• Responding to email notices you receive.
    **************************************************
In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

No rules or ruthless enforcement of the rules?

No rules, or strictly enforced rules?

  • To heck with the rules, I just want to be entertained here.

    Votes: 16 5.5%
  • Strictly enforce the rules! Without them, the BOI is worthless.

    Votes: 277 94.5%

  • Total voters

Would the option of reporting the post to the moterator being used more heavily by everyone here create too much mail for the Webslave?

Is that an option for the rules being enforsed more evenly?

Would the Webslave see this as a good thing or would there be too many petty offenses being reported and then the reported offenses be considered as whining?

Good questions, Jeff. :)

Rich, I think we all understood why you asked the questions you did but neither choice is a viable option; we all agree that "no rules" is very bad and "strictly enforcing the rules" doesn't solve the issues at hand either.

Most seem to agree that the biggest problems are from the incosistency in how the rules are applied. (And, if you recall, I did post previously where I said a couple times that moderating a forum is very hard because almost nothing is black and white. Believe me, I do understand this concept.)

Now, the only way I can see to remedy this is to spend more time or assign more eyes to the job. I know it's hard to catch everything and I've sent in a couple complaints myself just to be helpful but I'm not here to babysit and I don't read everything thread.

Oh yes, I do think that we all agree that policing this site is a 24/7 job But if everyone would take the time to hit that little link "report post " it would make it easier on the 3 brave souls that have taken on the job. The trouble is that not every reported post is black and white, yes calling a person a scumbag is a no brainer but there are those that are great at keeping it in a gray area. That is where the problems lays, take away the gray area. If you enforce a certain rule against Joe then you have to enforce it the same against Bob and vice versa, now if the infraction is a judgement call then instead of a warning point give them a public (posted) warning. The other thing that I have seen ALOT of is baiting a reaction or that the only meaning for the post is to harass a person. But with all that said once people start to report these post that is the time for the mods. to do thier jobs, we as members will help but we need your help to. Once people learn that the rules WILL be enforced and that the GRAY AREA is gone things will work themselves out nicely.

ok its about the rules

your first post read
"This is getting old people not reading the rules"
then whining

yes it is

and your last points explained it to me thanks.
my idea would case more problems.
so how about some way to make everyone memorize
the rules I admit I posted before reading first time
and since I have read them it would help immensely if everyone was fully versed on the rules they are right there for everyone to see .

And the poll states everyone wants the rules to stay and be inforced.

That seems like a answer to your question.
enough from me

be back tonight later good luck

No Rich, I don't get it..........

Originally posted by WebSlave Does anyone understand yet why I posted that poll? [/B]
It's pretty apparent that I don't get it. I voted, commented on why I thought the BOI needs to have strict rule enforcement and offered to help by volunteering my time.....

I have used the "report this post to moderator" button a couple of times. Normally, I don't find the messages here to be "offensive" enough to be troubling, but there have been one or two. The reason I suggested having volunteers *assigned* to a specific forum was to make the policing effort somewhat organised.... we have to police our own in order to help with the site.

I do not feel slighted. I am confused. You seem to have asked for us to "decide" which way the site will go from here... strictly enforced set of rules or anything goes.... the majority have voted for a strict enforcement of the rules. Since you do not appear to want, or you are unwilling to accept help with the site, then I say "case closed." The people have voted, and it is an unwaivering vote for strict enforcement of the rules. There seems to be no discussion necessary, based on the set of parameters you've laid out, so why even allow comments in the poll frmo the start?

I think you're a bright man who cares about the community. But after having read 12+ pages of this thread including several comments of my own, I have to tell you that I'm left with... "what's the point?" You seem to have your mind made up already... so why did you ask us?

I know EXACTLY how hard it is to decide which messages stay and which ones go. I know EXACTLY how hard it is to have to decide on whether you should ban someone or not. I also know that I am NOT interested in moderating any internet chats, mailing lists, message boards or any other resource where I have to be the cop. Been there, did that, have all the scars to prove it. I was approached by another well known web site to moderate a forum not too long ago. I declined. I was offered the "position" anonymously.... I could have two user names... moderate with impunity under one of them and post my usual comments under the other.... I declined. Why? because I know what a pain in the neck it is..... the threats, whining, infantile rantings of people who probably should never be allowed anywhere near a computer with internet access because they have NO SELF CONTROL. They get drunk and they post something stupid. They get high and they post something stupid. They get mad, and they post something stupid.... and the next day, they apologise, and we're supposed to say that everything's all right. That's why I get a little put-out, if you will, when you seemed to have been opening this thread up for discussion, and then you dismiss everything we put on the table as if it has no value, and as if there's only one person in the world (you) that knows what it is like to "deal" with internet babies.

