Hello everyone,
Two weeks ago I answered a fauna add from Joe Goodnough of FIRSTBALLMORPHS for a 586 g spider and two large "1200 to 1300g" females - the price was 5200.
I checked on here and there were no posts about Joe either good or bad. he seemed like an ok guy, so we agreed on 5000 for the group. He told me he was going to ship the animals DHL. Then, after he shipped them, he told me he shipped them USPS. ACK!!! But, the animals did arrive safe and sound on Wed Jan 26.
One small problem though. The "586g proven breeder spider" tipped my digital scale at 330! This was a major issue for me because the whole reason I bought the spider is that I have ten huge girls sitting here that I intended to use on another project this year. A 330g boy, even if it did hook up once (which at this point I highly doubt), was not going to do the job for me. Joe knew exactly why I was purchasing the spider and how I wanted to use him, by the way.
And, those two 1200g girls? They weigh 535 and 721. I'm thinkin' they might not lay eggs this year!
Immediately I emailed Joe and told him they had arrived safely, and the spider was pretty, but telling him about the huge size disparity. I also emailed him pictures of all three snakes on my digital scale reading the weight.
He wanted to send me a few more "big girls" to make up for it, initially saying he had a faulty scale. I told him no number of girls would make up for this, GIRLS I HAD! What I needed was a breeding spider. I suggested three resolutions. 1) He refund my full amount and I send back the snakes 2) He give me a partial refund - I suggested 1200, and I keep them, 3) He let me borrow his adult male spider for the season and I would give it back with a baby, and I would keep this animal for next year and he would keep the money.
A few phone calls ensued. Joe kept insisting that this male had indeed bred a female. On Friday the 28th I agreed to put the male with a female over the weekend "just to see." and that we would talk again Monday evening Jan 30. He also agreed to refund me $1,000 if I kept the animals. (He told Ralph Davis the same thing when Ralph talked to him about this deal.)
Over the weekend I had decided it seemed really unlikely I would get the full amount back, and it was a pretty snake, so I tried repeatedly to get ahold of him by phone Monday and Tuesday. He didn't pick up or answer emails. So, on Tuesday I wrote him the following email:
Hi Joe,
Since we haven't made contact by phone, I wanted to let you know what I am thinking. I went back and forth alot about this, because while he is a very nice animal, he's not what was described to me (and neither are the two girls). He has not eaten or showed any interest in girls - of course he is still settling in.
Part of me thinks I should just send them back (with a new digital scale, "on me"), since it seems that you doubt what I have been saying about their weights. You could refund my money and try to sell him for what you feel he is worth. Then, you would not feel like I am somehow taking advantage of you. If you want to go this route, that's fine with me - just start the process of getting my money back to me and I will ship them.
However, I am willing to keep him if you refund the $1,000 you offered by the end of the week, in full. He is a pretty animal and should make a nice breeder next year.
Please let me know what you want to do right away.
Thanks, Christy
I'm sure you all know the rest of the story. I have emailed and called at least once a day. This guy is nowhere to be found. At least he WAS nowhere to be found until my husband happened to check out Faunaclassifieds today. Joe had placed an add for an adult spider for sale and a "450 g" very pretty male spider who had hooked up once with a female!
The picture in the ad is MY snake. The one I have sitting in my rack at this moment!! The one that weighs 330g (well, 327, he pooped). So, it certainly appears he's trying to sell a snake he does not have.
That ad, which is still running, is dated Jan 27. I have no idea if he posted the ad with the idea that he could resell the snake to pay me back, or if he is trying to just scam someone. How could I know, since the guy does not answer my emails or call me? It looks bad though.
And, the one thing I do know is that snake weighs 330g! My scales are correct. I put the entire box and packing materials and snakes on my scale and it measured exactly the same as the postage label on the package read.
What do I want to resolve this? I want either my $1,000 back - or a full refund (with me getting the money FIRST and then sending back the animals). I do not trust this man anymore.
If you are considering buying from Joe, I would have to say...I would only make a transaction IN PERSON. Joe may be an alright guy....but at this point I'm kind of doubting that. I certainly would not believe any weight he gave me on any animal.
Joe, if you are reading this - please do what is right and send me my refund. Send it all and I'll send your snakes back immediately - with a brand new, handy, dandy, digital scale
. Or, send me the thousand and at least make good on what you told both me and Ralph you would do.
