In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Hello everyone,

Two weeks ago I answered a fauna add from Joe Goodnough of FIRSTBALLMORPHS for a 586 g spider and two large "1200 to 1300g" females - the price was 5200.

I checked on here and there were no posts about Joe either good or bad. he seemed like an ok guy, so we agreed on 5000 for the group. He told me he was going to ship the animals DHL. Then, after he shipped them, he told me he shipped them USPS. ACK!!! But, the animals did arrive safe and sound on Wed Jan 26.

One small problem though. The "586g proven breeder spider" tipped my digital scale at 330! This was a major issue for me because the whole reason I bought the spider is that I have ten huge girls sitting here that I intended to use on another project this year. A 330g boy, even if it did hook up once (which at this point I highly doubt), was not going to do the job for me. Joe knew exactly why I was purchasing the spider and how I wanted to use him, by the way.

And, those two 1200g girls? They weigh 535 and 721. I'm thinkin' they might not lay eggs this year!

Immediately I emailed Joe and told him they had arrived safely, and the spider was pretty, but telling him about the huge size disparity. I also emailed him pictures of all three snakes on my digital scale reading the weight.

He wanted to send me a few more "big girls" to make up for it, initially saying he had a faulty scale. I told him no number of girls would make up for this, GIRLS I HAD! What I needed was a breeding spider. I suggested three resolutions. 1) He refund my full amount and I send back the snakes 2) He give me a partial refund - I suggested 1200, and I keep them, 3) He let me borrow his adult male spider for the season and I would give it back with a baby, and I would keep this animal for next year and he would keep the money.

A few phone calls ensued. Joe kept insisting that this male had indeed bred a female. On Friday the 28th I agreed to put the male with a female over the weekend "just to see." and that we would talk again Monday evening Jan 30. He also agreed to refund me $1,000 if I kept the animals. (He told Ralph Davis the same thing when Ralph talked to him about this deal.)

Over the weekend I had decided it seemed really unlikely I would get the full amount back, and it was a pretty snake, so I tried repeatedly to get ahold of him by phone Monday and Tuesday. He didn't pick up or answer emails. So, on Tuesday I wrote him the following email:

Hi Joe,

Since we haven't made contact by phone, I wanted to let you know what I am thinking. I went back and forth alot about this, because while he is a very nice animal, he's not what was described to me (and neither are the two girls). He has not eaten or showed any interest in girls - of course he is still settling in.

Part of me thinks I should just send them back (with a new digital scale, "on me"), since it seems that you doubt what I have been saying about their weights. You could refund my money and try to sell him for what you feel he is worth. Then, you would not feel like I am somehow taking advantage of you. If you want to go this route, that's fine with me - just start the process of getting my money back to me and I will ship them.

However, I am willing to keep him if you refund the $1,000 you offered by the end of the week, in full. He is a pretty animal and should make a nice breeder next year.

Please let me know what you want to do right away.

Thanks, Christy

I'm sure you all know the rest of the story. I have emailed and called at least once a day. This guy is nowhere to be found. At least he WAS nowhere to be found until my husband happened to check out Faunaclassifieds today. Joe had placed an add for an adult spider for sale and a "450 g" very pretty male spider who had hooked up once with a female!
The picture in the ad is MY snake. The one I have sitting in my rack at this moment!! The one that weighs 330g (well, 327, he pooped). So, it certainly appears he's trying to sell a snake he does not have.

That ad, which is still running, is dated Jan 27. I have no idea if he posted the ad with the idea that he could resell the snake to pay me back, or if he is trying to just scam someone. How could I know, since the guy does not answer my emails or call me? It looks bad though.

And, the one thing I do know is that snake weighs 330g! My scales are correct. I put the entire box and packing materials and snakes on my scale and it measured exactly the same as the postage label on the package read.

What do I want to resolve this? I want either my $1,000 back - or a full refund (with me getting the money FIRST and then sending back the animals). I do not trust this man anymore.

If you are considering buying from Joe, I would have to say...I would only make a transaction IN PERSON. Joe may be an alright guy....but at this point I'm kind of doubting that. I certainly would not believe any weight he gave me on any animal.

Joe, if you are reading this - please do what is right and send me my refund. Send it all and I'll send your snakes back immediately - with a brand new, handy, dandy, digital scale :). Or, send me the thousand and at least make good on what you told both me and Ralph you would do.

For all interested parties, this fellow is:

He posts on Fauna as FIRSTBALLMORPHS and on Reptibid as BALLS2THEWALLS

Thanks for reading everyone. I'm open to advice here.

