    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Oh and as for the dry season, I know I can do that very easily with the 60W bulb in the lamp I have. Just don't spray the tank very often and let the water evaporate. This in combination with the lamp will have the soil start to dry very slowly and will take perhaps a week or two till it shows signs of being dry. I plan on doing this anyways with my frog so that he has a good rest period this fall and winter.
 
what about a dry season to "cycle " them into breeding???
 
pacman vs. pixie

Ok now, this thread started out "my pacman and giant pixie babies" and as I've been watching it, has headed down the pixie trail!! I have wanted a pacman frog for a long time but living in North Dakota, we only have your basic green, oh once in awhile you'll see an albino... so anyway, I would like to get something a little different and was leaning toward a harlequin fantasy frog or an ornate horned frog.... ( I really like the looks of the ornate horned frog but read where they probably are not for a novice frog keeper as they are more timid-- is this true?) Then I come on here and see this thread and how everybody just LOVES their pixie frogs. Well, now I'm stuck. I would like to know WHY it seems you guys are favoring the pixies over the pacman? I only want to get one, so I want to make sure I get one I can enjoy... so help me out here........ :confused: Thanks
 
I like my pacman frogs, there great. You will be happy either way. I like pixies more because, they eat better IMO, may grow bigger, looks better IMO, hide less IMO. I like there killer tooth like things on there lower jaw. I like the way puff themselves full of air when intimidated. I believe they are more powerfull. I have 4 of them and there personalities are interesting. All my pixies can eat in a separate container. My pacman are a little shyer (they have to feel safe in there cage)as they are more of an ambush predator. I like it when my animals are easy to feed. Remember this is just my opinion and personal experience. When my little guy bit me it was just a little pinch and he quickly let go. I surprised at how big his mouth could open.

pacmans?? This thread was about Pacmans??? Just kidding. I have pacman too!! i will post a pic for you shortly.
 
I love my pacman!!! If anyone would have told me a few months ago that having a pet frog was cool and low maintanence, I would have laughed. My 2 year old gets a kick out of watching him eat and learned how to say "goggy"(froggy) and "all gone" because of him. If you say the goggy hops, so does she. I have had my pacman for about 3 months and he was the size of a half dollar, now he weighs 70 gms. He loves to eat. Does anyone know which sex makes noise? Mine has been starting to make some noises lately. The pixies look cool but there's just something about the pacmans that I just love.

ok, the pixies get larger than the pacman, don't they? I think I've made up my mind, I'm going to stick with my first choice-- the pacman. I decided I want an ornate horned frog, they are a pacman but more colorful than the green or albino. Correct me if I'm wrong, please. Also, I read that they tend to be more timid than a "normal" pacman,, any truth to that?

I believe the males are the vocal ones. 70 grams already, that is gonna be a big one!!! the pac mans also come in more colors and styles. I have an albino argentine horned frog. I would like to get a ornate one as well. Guess I pretty much want a couple of everything!!! Gessh, is there such thing as a herpaholic?? If there is I need to go to herpaholic rehab!!!!

the ornates are very very colorful, especially if you get one of the high red ones!!! those guys are amazing to look at. Let me know if you find any!!

I thought that's what I posted about. I'm not sure when to start it, I know my frog started to hibernate in november/december'ish time. So I'll start the same process like that again.
 
OK i will try to cycle mine then to. Did you see any signs as far as knowing they were going into hibernation. Quit eating?? covering themselves with that mucus film stuff?

Nicolai-- do you think there will be any ornate horned frogs at this show you're going to? (also, are they supposed to be harder to keep because they are more timid than a "regular" pacman?) Also, I just read on a website(don't ask me where) that hormones are used to cycle these frogs into breeding....maybe you can do it naturally...
 
Yeah, my frog puts up his eyelid-like membrane over his eye and just sits in his hole. These frogs can go naturally into hibernation by just making their bedding dry. And that's why I think it's critical for the humidity level of the tank to go down to the 60 range (usually it's high 70's to 80) so that the water from the bedding can evaporate. This was done accidentally last year with my frog because I was at school and I had my father take care of him. My father just kept feeding him steak and didn't spray the tank. I didn't even have a heat lamp at this time and not even an undertank heater. These frogs are very hardy and can withstand abnormal temperatures for quite some time. Anyway, since there was no more water to be sprayed in the tank, the bedding became dry (the colour was a light brown) and the frog got ready to hibernate. He didn't build up a mucus layer over his eyes, I think it takes at least 5 months for that to build up. But this lasted from January to April when I got back from school I was determined to wake him up so I purchased the light fixture and a 60W bulb. My frog went into the water to take off his mucus cover of his skin. I also think it's essential as soon as they come out of hibernation you need to get them eating again. So I put in some live crickets to start up his appetite and it worked.

So to recap:

- Just let the bedding air out naturally, allowing the water to evaporate from it.
- Keep feeding your frog while this is all happening.
- When your frog has his eyelid-like membrane over his eyes and doesnt seem to want to be bothered, I think this indicates he/she is preparing for hibernation.
- You can try feeding your frog in hibernation, but the frog will most likely not eat.
- Just leave him be for a couple of months and monitor his status.
 
I should probably add, just keep the undertank heater underneath his hole during hibernation. Lights and stuff like that may just irritate him during hibernation because when these guys hibernate, they do it in holes where it is dark.

Ha! I just bought two frogs, supposed to be shipped on Monday!! The one is an ornate horned frog(supposed to be, and if it's not, that's ok,too, cuz he's cute) and a fantasy frog C.cranwelli x C.cornuta, I guess. Now just to wait til they get here...

hormones are used to cycle them?? You mean sameboby is giiving them hormones aor they use their own hormones??

I am hoping there will be ornates at the show!!! It would make my daughters day for me to come home with one!!

whoah now, hold the boat!!!! you got a ornate and a fantasy frog?? I wanna see pics when you get those!!! does the fantasy frog have those real high horns????
 
wow, there some good info on that site. You see where it said they sometime hibernate for a year or more. Geesh talk about fat storage!!!
