    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Yeah, this message board software is very powerful, and with lots of bells and whistles already in place. Plus I have paid my programmer to put in lots of other bells and whistles as well. Heck, I haven't even explored every possible option here myself, so I am constantly finding something new. Plus every once in a while my programmer will implement something new he came up with himself. For instance, that yellow banner message on the front page of this forum, is one of his inventions.

But this is new to so many people, and not everyone is overly computer literate, so it will take some time for people to get used to this structure. But the tools are here whenever they want to learn how to use them. The people ARE coming to this site, so if they make the effort, I am sure it will prove to be worthwhile for them. Like the saying goes: "A dollar saved is a dollar earned."

And let's face it, if the ads are placed here, people WILL come to see them.
 
I think the best thing about fauna is its free. if the site needs money i belive there is plenty of room for banner ads, each specific to the forum you are viewing, like on king snake. this is the best site around, those guys at kingsnake are greedy, i meen with sites like fauna and reptibid i dont understand why people need to pay for classified adds. king snake has to make a profite from all the ads on there site.
 
I've read every single reply to this topic and have seen valid points from all sides. My opinion is black and white.....


Regardless of how much money KS makes you or costs you, doubling your rates on dedicated and loyal customers is price gouging. Granted they can do what they want, you don't have to pay, it's cheap advertisement, their traffic rate is phenominal.....it doesn't matter. To me it's a simple case of business ethics and morals. To pass on their increased cost to us is one thing but to bend you over because they can is bull<font color=red>[bleep]</font> and I personally will be very hard pressed to renew when the time comes.

I'll stick with the better man and advertise where ethics and rules are equally applied to everyone. If the format of this site can be changed a bit and arranged to say pet owners can pay $5.00 for forum use, advertisers pay $XX for full use and the overall look be made more flashy and eye catching I'll gladly pay to advertise here. Offer web domains, web page hosting, photo gallary storage, web page building how to clinics....anything to improve husbandry and sales for the pet keeper and the business owner. Spend your money where you wish, I'll call no one wrong in doing so but for principle alone I'll not pay it because I refuse to be led around by the balls.

It's gouging, it's screwing customers and to say the least it's a horrible time to do such a thing with the economy as bad as it is for everyone.

We spiff things up and increase traffic, there's not a single reason this site can't be major competition for KS. After all market price is set and controlled by the amount of competition and service demand.......we all know the demand for sales and advertising is there!

OK, I really hate it when I feel stupid.

How would my charging $5 for forum use and more $$ for "full use" make this site more attractive for advertisers? I feel like I am really missing something here that maybe everyone else can see but me.

And as for the overall look and flashiness, heck, I have always been a "meat and potatoes" and "plain vanilla" kind of guy. I prefer content and substance over flash and whizbang gimics. Do you all want me to experiment with the color set here? I think I can come up with a color scheme that would burn out most retinas....... :)

Seriously, my attitude about this is that the internet is not like a roadside display. You don't try to catch the eye of people driving by to get them to come inside. The internet is more like mining for gold. You just click on website URL's, take a look at what is inside, and if you find something of value, you bookmark the site and come back again for more. My philosophy is to provide value and interest. Information that is of value and a service that is invaluable. I believe I am providing a nesting area for the continuation of our hobby, interest, and business. A side effect of this, hopefully, will be that my own business will grow and prosper as a direct result of what happens here.

Although this can be a major headache at times, I usually enjoy what I am doing here. Sometimes I don't, I admit, but for the most part, I am taking pride in the fact that nearly everyone here is helping out to try to make OUR industry a better place. And I should CHARGE people for their help in doing that just does not fit into my scheme of things. I ask people to pay for banner ads to help support the site, and those people who occasionally will make donations are appreciated beyond words. But beyond that, I am satisfied with the way things are.

But, if there comes a time when I find that I am physically unable to keep up my corn snake breeding business, well yes, then I will have to reevaluate this situation. Because I could not afford to keep this all running without the income I get from my SerpenCo business. In such a case, the choices might very well boil down to I either make this site something that can contribute towards paying the bills, or I just cut it loose and get a job at Walmart.