I give you a lot of credit. You've put up with more nonsense than I ever would have. I'd have locked down a lot more of the threads a lot earlier on, and I would have booted more people off the site for less than you've tolerated. That means I have some more growing up to do too. One thing I have learned here, is that the words we put up on the internet for everyone else to see aren't as fleeting as we'd like... this place is as close to permanent as it gets...

This is the last comment I'll post here (this thread). I'm not mad. I just don't see much point in beating the poor dead horse anymore. If you respond with anything I believe is directed at me and that begs for a response, I'll email you.

Keep fighting the good fight. You've got good men standing with you (I miss Richie Luna), and the cause is just. Accepting help isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength.

Once again, I urge you not to put in any more moderators. Some would inevitably be clique members who would permanently ruin your site.

I might, I might not. I cast a vote for option 2, strict enforcement. Don't let the whiners bother you if you go that route, because the vast majority of the people who visit here appreciate the effort that you put into the site, and the FREE service you provide the community.

MODERATORS

As far as moderators go, maybe you could entertain the thought of adding one or two on a trail basis only. If it proved a failure, dump the idea all together...but if it worked, then further consideration to this issue could then be given. Rather then just dismissing the whole idea before even trying it.

The Three Stooges

You guys do a great job , but when you do need help, remember there was Shemp when Curly wasn't around....;}
So who is Moe, Larry and Curly amongst ya????
keep up the good work

Scott, you seem to feel that I have not given this serious consideration. Sorry you feel that way, but I most certainly have, which is why I am taking the stand that I am. Please don't assume I am just dismissing the idea frivolously.

Right now, ALL of the moderators would all be piled up right here in the BOI. Granted this forum gets the most traffic by far, but I don't want moderators tripping over each other. Heck, I assigned someone warning points myself not realizing that one of the mods had already done so for the same message. Of course that generated a complaint (rightfully so), so I could expect that to become a common occurrence here.

Now if and when the other discussion forums get more traffic, why yes, then I will certainly see the need for more moderators as there will be much more territory to cover. But a half dozen moderators just to cover the BOI? No, I don't think so.

Matter of fact, a few weeks ago I requested help with forum sponsors (who would act like moderators within those forums), and to date, not one soul has responded to my request.

Forum sponsors needed

If anyone feels that the way this site is run is just way too unbearable to tolerate, well, the solution is real simple, folks. There are plenty of other sites out there that would love to have your company. People are signing up on THIS site daily because they apparently like what they see here, so I guess I'm not doing too badly administering this site.

Just so there is no confusion about what has happened here, I have split off the discussion that ReticEd had started in relation to Dr. Jay Owens into its own thread. I don't think anyone will have any trouble finding it.

I just looked at your thread, Rich. It looks like you got 3 volunteers (2 for leos and one for various pythons and/or boids). I have a feeling that because you didn't publicly respond to their offer in the thread, no one else bothered to speak after that. I know Kelli is a regular leopard gecko forum poster at Kingsnake...very helpful and knowlegable too. Maybe your three volunteers are waiting for something from you...? Maybe something like, "Kelli, that's great! Thanks for your offer. If you make a few posts in that room and send me an email, we can discuss this further. I really appreciate your help." Just a suggestion. ;)

Oops! I'm sorry. I just read the timestamps and read the posts out of order. As of the time of your post, there hadn't been any vounteers. Just pretend I didn't post that last message, ok? LOL!! (<sigh> Now I feel stupid.)

Doh!!!

(Just messing with you Sybella. ;))

This thread keeps popping up as unread and going to the top of the heap, but no new messages have been added. Am I going crazy? (hoping my message here will make it stop acting bizarre)

No, Sasheena, you're mind is as fully intact as it was before. ;) Anytime a change is made to a thread, it gets remarked as "new." In this case, people are voting on the poll.

Oooh, Jay! Just wait...yours is coming! LOL!! ;)

As a favor to Rich and Jay (and consequence of this thread), I've decided to donate a small amount of my time...my eyes. I am now utilizing the "report this post to moderator" feature, but only when I see something that is offensively out of bounds.

I am not and will not be actively looking for violations but if I stumble across something "ugly" while I'm here, I will report it. I am an admin of 2 forums and a moderator of another, very active one. In general, I am very easy going and like to let things slide but I do draw the line when someone posts something I wouldn't want our children to see. This is a public forum viewable by all-ages. In other words, I am not a rule-nazi but I will report things that are distasteful, attacking, foul, etc.

I dislike being a tattle-tale but clearly, and by their request, the mods need a little help here. In all fairness, I just wanted to let everyone know. :)

I hadn't thought about the poll aspect of this thread... now it's all clear, thanks for making me see the "light"

Oh, and I too, will report posts I feel are far outside the boundaries.

You're very welcome, Sasheena. It used to drive me nuts too until I figured it out...and it took me a while. LOL!!

(The forums I own and moderate are ezboard forums. And, with ezboard every time they update their system, something else ends up wrong with it. I thought the "marked as new when there weren't new posts" thing was yet another bug for a time.)
