become tarnished if we went public. With threads like this one, we can all have the benefit of learning about these things, and can hopefully draw from the knowledge and support of the Leopard Gecko community.

Kudos to you, Jeanne.

Thank You Marcia

I totally agree with you. Live and Learn! "S hit" happens to EVERYONE. And it is ok, especially when we use these experiences to strengthen our knowledge so that maybe the next time it happens to somone else we can look back at these threads as a learning tool.

There is so little known about reptile health issues, we need to share these experiences to be able to take better care of our little friends :)

I hate to say this but if it is a viral infection then no amount of medication will cure it a virus is something that has to be fought off by the body unlike a bacterial infection which can be cured by medication. The only thing you can do for a virus is take or give something to calm the symptoms its like when a person has a cold they can take something to calm the cough or sore throat but in the end the body has to fight it off. I know most people will say that animals are different from humans and thats true but in many cases an animal can contract the same diseases or virus's that people can. I really hope that a new vet can tell you exactly whats wrong or can correct the problem since this is just heartbreaking to think of your poor leo's in this condition and I really hope that in the end they can live long healthy lives without having to put them down. I really wish I could be more help but when I worked for a vet we only saw a handful of reptiles and even then we were guessing as to what was wrong since reptile vets weren't that popular that I know of at the time.

As far as I know a viral infection can't be genetic but an infection can be passed on if the mother got it before she became pregnant or after. I know that in cats if a mother cat has feline leukemia that she can pass it on to her kittens through her milk or during pregnancy so in this case the virus might have been dormant until she started producing eggs or it might not have been noticeable until after because of the stress from producing the eggs since it does take a lot out of the female body to produce offspring. I'm by no means a genetic expert or a medical genius but I have done my fair share of genetic research because of my own genetic problems and I will have to say that genetics are nothing more than a guessing game still so this could be something that stems back way before one of her ancestors ever got put into captivity if its genetic since certain genetic traits or problems won't show up for years.

didnt i already say that bolded part? I hate when vets try giving medication for something viral knowing full well it wont do nething. its happened to a few dogs of mine. is there an institution that guards against that kind of thing?

Jeanne,
I have been following this thread but haven't had the time to post. I am so sorry you are going through all this.Somehow...I don't know why...I really think its genetic somehow. If it were bacterial or viral wouldn't at least one other gecko have been affected. Are their eyes oozy at all. I am wondering if there is such a thing as genetic blindness or something like that. That maybe laid dormant in them and something triggered it.Maybe I'm grasping at straws here But I just can't see how it couldn't possibly be genetic somehow. If no other gecko is affected just those 2 related that are kept seperatly anyway.I do hope you find an answer to this.I am very glad you posted this I know how hard it must be on you. Your snows are gorgeous. But without posts like this we have no way to learn of these things