Heck, I'm still puzzling over how to make this site more flashy and eye catching.... Someone help me out here....... :dunce:
 
i know this site is about king snake, but what do you guys think about for ever sale you make due to fauna.com you make a donation you feel is suficent for the amount the sale was? i personaly am going to start doing this. there is a lot of money to be mad for chargeing the use of a site like this, and to keep it free meens this site realy belongs to all of us and all of us need to help support it and make it even better.

If you ever need artwork, and bells and whistles, I think enough people here including myself have tha ability to do so, I for one would take a pleasure in doing it for free, My payment is satisfaction and portfolio, I have a company that promotes my site to hundreds of sites and search engines a day, its 20 bucks a month? The listings really cool, I think I found them on doteasy.com? they have linked me to millions of engines all over the world, and keep me informed on whom they do so. its incredible really.

Flashy, unfortuneatly is very important. sad yes, but very true. When I am flipping through the www and see a well designed and visually attractive site, I go there! I think I recognize value, and time, and to have a dynamic visual , intelligent site, it takes more than logic, it takes creativity, and passion.

People that come here love it here. I think you do desere some income from this. And its more humbling that you dont want it. That in my opinion will make it more valueble because of your repect for the site and its users. Now for the sake of incentive, you get lets say half of ks clientel over here , they begin posting images, ads , classifieds, etc. and you charge them less for everything , and they know that its regulated by mods that exist but by us the dangerous public.

Its a powerful opportunity, Your so close to blowing this site into something ks will dread . We are here for you and respect you and what you have given us. If you need concept, artwork, painings , illustrations, computer art, let me know and I will do it gladly. as far as building web pages errr well I am missing my thumbs and cant manipulate the keyboard well enough to do that. lol-just kidding.

my friend and I worked this up to give my consumers a level of professionalism that was far beyond the daily toil, it may be a bit much but it has great ratings.
 
Well, I am always open for suggestions, but I am probably more picky than some people would want to deal with. I would lean towards something more conservative and subtle, attempting to lend credence that quality if being offered and not just breads and circuses. The idea is to offer information. Anything that detracts from that basic offering will be a hindrance to people trying to find the information they are looking for.

Also, although vBulletin is very powerful and flexible, there will be design limits that will have to be lived with. Anything that would destabilize the functioning of the entire program will be avoided at all costs.

I did play around with trying to put in some background graphics not too long ago, but the results weren't all that satisfactory. Of course, time is an issue as well. Taxes are breathing down my neck and I haven't even taken the first step to work on them....

Anyway, with that in mind, I would like to have a new logo designed for this site. I think the one I now have is rather dated and I think something better could be come up with. If anyone is willing to take a stab at that, I would appreciate that effort. But bear in mind that I cannot tell you what I will like. It's one of those things that I will just know it when I see it.

Maybe we can run a contest?
 
Some enzine websites offer full access packages, partial access packages ect ect.........these rates would generate revenue to pay for advanced and updated web work, also make it worth your while to run this. Advertisers would be charged rates which reflected it as an absorbable cost and the average user could pay a small yearly fee for minimal use.........basically for no other reason than to generate revenue and to weed out the lowlifes that occasionally have the ability to post garbage and post it free of charge.

Make sense?

How about asking your programmer to set perameters, Does he want it in Flash, Quark, Photoshop, Illustrator, PSDs,Jpgs, etc and of coarse dimentions. I would think jpgs would be the easiest, as most computers have that ability. Set a deadline for entering, I think around a month, month and a half is more than enough time, set a topic page and freeze it, at the last date, it could be polled and selected? Im in- d

NOooooo!!! Please don't!! I like the greens. They're easy on the eyes, not distracting and pretty. Those sites with flashing, spinning do-dads make me crazy...or those ones with the java script pictures or words that follow your mouse around, blah!!

I really like the contest idea, for a new logo! That's wonderful!

And, I agree with Vince...please make the wanted ads seperate again. Now that they're al mixed up, it's hard to tell sometimes if someone is looking to buy or selling something. Plus you have to sift through a bunch of ads to get to the ones you want to see.
 
the colors and general format of this page is great, i dont think anyone would mind more banners or paid ads to help fund the site, everything is tip top shape, maybe on the feedback part you can have more space for review. and on the search dont limit the words to 4 letters. just a few things to put on the bottom of the list. also if money is an issue , why not have paid contestes for donated herps and/or supplys?? or live auctions for donated herps/supplys? photo contest , or something of that nature to raise money for server bills??? one of the main draws of fauna is its free, everything is free, and its great.
 
