    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Eye Infections in Leopard gecko - A Sad Story

I think it is Genetic too. It is too much of a coincidence that only these 3 related geckos are infected. And to answer your question, no their eyes aren't oozy, just cloudy and one of them (Sammie) has one eye that is green, it is weird.

Also, I realised that each one got the eye infection after becoming gravid. I just noticed that Oreo, the last one to get the infection, is gravid. So, all 3 of them got the eye problem after becoming gravid. Of coarse I won't be incubating the eggs.

Unfortunately, I don't think Sammie is going to make the weekend, I will probably have to put her down. Last night she refused food, and tonight I couldn't even get her to take the meds. It has come down to a quality of life issue.

Here is a picture of my Sammie, she was such a good girl! The pictures are a little old, but its all I have.

Ok then Jeanne, if the eyes are not oozy at all, as in no excreations...then I think its some type of genetic blindness brought on by being gravid which makes sense because it is when gravid they use all of their resources in their bodies so they are more worn down which would bring on any dormant genetic defect.I think that makes sense...LOL

Wow, wut a pretty girl. That really stinks. I've been down that road before, just in a different way. Damn shame its going this way. I guess quality of life must come over life and just life eh?
 
Thank you everyone. Yes, she was very pretty, I loved how the yellow continued down into the base of her tail, kind of different.

The other 2 girls are doing about the same as before. But, they aren't eating as well either, but they are taking their meds.
 
Update.....

Well, I had the geckos on the viral meds for a few days and in those few days, they seamed to get worse, not eating, eyes looked worse. So, I took them off those meds last Friday, tomorrow I am bringing them in for their 3rd and final test. I am having their eyes swabbed for a culture. If this test comes back positive, then they have a Bacterial infection and that is curable.

I was able to feed everyone last night with no problems, they all got soaked in warm water (pooped in the water, which I don't mind because it was healthy looking stools). Fortunately, they seem to not be losing any more weight at the time, which is positive.

Well, everyone wish them luck!

The Results are in.........

Well, I just got the results from the eye culture. They found 2 types of bacteria, Pseudomonas and Achromobacter. And, the treatment for these 2 types are the meds that they gave me on my last visit, which I had to stop applying to have the culture done. So, I will continue with their meds and hopefully they will recover.

Unfortunately Dominoe passed away this weekend. I don't think it was from the eye infection, I think it was from the stress of the tests, being force fed, etc.

I really hope this was a one time problem. Between the money spent, time taking care of them (Feeding, helping shed, giving meds), and my nerves, I am WORN OUT!!!!

I will let you all know how Oreo and Sammie does, please keep your fingers crossed for them!
 
Jeanne, sorry to hear about domino. I'm glad to hear that they have an answer though. Is it something that you have to worry about spreading? Any thoughts on the origin of the infection?

They said that if it isn't Genetic that it could spred, they said not much is known about Reptile illnesses so they can't say for sure. They aren't even sure that the meds are going to work. But, they are in a strict quarentine area, far away from any other animals. And, they get taken care of last so no chance of spreading. Trust me, the last thing I want is to go through this again.

They said it could have been a lot of things, hides/enclosure too moist, food gone bad, feces, etc.
 
Jeanne, I'm so sorry you lost Dominoe... Let's hope that the medication is effective and the other two make a full recovery!
 
Jeanne, I'm so sorry to hear about Dominoe!! I know how devastated you must feel. I will certainly keep the other two in my thoughts and I wish them a full - and speedy recovery!!

I am so sorry to hear about Dominoe...I know how much you loved her. My fingers and toes and everything else that can cross are crossed for the other 2.I know how totally drained you must be with this. I am praying the other 2 make a speedy recovery for you.

Well, I started up their meds again last night. I also flushed their eyes out, I was able to get the last of the puss or what ever it is out, so now their eyes are perfectly clear.

And, now that I know I have the right meds I am sure they will make a full recovery :)
