In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Help, newbie with a problem?

Hi, we are pretty brand new to leos and we have a problem! I got a "breeding colony" of leos in trade for bearded dragons. We got 10 leos, 7 of which turned out to be males.

One of the females is our current problem. Rita is a high yellow normal, pretty girl, she was agreed to be female by three local leo breeders.

When we got them, we placed Rita and another female in a big tank with the male (since they were all of the same breeding colony and supposedly proven) I never saw any breeding activity, in fact the only thing I saw was the male biting Rita and barking at her. After a while, we found a big open raw slice on Ritas tail, we assumed she had been bitten badly, not sure by whom, (probably the male), so we separated her out to heal. Around the same time the other female started to loose weight so she was separated out as well and placed with Rita, she continued to deteriorate until we separated her out completely (she's better now)

Meanwhile we had two juvies in a tank together that got along very well, never had any problems. It was determined that the smaller of the two was a male eventually so we separated them out. Rita was looking good, and the other female had grown up, so we placed her and the other female together.

After a while we noticed white things on Ritas head, the more I looked at them, the more I thought bite marks. Then yesterday I noticed a scab, and she had a bloody claw, and tail as well. There are no marks on the other female. I sat and watched the two for a while, Rita stalked up to Dicey and vibrated her tail. So we separated them out again assuming they were fighting. I looked Rita over again and noticed her pores are bigger and looking waxy, but she has no hemipene bulges. She also has a wide head. My first thought is I have a female that was supposed to be temperature sexed as a male? What do they call them, hot females or something?

So my question is what the heck is going on here? Rita is right smack dab in the middle of every problem we have had so far. Our male obviously did not like her, (he was ok with the other female), she keeps getting hurt with other geckos that do not have a history of fighting with each other, is it silly to assume she is picking fights and keeps on loosing? We wanted to breed her eventually!
ACK!
HELP!

Sarah

Might want to change name from Rita to Rito. That's a male. A hot female wouldn't have pores at all. They've been discribed as late bloomers for breeding, but don't have poors with wax at all. I wonder if there are no bluges if he had been prolapsed and both hemipenes removed.

Do you have a picture of Rita/Rito's vent area that you can post?

Make that 8 of 10 are male, and that's not a breeding colony. I would be real POed at the person if I were the one that traded for misrepresenting this group.

yeah we were a little PO'd I traded 10 baby dragons and 1.1 subadult dragons that were both real nice. The biggest reason for the uneven trade was my boyfriend really wanted some leos, and I really needed to open up space in the dragon colony. I spent almost $50 on UPS overnight shipping and the other guy sent his USPS for $22 second day and told me it was overnight.

Anyways, here (I hope) are some pictures

Thanks!

Sarah

well, i feel like a first class idiot. Out of 10 leos we only have three keepers?
no wonder he wanted to get rid of them.

Sarah

Looks like a male to me. But the bulges look weird, sorta deflated. Maybe he did lose his members or born without? Or smaller.
:)

I'm so sorry that we had to tell you he was a male, and make it even worse. Was this a trade with some one on Fauna? I'd take it to the BOI and warn everyone.

WHo did you get them from? I would be mad too. Jezze and they all have to be kept separate. How many did he say were male when you did the trade?

ugh

well this guy found my add here on fauna, but I dont know if he is active here. I even asked about him on the BOI, and was told to expect quality animals but he always ships USPS even though he was asked not too. If anyone wants his name, email me privately. I will think about the BOI. I hate starting fights, especially when I have not discussed this with him at all.

Here's the thing, he said he's trade me all his leos for my dragons, and I kept on asking him how many leos and what ratio, and he kept on refering me back to his website available section. He was getting out of leos entirely he said, and needed the room immediately. I do remember looking at the website thinking there was more males than I wanted but I figured I could sell the extras. When we got them I sold, traded and gave away five males. We kept a baldy male as our main breeder. One we were not so sure about, and he was nice looking so we kept him back and he's a male too. Right now we only have the five

I think I remember seeing someone in the BOI that was shipping USPS. ARRGGGG

Sarah,

It's a shame to hear that this has happened to you. Unfortunately, we ran into some problems with our animals from this seller much later on down the road as well. I will gladly go to the BOI with you on this character if the need is there and retract any good statements I may have said about him. Just say the word.

Amazingly enough, this was the same reason he gave for selling the group of New Guinea Frilled Dragons to me at such a cheap price. In my naivety I actually believed him.

Wow!

Do you think I should? I mean, I have only emailed him once since I got the leos and that was to tell him he should be more aware of how he is shipping them, his story was he ships USPS overnight every time and never has a problem, this time must have been a fluke. LOL!

I'm so non confrontational, hehe

Sarah

ask one of the more confrontal people to do it hten. if it was me id be all over this guy because i have lack of patience for mistakes with my animals. i already had one run in this year that didnt please me i nthe slightest.

I personally would speak up. If yu don't he will screw someone else. I just hate people like this. I see no excuse for his having not told you about this male. And his lack of abiity to be honest about the male female ratio...keep sending you to his website....It was a simpe question which he could have answered very easily. I would speak up or have someone do it for you. I see there are plenty willing. I would first email him and make him aware how upset you are.I am fair I would give him warning and then I would go to the BOI with it!!
Robin

I agree, he's just going to keep doing it if people don't stand up and say something.

I took a look at your site, and the ones you kept are very nice, too bad Rita is a Rito. :(