Concerning the separation of the FOR SALE and WANTEDS sections, I would like to point out that I set up a poll about this issue a while back for feedback when I was originally contemplating doing this:

Notice the lack of participation. As in many other arenas, those who vote make the rules.

One of the complaints I hear is that there are TOO many forums available. I figured this was one way to help reduce that problem. Obviously I cannot please everyone, but unless that is an earthquake proportion level of opposition to my consolidating those forums, I am not going to take my time to try to separate them again. That would be a real pain in the butt to do.

As far as the logo is concerned, I think a static image would be best. I like a classy professional look, and don't recall ever seeing an animated design that I would like as my own logo. Banners are one thing, logos are another. So I would say a standard JPG file would probably be best. If this can somehow be incorporated into the main front page of this site, that would be great, but I'm not sure how easily that could be done without scrapping the entire front page. Something that I would be reluctant to do right now (taxes and breeding season are both right around the corner). Something integrated as a logo and backdrop for the entire site would be real nice, but again, this would probably have to fit the existing layout rather than my changing the layout to fit a new design. vBulletin does have a library of skins available, so if someone is fluent with these, then I could get my programmer involved to work with you.

Yeah, I kind of like the green theme myself and would have to have an incredibly strong reason to change that.

As I mentioned I have no clue what I would like to change to, but I think I will know it if I see it. This design you see now was one I saw on another site and asked my programmer to emulate it as much as possible. I'm not sure, but as quickly as he did it, it would not surprise me in the least if he did the other one himself. This guy is a EXPERT with vBulletin. He actually did another site for me (FaunaBooks.com) which is highly modified vBulletin code utilizing the FaunaClassifieds database and base coding.

He admits he is not an artist nor a website designer, but I think coupled with an artist, some interesting things may be possible.

I do also like the green, I envision a splash page, nothing to fancy smansy but a bang in your face image with a strong catologue, note ks or chondroweb, although chondroweb has mechanical difficulties sometimes, its a bang in your face image and although its not to outrageous, it does spell it out. I will do some photoshop mocs, put them hear to get the ball rolling.

Well, then. I guess I owe you an apology. I shouldn't have complained when you asked for opinions ahead of time and I missed my chance! LOL! So, sorry about that! ;) I missed it that thread altogether and I wish I had seen it. I tend to come every day for a while, take a couple months off, then come back every day again. (Usually the attitude on the BOI is too "ugly" for me and when I get burned out, I go away for a little while.) This might have been how I missed the thread...unless it was somewhere other than the BOI? I totally agree with those who have complained about too many forums...that could have been how I missed that poll too! LOL!
But, had I seen it, I would have voted no because people do not entitle their threads to make it clear before openning the message. I used to enjoy perusing the wanted and for sale section but now that they're mixed, I find it irritating that I don't know if the item is for sale or wanted. Some people don't make it clear in their ad either! LOL!
 
Many people were posting the wrong ads in those separated sections anyway. I got tired of moving them. And realistically, most people wanting to sell something would likely check the WANTEDS section anyway, and visa versa.

Maybe if classified ad postings increase substantially I will consider separating them again, but for now I don't see the need to do that.

I think many people still don't know of the usefulness of the New Posts feature, so I thought I'd make mention of it again.
Log in and on the main forum page:
http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/
click "View new posts" just under your name at the upper right and it will display every post that has been made since your last visit to the boards.
Using this saves the daunting task of browsing the entire site and keeps you from missing interesting threads that may be posted in areas you don't frequent.
 
Oh goodness!! I never realized that I could do that...what a great feature!! I was looking everywhere manually and sometimes I would miss whole forums altogether and now that I just did what you said, it will be so much easier!! Thank you so much, Clay!! :)

Those of you who are gecko breeders and do not want to spend big bucks for advertising, should know there are ways to advertise for relatively cheap on high traffic web sites.
