My wife and I have purchased in cash 1.75 stacks of cages from Jim SINCE THIS THREAD STARTED. I also just built his new website and was credited 2 divided 48" cages for that.
Seriously? My cage stacks have jaws dropping when people enter our living room. I was wrong about one thing. Jim does eventually offer a discount when a customer buys in stacks (I am surprised he didn't correct me earlier in the thread). He also offered me a small discount for sending a cashier's check instead of using paypal. I have spent, in total now since SEPT 2010, WELL OVER $3,000 in cash with Jim at this point and still only praise here. I also have had a chance over the last few weeks to communicate with him much more frequently... and not a problem at all. When we hit a kink, we worked past it. Never did we question each other's integrity of course so why should I expect any issues?
He accidently drilled a hole for a thermostat on both sides of one of my cages and he called me to ask if I minded because if I did he would make another rear panel. I didn't mind. When I later mentioned that I accidently ruined one of my perches from a cage I bought last SEPT, he said, "Why are you just mentioning this?" I said, "Well it was my fault for not reading the instructions." He said, "I will replace that perch when I ship out your next order." That's the type of experience I am used to when I "take a risk" with Jim S. The cages look great. My snakes are healthy and active. And my wait for cages with him is....oh....1 1/2 to 2 1/2 weeks for the cages instead of 8 weeks with someone else. I ordered some snake hides from one of Jim's competitors 3 weeks ago.......still waiting on them to arrive and the "lead time" will probably be 4-6 weeks before I get what I ordered. (I have proof of that purchase if anyone wants to see it but then I would be giving away the name of the other business and I would prefer to stay focused on PVC Cages right now. Plus who would doubt that lead time? It's pretty normal for other builders isn't it?)
My experiences with PVC Cages have been smooth. Even working with Jim on a small project: smooth. Also keep in mind that when you do business with Jim, you are also doing some business with Laura too. Not sure what else Laura does but I know for sure that she packages the cages and when you see the detail involved in that job you have to credit her for such detailed work that makes it feel like Christmas when the boxes are being opened.
So one more time. Is Jim a risk? Perhaps anyone can be. But when I do business I go off what my previous experiences have been, and what others say as well (I admit it). But Kevin, how many cages have you purchased from Jim and if you haven’t...why not stop with acting like you are some authority on something you shouldn't be trying to get the last word in on? I am sure you are a great guy Kevin. But there really is a time and place to put your two cents in. I CAN and I AM....and based on real experience. Laying my money down, opening boxes. Putting cages together. Looking at them every day. Cleaning them. Watching my snakes start to breed in them. This is what I know. I am happy. My snakes are healthy. My wallet is happy.
I have noticed that when people question the integrity of breeders on Fauna, they are not always very nice. Fine. But when I give those same breeders my money (and I have started to send money their way recently), somehow the snakes seem fine and no attitude from the sellers. Let's let the members of this community continue to decide about these breeders and cage builders for themselves. When a bad story comes up? Let's listen. If we have real experiences to refute or support a claim, let’s speak up. And when we don't...let's keep ourselves in check a little, step back, and let those with the experience and the spent cash talk a little more.
And yes, Josh and I are even starting to work together on projects and we almost daily touch base with updates, advice, or cheers. Why? We moved on. Now we get to enjoy the excitement of what happens IN the cages.
