• Responding to email notices you receive.
    **************************************************
In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

  • IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ!! About the Google Adsense ads being displayed

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Midnight EST, 09/21/10 - server upgrade

Well once I noticed I couldn't view fauna without being logged in I thought there it was some sort of glitch. I cleared everything from my downloaded history, cookies, cache etc and then pm'd Rich and he pointed me to this thread.

Some of the slower folks are not gonna to be able to put 2 & 2 together so if you don't want to respond to these inquires you may want to consider putting up a notice to guest that they need to be a logged in member to access Fauna.

Well, when such a viewer comes to this site, they see a LARGE notice at the top of the screen about them being unregistered or not logged in. Then when they go to a thread they get another such notice. I think that should be sufficient notice for most people. For those that it is NOT sufficient, well, sorry, but I just cannot put rubber baby buggy bumpers on every sharp corner here.

I noticed you done that.

That is not the message she is receiving.
Her response is that she has delete cookies, files, etc, restarted, tried both IE & FireFox, and done a system restore (actually, I think there were a few other things that I've forgotten).
This is the only site she's had difficulty accessing, and she can't access it from her desktop or laptop (she's tried the laptop on different networks, as well). She can get on with her phone.

If she can do a screen shot of the exact screen she gets when she tries to get on the site, that might help. There is no way possible to track any sort of problem that is being as vague as she is about the symptoms. Having her IP address might be instructive as well, since she is very likely using a different IP address with her cell phone.

Obviously it is not a widespread problem, otherwise people would be beating my door down about it.

I believe i am having the same problem, i can not get on the site at all using any computer in my house with Firefox or IE, right now i am going through a free proxy and am able to get on the site just fine. when i try to get on the site i get a timeout error. i will take a screen shot and post below. i am also not able to access consnakes.com as i believe you are on same server.

i have tried to release and renew my ip address and i cleared my DNS cache.

The only thing that appears to be feasible at this point is that the firewall in my server has identified the affected IP addresses as being sources of problems. I believe that ISPs will swap around IP addresses fairly often (as evidenced when I check IP locations auditing new registrations and see that the same IP address can reference MANY different physical locations over time), so quite likely IP addresses that at one time tried to gain unwelcome entry to the server have since been transferred and now legitimate users may be using those IP addresses.

Trying to figure out a way to resolve this issue. Seems kind of goofy, based on the evidence, for any security routine to ban IPs permanently at the firewall. But that very well might be what is happening.

So much like many of the SPAM safeguards on the internet now, this sort of thing could be a clearcut case of the "cure" killing the patient just as effectively as the original "disease" would,

i just found it odd when it happened, received an email that i had a private message and clicked on the link, got to the site , it loaded , clicked on the PM and got the timeout error. and haven't been able to get back since.

i didn't noticed when i went into my router if my ISP IP address had changed but it could have and i wouldn't know, haven had my server up and running to have been keeping track of it. but your explanation makes sense.

as of right now i can still get to the site through a proxy so i can keep posting and keeping track of threads i have been following so its no big deal , just a bit of a pain.

i thought maybe i had my IP banned for some reason, though i couldn't for the life of me figure out why, i have been on here for a long while just hanging out and reading not posting a whole lot, just recently started posting so i wasn't sure if i inadvertently did something to get me in trouble.

I know the server techs set up some enhanced security options a little while ago, so perhaps the firewall is just a bit TOO protective right now. I'm going to see if they can use a more intelligent design for firewall management. It makes sense to block IPs that are apparently engaging in flooding, but those IPs need to be relinquished from the block after a period of time.

I think I really need to get my head into this server management stuff more. I guess I just haven't gotten bored enough yet in retirement.... ;)

yes, I was just noticing that as well.. the photos and messages I posted and received are now gone.. did we have to a system restore from a few days ago when the site was down today??

soooo, do I need to re-post all of that??

I lost some positive karma. Hopefully everything gets worked out and working smoothly.

I did too. Also, two 50-post pages of a BOI thread that shed some new light on the dispute are gone, and I'm sure everyone who put up or bumped ads in the last day is upset.

Any chance that, now that whatever error occurred has been rolled back, you can recover that data, Rich?

Yeah, me too. That must have been a pretty harsh crash. :(

I'd be really surprised if the missing data can be restored. If it could be, it would have been already. I'm guessing they had to go back a day or so to find a clean back-up.

It seemed to my limited understanding of computers, like a DOS.
A denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. Although the means to carry out, motives for, and targets of a DoS attack may vary, it generally consists of the concerted efforts of a person or people to prevent an Internet site or service from functioning efficiently or at all, temporarily or indefinitely. Perpetrators of DoS attacks typically target sites or services hosted on high-profile web servers such as banks, credit card payment gateways, and even root nameservers. The term is generally used with regards to computer networks, but is not limited to this field, for example, it is also used in reference to CPU resource management.[1] There are two general forms of DoS attacks: those that crash services and those that flood services.[2]

One common method of attack involves saturating the target machine with external communications requests, such that it cannot respond to legitimate traffic, or responds so slowly as to be rendered effectively unavailable. In general terms, DoS attacks are implemented by either forcing the targeted computer(s) to reset, or consuming its resources so that it can no longer provide its intended service or obstructing the communication media between the intended users and the victim so that they can no longer communicate adequately.

maybe that guy wasn't joking when he said someone was buying all the info for fauna.. LOLOL.. j/k

Usually, if it is a system restore.. then no, we won't get that info back.. but it was only a couple days, so hopefully nothing too important was lost :(

Chat also seems to be down.. what.. what.. what do I do now???? a night without fauna chat?? I.. I am lost.. MOMMY.. MOMMMYYYYYY... *cries*
