Buffet's Worst nightmare
First off I am very sorry for your loss. I know first hand how upsetting and frustrating it can be to lose a pet. I generally agree with Matthew here. Reptile medicine is fairly new in veternary practices(as compared with most other animals they treat), and often the meds used werent made for reptiles, so they are not always 100 percent effective. With not enough good vets specializing in herps and not enough good stuff out there to administer anything without testing is crazy, and a waste of your money(not that money comes to mind when trying to save a life). Most of these medications the average vet uses on a reptile was made for a dog or cat, or even in some cases horses, and with snakes haveing a totally different immune system, metabolic rate and just being completely different they can sometimes do more harm then good. Although I agree with you Matthew, you seem to be coming off as blaming her, and while that may not be your intention, thats how I perceived it so perhaps she did as well. She noticed a problem, asked for advice, and took the animal to the vet. There is not much more someone can do. Yes she should have gone to the vet sooner, but at her age my guess is she doesnt drive, and her father did not want to take it there as she mentioned. So I think her getting it there shows she has made a fair effort here. You may not have intended to sound this way Matthew, but like I said from a third party position it came off that way. If I am wrong I do apoligize, but I would hate for her to ignore your sound advice because of the fashion in which it was presented. Have a great week and weekend, Dan M.
