In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Thanks. New readers should be aware that the product was renamed "Degei" in January of 2005 and continues under that branding.
Thank you.
-Damon Theis.

This is a year old, but I think with new herpers entering the market that it's a good idea to be aware of the variety of software out there that helps us keep track of our herps.

I used Metzcal for 2 years, then but it has crashed and my back up is not working.

I then purchased Degi but it appears much to complicated and time consuming. I am now investigating a gecko software, it appears to be simple to use and has a variety of applications.

Actually, the "thread" is over 3 yrs old. :)
I honestly can't understand why you think Degei is too complicated and time consuming. Especially compared to what you were using. Degei was created with breeder input to be as simple as possible as well as have the data input be streamlined.
Yes, other products are simpler, but do no where near what Degei is capable of. If you have any specific questions or need help, feel free to email me.

I was counting from the last post, not the first. :)

So was Vision Breeders Racks created with breeder input (I still GAVE it away), but it is not effective for the smaller breeder (or one just starting out) without a "facility." It has too many air holes and is meant for an environment that already has humidity controls.

This is NOT an attempt to down your product. But like Kingsnake and the BOI..it seems somewhat top heavy, which makes it (imo) a bit unfriendly userwise for those that need a simple application.

I'll send you an email later. I have tried several times to enter information into the software that I purchased. I have given up each time..but then I am not a computer wizard and am capable of pressing the wrong buttons at the wrong time.

Nope. :)
Thanks for the link though!

It's really disappointing that no one makes this sort of software that's cross-compatible. I'd love to use Degei, but I'm SOL.

I find Degei to be a great product and very easy to use. I dont find it complicated in the slightest, I find it thorough. I would recommend it to anyone no matter how big or small they are.

I don't know how old your Mac is, but if you have one with an Intel processor, then you could always install a copy of XP with Bootcamp, and then either use your system as a duel boot system, or run XP within Leopard (or whatever version of Mac OS you're running) using either VMware Fusion or Parallels. It works really well. :)

I couldn't agree more. Quite frankly, I find it kind of hard to believe that someone would call Degei either complicated or time consuming. It's very easy to use in that it's simple enough for the hobbiest, but advanced enough for the serious breeder to manage really large collections. What other product on the market allows the flexibility and speed of bar code scanning? (Of course, that's the professional version of Degei...which is obviously a little more expensive. ;) ) It's without question the best product in it's class on the market...no matter what size keeper you happen to be.

Yes, I know I can do that. But that's such a pain for a single program. Then I'd also have to buy XP (well, I guess Vista now) ;) I also can't install Leopard without a serious upgrade on my Laptop anyway (I'm running 10.3.9 on a PowerBook G3 - the "FireWire Pismo").

Actually, looking again at my list for upgrading this machine, I can't get the right kind of processor to run Leopard at all. I'm stuck with what I got unless I buy a new laptop (and the price of new Macs makes me grimace).

I did it. ;) I really have no other reason to run XP on this machine other than to run Degei...it's worth the effort to set it up. ;)

Actually, you don't need Leopard to run Bootcamp (although Bootcamp is packaged for free with Leopard)...all that matters is that you have a Mac with an Intel processor. Just search for Bootcamp on Apple's site, and you should be able to get all of the info you need. I'm pretty sure that Bootcamp is still available as a free download.

Which apparently you don't...so I guess my point was moot. ;)

I wasn't quite sure how old your machine was until I looked it up. ;)

It really ticks me off that I can't upgrade my processor. I had a G4 back in 2002-2004 and got rid of it because it was such a piece of junk (went through 3 hard drives and 2 mother boards within those 2 years), so I "downgraded" to this one and LOVE it...Not a SINGLE problem and it runs all of my design software smooth as silk. :D Plus it's heavy duty, I could throw it across the room and it not break (not that I plan on it). :)

I know what you mean. This is actually my first Mac that I've ever bought (it's a Mac Book), and I LOVE this damn thing! It's the best computer that I've ever owned...and I've owned a lot of them. I had to find a way to run Degei on this thing because quite frankly, I haven't even touched my other laptop since I bought this back in August...not once. Generally speaking, I don't throw my laptops though...so I really don't know if it would break or not. ;)

I haven't gotten the bar coding hardware set up on this machine yet (I'm going to try to do it in a couple weeks when I get a day off), but Damon said that it won't be a problem. :)

I dunno, Jay. I don't think it was a complete waist of time to look for it...I did find free 3-d solitare to install on my computer...I'm so easily amused... :D
Ohhhhhhh! Thanks for the link! I'll try it out in a little bit. :D

What do you have? One of the new models?
I know the G4 I had (when they first came out with the "iBooks" in 2002) was fragile as heck. I think the new models are still made that way. This G3, though a dinosaur compared to the new models, is tough as nails. It's a bit heavy, but I'm not worried about dropping it and cracking the case.

You use the bar coding, huh? I thought that would be pretty cool to have with the amount of animals I have. Would take a LOT less time for record keeping I'd imagine! Maybe one day I'll be able to afford a new Mac (I'd probably go with an iMac, just keep it on my desk in the reptile room) and get Degei to run. :)

I have the new Mac Book (the black one) with an extra gig of ram. It's sweet. :)

Barcoding is expensive, but it's the way to go if you have several hundred animals to keep track of. There's just no way to keep up with all of the data entry otherwise. ;)
