    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

how long shoulkd i just plain leave em alone after shipping? can i handle em everyday or once a week? i don't wanna stress em out, but i'm like a kid in a candy store lol.
 
Since when a new snake comes in (depending on what the snake looks like (odd behavior, mites, etc) it is whisked into quarantine (a separate room) two floors away from my collection, and I shower and I don't touch the quarantine rack again except to feed, clean tub, water the snake then I don't suggest touching, picking them up at all.

Part of the reason for this is it's a pain to have to shower, change clothes, etc everytime I touch the snake just in case I do have to go do some work on my collection.


But since you got them together and don't plan to quarantine them apart? I gues you can do as you please when you please.
 
I didn't realize that these 2 WERE your collection, either! lol But even so, I would handle them as little as possible for at least a week so that they can acclimate properly. Shipping is very stressful to most snakes.

And yes, even though I have a COUPLE more than you and I DO have to go through the hassles that Deborah listed, it's still hard to let them sit that long!! If that "kid in a candy store" feeling goes away, you're not going to enjoy your snakes much more.

That week will pass in ....no more than a year, it feels like, but then you'll have years and years of enjoyment from them! :)

now like next week if the cold front rolls through like we're hoping, i'll have another two snakes shipped to me. so your thoughts are to se them up in a different room? i spose i could put em in the basement bathroom (down the hall form these guys in my office). what nasties are ya'll talking about besides mites that can jump from one enclosure to another? I defer to ya'lls experience because mine is very limited lol, so the more detail, and frankly, patronism the better. Thanks guys...and gals!!
 
Only two of those tubs have snakes in em, i just have em all ready...or did have until the suggestion of quarantine came up. i do have lids for all the tubs, so i spose i could order some more heat tape and another thermostat to set up a temp staging area in the bathroom. Like when ya'll get several snakes in at a time, do you keep em each in seperate rooms? this is ignorance talking folks not stupidity or doubt lol.

:rofl:...nowhere near THAT many more!! And I've gotta say that you're starting off with a much nicer set-up than my original!! Oh yeah...those were the days! Snakes escaping every few days....oh yeah!! :rolleyes:

Not to mention the morph FEMALES that you're starting out with. If I had it to do all over again, I would've invested in more female morphs early on, too!!

Thats funny stuff, i don't care who you are lol:D. I 've been mulling it over with my wife for awhile, and here's the crazy part..she hates snakes. that was one of the rules when i started collecting beardies...no friggin snakes. After our first reptile show, she was intrigued. repulsed, but intrigued...and our kids' reaction...:yesnod:thats my boys!(and lil girl lol) Anyways, once she started to see the implications and the beauty, as i was laying out a plan of "well i'd like to get visuals, but hets only cost..." she jumped in with "its gonna cost the same to wait two years and breed the maybe ones as it is to wait and breed for sure ones right?" i replied after the initial investment ...yup, same exact thing. So she's like..."so why not spend a little more now and save years of headache"... lol winner winner, chicken dinner...daddys gettin some bad ass snakes!!!!!!!
And since this is the busiest time of year for my flooring company...we won't really feel the upfront investment. i just moonlighted a few floors beyond what i already had scheduled. That way i'm not paying my guys, or cutting into the "companies" profit.
And the best part is since its a business venture, guess who gets to write all this off?:dancer01:
We'll see though, like i said, anything beyond paying for the hobby will be a blessing, and i'm not really holding my breath.

That's the way to go. Since you are going for the long haul, if I were you I would start right from the beginning. Set up a separate rack, in a separate room, separate bowls, heat, etc. No shared utensiles, no shared airspace.

There are some very good threads about quarantining on here.

Nasties that can spread:

(these are the two I fear most)

IBD (inclusion body disease) there's another disease out there that is almost as dangerous
Mites


Others can add more....
 
Basic quarantine is 3 months, but if you want to really be sure, a full year. This is because some of the worst nasties can actually incubate for 10 months or more! This can make building a new collection difficult, but always remember what's at stake.
 
Yea i did some digging. I get it now. Definitely gonna set up a quarantine rack. Thanks for the insistent warnings everyone.