It sucks you didn't get what you paid for but I have to question trying to breed new animals without some form of quarantine. I hope that you get some form of resolution to your deal but it doesn't sound like thats going to happen.

Judgement call - I had given the animal a thorough looking over, and was trying to do all I could to resolve the situation. The spider is healthy, that's not the problem.

I knew somebody would make your comment, at least it's over with :).

Christy,
First off, IMO, what you do with animals that you pay for, whether you breed them ASAP, quarantine them, or use them for pillows, is not even remotely the issue. As you descibe things, and without a contradictory rebuttal from Joe, does paint him in a poor light. Hopefully he will straighten things out rapidly, and be able to go with one of the two hoped-for options. It would be nice if he contacted you and gave you accurate information about how he can fix things, to include the likelihood that he does not have the money available to refund you right now, and at least you moved forward with a proper understanding. It sounds like he wants to make things right, just hit a couple of "snags", and maybe needs to get his better judgement working again. Good luck. Oh ..... I doubt his scale was broken too!

Hello Chamco,

The only reason I went public with this at this time was today I saw the fauna ad advertising the same animal I now have. I didn't want another person to be drawn into this problem.

I believed all along that Joe wanted to make things right - until he stopped returning my calls and emails. When that happens, it gets hard to keep believing that the person is well-intentioned.

He told me he was going to use the funds to buy some land. Maybe he bought the land without waiting to see if I was satisfied, and now has no money to return to me. I really don't know. To me it does not bode well that even in the second ad he misrepresented the weight of the animal.

He also never contacted me to say he was going to try to find another buyer so I could get my money back.

Thanks for the support,

Christy

Christy,
I agree wholeheartedly with your take on the unfolding events, and do not question your motivation to come here now. The causes for concern abound. I am sure that we all hope that Joe will take the necessary steps to keep this from getting any worse. Sometimes a BOI post gets quick action towards a solution, and other times it can harden people against pursuing a solution. With well-meaning folks who suffered a hardship or lapse in judgement, it is almost always the former. With the bums, the latter. He seems to have gotten himself in a pickle here. I didn't really think that they were for use as a pillow anyway.

Christy,

If it were me under the same situation I'd want my money back and the snake returned as you did not receive what you paid for! If you paid via credit card you may have some recourse against this guy.

Also, it's not very reputable to sell animals that you don't even have!......(some have been outed right here on the BOI).

Just as a side note it would be nice if there were some type of industry related "do not buy" list which would list all of the people who were NOT reputable. Once you were put on the do not buy list all of the reptile related websites would be notified and that name would be blocked from using the classified and forum system. In effect this would clean up the industry a bit if you could get all the reptile related classified systems onboard. That way if you are shady you'd have a very hard time scamming people.

Good luck!
Regards,
Corey

Christy,
It is unfortunate that there are those that misrepresent what they are selling, whether it is intentional or otherwise. At the very least you have some healthy and good looking balls. I understand and agree with your position entirely. You appear to be a reasonably person and I bet a little communication with Joe would go a long way.

Joe,
Contact Christy and work out a solution that satisfies the both of you. I am certain you both can come to an agreement. Don't let this spin out of control and damage your reputation and future sales. It's still early. Jump on this and get it done. Art Klass

It’s obvious that you need to find a solution to this as you did not get what you paid for. Regrettably I have yet to find one business (reptiles or other) that will refund your money first and you can return the merchandise later. In general it doesn’t work that way. Having said this I agree with you, there’s no way I would say the animals first, I would probably just keep them and ask for the compensation. After all you are going to be one season behind schedule. One other thing, borderline with semantics, when an animal is labeled “proven” it refers in general that it has produced young not that it has bred. At 300+ grams that animal never produced offspring.

Hope you can work something out.

Regards

I guess he has nothing to say......

I posted on his ad, that way others will know that there is a thread about the snake he is trying to sell.

Uh...am I blind, or did he pull his ad? I saw it this morning, but it appears to be all gone now....

Nope, it is still there, click on the underlined "AD" in Christy's post #5

Cathy pointed something out which I should have caught. The ad you have linked Christy is from January 27, 2006. He has not taken it down or posted a sold sign on it, it is not a new ad. If he made any changes on the ad(wording, price, etc.), I believe it would have popped back up in the classified ad. Thanks Cathy. You are not missing anything, it is just old.

My guess is Joe doesn't have the cajones to post. That may mean he has to give a refund, something he is probably in no position to do. Did I miss it, but where is he from?
